Suffered badly with dementia for many years - I've had a dear friend pass away today after suffering similarly.

Really sad news. I had the pleasure of seeing him play on a regular basis for the great United side of the sixties. Nobby had a reputation as a Hard man. That may be true, he was the grit that held United and England together, but he could play as well. RIP Nobby.

Undoubtedly talented and fit well into some very good teams including of course the World Cup winning England side. I always thought he was a bit of a clogger and not a patch on our Brian O’Neil. RIP

Willie Morgan's tribute on NW News more or less said the same, "The man was an animal on the pitch but..." Probably didn't come out as he intended, he was just trying to show the two sides of the man, friendly and happy go lucky off the pitch, but ruthless on it.

A sad loss. My uncle, a renowned priest in Manchester who I respected so much for his generosity and his humanity had two friends. So I am told they were a Dr O'Reilly and Nobby's father an undertaker. I like to think they had cornered the final pathway for Catholic Manchester.

Nobby Stiles plays a part in one of the best football stories I've heard, told by Bertie Auld, one of Celtic's " Lisbon Lions ". I think I've posted it before, possibly on " the other place ", but it bears repetition ....

When Celtic played Inter Milan in the 1967 European Cup Final, they lined up in the tunnel, " We looked across at Inter, beautiful silky shirts, all of the players tall, deeply tanned, jet black hair with film star smiles ... we were deathly pale after a Scottish season, with scabs and bruises visable, a motley collection of the tall and gangly, stocky, and a ginger " short arse " called Jimmy Johnstone !!

Inter took an early lead through a Mazzola penalty, but Celtic scored two second half goals to win 2-1. Auld takes up the story, " At the final whistle, it was noticed by the Press that several of us ran towards Ronnie Simpson, in the Celtic goal and gathered around him. Apart from the penalty, he'd had little to do, so a Reporter asked why we'd run over to Ronnie. " Billy McNeil looked at the Pressman, " Do you remember that picture of Nobby Stiles dancing round Wembley with the World Cup ? " , the Reporters nodded, " Well, our wives told us in no uncertain terms that if we won, they didn't want to see us in the papers wi' nae teeth in ! ". Ronnie Simpson had spent the whole of the second half with a cloth bag in the back of the goal containing five sets of dentures !!

Said to be 3.5 times more common in ex professional footballers and four of the seven WC team have gone suffering with it, Stiles aged 78, Charlton, 85, Peters, 76, Wilson 83, whilst Ball was only 61 and had heart attack Moore from cancer 51, Banks 81, cancer. Hunt 82 Hurst is 88 I think, Cohen 81 and Sir Robert 83 and no idea about their health. Pretty grim stats.

I don't think the stats are any different to anywhere else, I just think they get highlighted when they are footballers.

I also think Geoff Hurst might not be too happy if he sees this post - he's 78

We conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare mortality from neurodegenerative disease among 7676 former professional soccer players (identified from databases of Scottish players) with that among 23,028 controls from the general population who were matched to the players on the basis of sex, age, and degree of social deprivation. Causes of death were determined from death certificates. Data on medications dispensed for the treatment of dementia in the two cohorts were also compared. Prescription information was obtained from the national Prescribing Information System.

RESULTS
Over a median of 18 years, 1180 former soccer players (15.4%) and 3807 controls (16.5%) died. All-cause mortality was lower among former players than among controls up to the age of 70 years and was higher thereafter. Mortality from ischemic heart disease was lower among former players than among controls (hazard ratio, 0.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.66 to 0.97; P=0.02), as was mortality from lung cancer (hazard ratio, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.40 to 0.70; P<0.001). Mortality with neurodegenerative disease listed as the primary cause was 1.7% among former soccer players and 0.5% among controls (subhazard ratio [the hazard ratio adjusted for competing risks of death from ischemic heart disease and death from any cancer], 3.45; 95% CI, 2.11 to 5.62; P<0.001). Among former players, mortality with neurodegenerative disease listed as the primary or a contributory cause on the death certificate varied according to disease subtype and was highest among those with Alzheimer’s disease (hazard ratio [former players vs. controls], 5.07; 95% CI, 2.92 to 8.82; P<0.001) and lowest among those with Parkinson’s disease (hazard ratio, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.17 to 3.96; P=0.01). Dementia-related medications were prescribed more frequently to former players than to controls (odds ratio, 4.90; 95% CI, 3.81 to 6.31; P<0.001). Mortality with neurodegenerative disease listed as the primary or a contributory cause did not differ significantly between goalkeepers and outfield players (hazard ratio, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.43 to 1.24; P=0.24), but dementia-related medications were prescribed less frequently to goalkeepers (odds ratio, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.19 to 0.89; P=0.02).

CONCLUSIONS
In this retrospective epidemiologic analysis, mortality from neurodegenerative disease was higher and mortality from other common diseases lower among former Scottish professional soccer players than among matched controls. Dementia-related medications were prescribed more frequently to former players than to controls. These observations need to be confirmed in prospective matched-cohort studies. Of course as we all die, if you have less chance of dying from vascular disease and lung cancer, something else has to get you.

Marvellous man who always did the job he was picked to do, rest in peace Nobby.

An absolute hero for us when playing for England but, to be honest, a horrible, obnoxious little git when playing for United against us. The only man who could sort him out was Brian O'Neil, who was kept out of the England team by Stiles.

Not only could Brian O'neil sort Nobby Stiles out,I remember Gordon Harris exchanging a few blows on him.That was in the days
when a confrontation on the pitch didn't always mean a sending off.Harris was a fearsome man to cross on the pitch and a great player.

Very sad.
Annoying to hear stars past and present sing their glowing Praise of him and his achievements, in both his professional life and his battles in later life with debilitating illness . Many described his life descending into abject poverty and him being forced to sell the medals etc he won as a pro footballer.
Pity those who could of helped didn’t though and sat back and watched such an influential fellow ex pro, sell his possessions to be able to keep food on the table a roof over his head and care in his time of need.
This fondly remembered man was so easily forgot when he needed the help of these people most. Those who had the financial ability to help.
