Just seen that Jimmy Anderson’s to have a street named after him in Burnley.
Nice to see.

I think the mayor has got it wrong in suggesting a street close to where he was born. It should, in my view, be central. I don’t know who suggested it on here but I do agree with renaming Manchester Road from the bottom up to around the Town Hall.

James Anderson way is the way to go. And central as CT says, complete with a statue at the bottom.

Why can’t everyone “get” what an absolute WORLD CLASS sportsman he is, and recognise the fact with something worthy?

Did think of “James Anderson Approach” to keep it cricket related but not sure if sounds right for a road

On getting off the bus years ago.... the conductor would shout " station Aproach" at the bus stop at Bank hall colne rd. So maybe is feasible.

Whichever street they pick, they need to make sure it swings one or t’other.

I like the idea of naming the lower end of Manchester Road James Anderson Way.
Maybe even part of Belvedere Road from the Wellington towards the cricket club.

I'd rename Manchester Road from the Roundabout down, really.

Wouldn't really be averse to renaming Centenary way either as another option. The lack of businesses on there would certainly reduce the necessary admin

May be the short section of Ormerod road next to Queen's Park, outside his old school. Less admin as only the school on that section.

Any news of the proposed statue?

That could have some bearing on which road it could be

There is also an issue, as has been suggested on this thread, of getting agreement from all residents on any particular stretch of road. Renaming the bottom section of Brunshaw Road as Harry Potts Way was easy in that respect with only the football club and the bookmakers to consider.

I understand the mention of Belvedere Road given that he played cricket for Burnley CC, but his achievements are not with Burnley CC, they are with England and I've always felt that it is the town honouring him and any such recognition should be central. Centenary Way was mentioned, that's a good idea, but I did particularly like the Manchester Road idea, although there are a lot of businesses on there who would need to approve. I think bottom to the Town Hall, or the roundabout, would be perfect with a statue placed in the pedestrian area at the bottom. I've always thought statues should be in the most prominent position so that it gives more people the opportunity to see them.

Could they rename the bus station after him and put a statue of him next to the big clock?

Cant argue with that.

My idea would be: Some metal footsteps in the ground running up to a statue of James Anderson in his bowling action, and a wicket replacing one of the central bollards.

Job done.

don't know when or why but here is a map from 1827.

https://ibb.co/4TknNMq

edit: actually looking at that map i see the part west of the culvert was already called yorkshire street so there is at least part of the reason as to why.

The name change may have been something to do with the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Liverpool was in Lancashire + Leeds is in Yorkshire = changing the name to Yorkshire Street. The Leeds and Liverpool canal was one of the main transport arteries in the country and most of its wealth past along it.

Maybe it goes back to the cotton industry around the late 1700s with transport between Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

I mentioned Yorkshire street a while back on the original thread when it was initially suggested with a statue of Jimmy at the bottom of Centenary Way bowling down towards TM

I understand the mention of Belvedere Road given that he played cricket for Burnley CC, but his achievements are not with Burnley CC, they are with England

So maybe they should rename the A1 in his name as he is the A1, second to none, fast bowler or maybe we should wait until the road in Burnley could become Sir James Anderson Way

Let's name the road from Rossendale Rd Junction with Accrington Rd to the roundabout of the M65. The bit of road which is taking 18 months to widen. Let's call it the ANDERSON EXPRESS WAY!!! With a statue on the round about. Welcoming people to our wonderful town and speeding our loved ones to the crematorium!!!!
