I wish we would have spent the money we did on Defour on buying some unbelievable young players for hardly any money who turned into world beaters who we then sold for £100m each
I also wish that the trees in my back garden were all made of chocolate and fairy dust
My final wish is that I could have another 3 wishes

Back in the real world I loved watching Defour - he was absolute quality. The goal against United and being there in the away end was one of my favourite moments in 40 plus years of going to games....and one of the finest goals I have ever seen into a keeper many people regarded at the time as the best in the world.

Defour was a fantastic signing for Burnley. Although we have regressed since, it was a real marquee signing and a signal of intent.

A lot of people thinking Defour was a bad signing because of his injuries, need to realise that we only managed to get him because of those injuries.

Exactly! no Defour, and I highly doubt the trips to Aberdeen, Istanbul & Athens would have been possible.

Not to mention the goals against Hull and Bristol City on the Turf. Was a pleasure watching him play.

Defour was singularly the most talented footballer I have seen at BFC ...

£8million plus wages over 3 years for 50 odd games? Good signing ?

Suppose when you look at the likes of dyches other signings it is pretty good to be honest. You're right on this occasion

Yep he got us to Europe and our highest ever finish - so more than paid for itself.
We bought him knowing he would be injured at various points - without his injury record he would never have come to Burnley in a million years and like other international players who are getting picked for the no 1 rated team in the world his price would have been nearer to £50m without his injuries.

As for Dyche’s other signings stop embarrassing yourself you idiot. Do we really need to list them for you to show you how stupid you are ?
Or shall we also list the players he developed into much better players than they were under the previous manager ?

Seriously go support the club where you live if you are not happy with what Dyche has done in the last 8 years. It will save you some bus fare money shuffling down to Deadwood

No, but if the takeover doesn’t go ahead I feel he will leave the club and it may not be his choice.
I think he has only started to keep his gob shut because of the (potential) takeover.

Ok d-ickhead who was better than Defour that season ?
He played more games than Wood, Barnes or Vokes.
He also brought the best out of Jack Cork and it’s no co-incidence that Cork had his best games for us when it was him and Defour in the middle.
Why do you think he was picked to start for Belgium that season ?

Maybe you don’t remember that far back or mummy and daddy wouldn’t let you go on yet.

Not arguing against Defour being a brilliant player but Barnes and Vokes played more games than him (as did JBG, Cork & Hendrick) and Wood played the same amount of games

In fact out of our main 5 midfielders that season and our 3 main strikers he only played more games than Brady (Voles only started 7 out of his 30 so id give Defour the nod in the games played h2h for those two)

Tarks , Mee, Ward and Cork had better season. Lowton even had a few assists that season! How many goals/assists did SD get that season??

It may have been mentioned as I haven't read every post on this subject but it seems to have been ignored that Burnley are not the only team to be having a difficult start to the season. Sheffield Utd ( and their manager !) were heralded as being world beaters last season but are struggling this one , so far. Same for Fulham , West Brom, Brighton ( change of manager there too,) who are not doing much better than us.
Keep the faith. In my humble opinion we just seem short on pace from midfield and therefore really have no option than 'hoof ball' to try and get the play in the opponent's half!
Also too many myths on here. Burnley are not an 'ageing team' as though they get out of breath chasing a ball! SD has been backed in the transfer market, some good but some wasted millions too. Our most expensive player ( Gibson,) has hardly kicked a ball in anger and is now on loan at a Club where we will no doubt still be paying a big chunk of his wages. I can understand the Chairman's reluctance to fork out more.

In the league - which is relevant as we were discussing getting to Europe
Defour started 24 games
Wood started 20 games
Barnes 21
Vokes 7
Brady 15

I appreciate that there were additional appearances from the others from the bench - I didn’t spot that - apologies. Point really is more about how integral to our success that season Defour was and how good a player he was. I’m not really sure how anyone could argue that a player who was getting picked in the midfield of the no1 ranked team in the world was anything other than our best player (and I know that you are not arguing that btw)

Pretty sure it's no coincidence that the likes of Cork, Brady and probably JBG played their best football in a Burnley shirt whilst Defour was alongside them in midfield.

The way some people go on is that he single handedly got us in europe he certainly helped there's no denying that, I find it quite disrespectful to his teammates not acknowledging there contributions.

The season Defour was at his best and fittest it was no coincidence we played some of our best football in the Premier League under Dyche and got into Europe.
Of course there were some fantastic contributions from other players too....like there is in all Dyche teams it’s the sum of the parts.

Defour was something different though for us in terms of the way he found space, the way he could dictate the pace of a game and his quality of passing.

It’s not often we have seen that quality of player in a claret shirt in the last 40 or so years and from what I saw he made the players around him play better. Cork had his best spell in a burnley shirt for example.

All that said I don’t think it was the right decision to give him an extra year as by that point his injuries had caught up on him and it looked like his career was finished - at least in a league as tough as ours.

Don't think he played from January onwards. Our form did dip the second half of the season but we won 4 or 5 games on the spin around March/April time which did enough to ensure 7th spot. Plus nobody below us was good enough to put any kind of a run together.

Reasons why Dyche should be retained.

1) A track record of success over 8 years
2) Turned players such as Heaton, Keane, Pope and others into England internationals.
3) If we do go down, he's the obvious choice to bring us back up, he's down it before, and I see no reason why he couldn't do it again.
4) Overseen a rebuild of our youth system, and also the training ground at Barnfield.

Reasons why Dyche should be told thanks for everything, but it's time to move on.

1) His comments about the board, and his constant public airing of his grievances.
2) His stubbornness to change when his tactics aren't working.
3) Poor recruitment in the last few windows, even when he had money to spend, Gibson is a prime example of this.

That's just off the top of my head, but it gives a flavour of the positives and negatives of his long reign, on balance I'd stick with him even if we go down, he's got a year remaining on his contract, and as I pointed out he's already shown he's more than capable of achieving in the Championship.

It's a stick for me also based on the fact he's done it before but mainly due to us getting the cheque book out to sign andre gray and joey Barton we went straight back up as we looked poor before joey came

Yes the phrase better the devil you know comes to mind, we did splash the cash on Andre, but we doubled our money on him when he went to Watford, so it was worth the gamble, and of course his goals proved the difference, along with Joey's midfield drive in securing the title.

My main concern with getting rid of Dyche is who will we replace him with?

I expect we'll either go down the Brian Laws route and appoint someone with Burnley connections (so the likes of Graham Alexander, Paul Cook) or we'll go down the Brian Laws route and appoint someone who has failed in the Championship but hey, they're available and cheap (such as Garry Monk, Lee Johnson etc).

Neither of which fills me with any optimism.

It's backs against the wall time at the moment. The impression I've got from watching the games this season is that the players are mentally and physically exhausted. We have succeeded against the odds in recent seasons through absolute commitment to winning matches, and retaining that level is mentally exhausting. The short break before the start of the season and the apparent disagreements within the management of the club have made that spirit difficult to find. At some point we have to try to get it back, and that will have to come primarily from the management of the first team. I think Sean is exhausted and a bit dispirited, and it is so hard to get yourself out of that rut. He has shown in the past, however, that he is mentally tough and there must be a chance that he can turn it round, as he has done in the past when times were hard.
