Set Pieces
Set Pieces
Seems our only way of scoring this season but even these are poor, other teams vary set pieces and try different things.
We do one thing in swinger to the far post.
We have to be more creative
We have to attack more
We have to play our best footballers

Re: Set Pieces
We scored from a corner at Leicester when Jimmy headed home, but yes our set pieces need to greatly improve, last night when we delivered semi decent dead balls into the box, our big men carried a threat, notably Ben Mee, but we didn't do this anywhere near enough, this is definitely something we can work on over the international break.

Re: Set Pieces
Our corners were superb last season, nothing wrong with swinging it in right underneath the bar.
The problem this season has been personnel for it, and obviously delivery of it by Westwood.
Last night he swung one beauty right underneath the crossbar which had their goalie flapping. There's no Cork or Hendrick there any more, only the usual Tarky, Mee (was Long), Wood and Barnes (was Rodders). The rest aren't going to be getting in there to get a head on it or influence the goalie.
So maybe a new routine is needed after all.

Re: Set Pieces
burnley regard throw ins like a means to get the game going again, never, ever see it as a means to take control. if its chucked at an opponent , all well and good, we are up and running .

Yes we've been crap at throw ins for a very long time.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 12:58 amburnley regard throw ins like a means to get the game going again, never, ever see it as a means to take control. if its chucked at an opponent , all well and good, we are up and running .
Lack of movement and options there.

Re: Set Pieces
We've been mainly rubbish at corners, certainly, for a long time.
They often don't clear the first defender.

Re: Set Pieces
Without looking at the stats I’d hazard a guess that we were one of the most effective teams in the PL at attacking corners last season. This season, not so, but to say we’ve been rubbish at corners for a long time is just not true.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 1:12 amWe've been mainly rubbish at corners, certainly, for a long time.

Re: Set Pieces
One thing that's generally been a lot worse this season has been set pieces. We play for them but haven't managed to benefit from them. Dunnes goal aside.
Re: Set Pieces
Didn’t Westwood’s goal at Newcastle come, somewhat indirectly, from a corner? And Tarks had one headed off the line v Spurs, also from a corner?

When we get a free kick on the edge of the box I generally head for the kitchen to make a brew.

Re: Set Pieces
Our shooting from the edge of the box when we get a direct free kick is poor and has been since De Four's pearler at Old Trafford. How many years ago was that
It used to be one of Brady's traits, but he seems to have gone down the pecking order, and only plays occasionally, though I see that Ireland still regard him as a dead ball specialist
In some ways its a pity we could not have got Wilson on loan-his free kicks are special

Re: Set Pieces
For a couple of seasons the routine was a corner beyond the back post for Ben Mee, on the bye line, to head back into the mixer.
It worked quite a few times.

Re: Set Pieces
We also for the most part have stopped marking the keeper. I wonder if that is just because recently if you touch a keeper he gets a free kick?
Used to work very well when Stephen Ward used to do it.

Yes, always down the line, always forwards, percentages. Never expect a quick one - it's not gonna happen.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Sun Nov 08, 2020 12:58 amburnley regard throw ins like a means to get the game going again, never, ever see it as a means to take control. if its chucked at an opponent , all well and good, we are up and running .
