“Half of all illegal streamers are hacked”

Post by huw.Y.WattfromWare » Sun Nov 08, 2020 5:07 pm

The above was scrolling across the electronic screen at City.
I haven’t been and I wondered if any on here had?
Or is it just hogwash to frighten a few from partaking?

It would be just as accurate to claim that half of the world's internet users are hacked at some point.

In answer to the question, I've not been hacked no, and I reckon I'm just as likely to be hacked from using this site as I am using hesgoal etc.

It depends on what the definition of 'hacked' is.
Ads injecting questionable metadata scraping or similar, quite possibly. Hacked is a very vague terms people misuse all the time.

Whenever people say 'My Facebook was hacked', 99% of the time they mean they were Phished.

Nope, never.

There's no money in it because you don't put your personal details in, shopping websites are more likely to be targeted.

The current scam phone calls I get are people claiming they're from BT and trying to tell me I've been hacked

They can't tell me my address, or which site I caught the virus from.

They usually hang up when I tell them how many adult film sites I use

I find it odd when companies ring, unsolicited, and ask to confirm details.
They are ones calling and should be the ones confirming the details.

One of the banks I use used to ring and then ask me to confirm my security details. It took them some time before they understood I was the one that wanted to know that they were who they claimed they were. We resolved by me agreeing to call their published number - which I did only after I knew my phone line was clear from the earlier call.

A lot of the unsolicited calls ae because contact details have been hacked from hotels and airline systems. :(

Yep, I used my work laptop to follow a football stream one time. My employer used to say how good their data security was and how much malware protection they had in place. So, my laptop got infected - it took my IT help desk colleagues the best part of 2 days to clean it all up. Oops :(

PS: Now retired, so no longer have a laptop from work. :D

When we make an outbound call to a customer we always have to ask them the billing address and security data in order to verify we are talking to the right person

I get that but how do we know you are who you say you are?

Anybody could call and ask that question without knowing the correct answer

Also, we ONLY outbound call a customer if we have had previous contact with them regarding an issue on their account and at a pre-agreed timeframe....I guess that narrows it dow a bit....for us anyway!

I think they're referring to those sites you sign up and pay for IPTV etc - not streaming like on a website.

When people call claiming to be "my internet provider", I ask who would that be then? And funnily enough they don't seem to know and hang up!

I get a few of those kind of calls. I am ex-directory, in the TPS and use BT Call protect but a few still get through. It takes about five seconds to recognise one and put the phone down.

You should never give any personal details to an organisation that contacts you. If it's a legitimate one, even if I know that it is legit I will not give them any details. I remind them that they shouldn't be contacting people in that way and that I will ring their office about whatever they want to discuss.

The Chemist rang me last week about my Mothers prescription. They were introducing a delivery charge and wanted my credit card details. I nicely told them off and then rang back. I wouldn't be surprised if they were in breach of something or other. They certainly were not exercising good practice in the areas of security and data protection.

Giving your card details to one of those sounds very risky.

It seems Vola has been shut down. That may affect a few.

The sign will have to change to read,
“Half of all illegal streamers are hacked off”

It was an Indian call centre and I was in between jobs at work so played with them, kept me amused for 5mins

Tricky one with banks as I used to work in a bank, you get trained that you need to confirm you’re speaking to the right person.

I’d usually say “if I said your birthday was the x day, could you confirm the month” .... if I give the 3rd letter of your mother’s maiden name, could you give the 5th” or something along those lines so that both ends could be verified.

I can’t work out how two of the biggest ISPs in the country - Sky and BT - can’t just block these sites if they care so much about it?

Seems they’ve given up trying to stop them now by scaring folk from using them?

Must say I worry a bit when clicking links to try and find a stream though.

Its not about what details you put in when streaming, its how they can use their software to infect your system or extract info from it.

Theres nothing easier for a hacker to do than target the general public. Amazes me how much stuff people share on whatsapp (files and links).

I use a VPN for secure browsing and to rehearse my 'Al Murray Pub Landlord' style parody routine under the pseudonym Ringo McCartney.

Last and only time I think I had a virus was using Limewire many moons ago.
I've never had my bank accounts hacked into, or maybe I have and they realised there wasn't anything worth having

Perhaps it is time for a rethink. A bit like music downloads, revolutionised the music business.

Perhaps, Sky/BT etc should embrace the use of streaming 'customers'.

They could add millions to their advertising 'views', when they sell ads to companies. Like newspaper readership is based on 1 sale = 1+ several readers.

Entirely agree. There’s a way in there to make the PL much more accessible and profitable.

Maybe the scrolling message was incomplete and should have read..

"Half of all illegal streamers are hacked off at having to pay £14.95 to watch their team on Sky or BT"
