Re: Pope starts
Only game in doubt is England v Iceland next week, Iceland play away in Denmark this weekend and with the travel ban from Denmark to the UK it means Iceland players who play in the game in Denmark won't be able to travel to the UK for the game with us. Seen plans online for Albania or Germany to host the game instead but if this is not possible England will forfeit the game presumably resulting in a 3-0 win for Iceland.

I think it tells you that GS doesn’t have 100% faith in Pickford.

As pleased as I am that he’s starting, we all know that it’s only because it’s a friendly game.
If it was a competitive game it would be Pickford

I'm happy he's starting because if he has a really good game I think it will put the manger in a difficult position, especially as Pickford is under pressure after being dropped by Everton.
So proud when a Burnley player plays for England. Being able to watch it on TV is just fantastic

Re: Pope starts
Denmark are playing Sweden currently and there are no British based players in either squad this evening, it would appear players based here are avoiding the Denmark games.

Sensible move by Southgate to gave Pope some game time in friendly's just in case Pickford picks up an injury ahead of the Euros

Southgate and Pope just been on a live video broadcast on Facebook. He spoke quite highly of our Nick but I suppose he had to with him being there.

Re: Pope starts
I really cant see Pope having too much to do really as Ireland have lost our best two strikers yesterday and we don't have much cover in that department .
Trust me when i say this is going to be a poor Ireland side tomorrow just hope we can defend .

I'm not sure you're supposed to refer to the Scots as jocks it's not seen as PC these days, however they aren't on channel 5 they are on pick, I do agree both the NI and Scotland games have a purpose to them, it does seem bizarre in such a congested calendar England are partaking in a meaningless friendly, great for Nick to get the nod, and this shows he's clearly the next in the pecking order if Pickford isn't available for any reason, and the experience can't do him any harm I guess, even though Wembley will be deserted tomorrow.Wellsy1882 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 11, 2020 9:40 pmId rather watch the jocks on channel 5

As for the Scotland game they seem confident, but knowing Scotland they'll find a way to blow it at the final hurdle.
If NI qualify tomorrow, it's possible that we'll have 2 international goalkeepers involved in next summer's Euro's. Not bad for a provincial club, and further testament to Billy Mercer's coaching skills.

Re: Pope starts
Just read the keeper assessment by Margetson, England keeper coach.
It is on the sky website page about our Nick playing. Link to it there.
It boiled down to:
Pickford - lots of little errors which make his saves have to be better than they need to be - the art of good keeping being to make every safe as simple as possible. Also poor decision making, causing goal errors.
Pope - perfect positioning. Keeps saves simple. Great presence and therefore able, with his other good stance/position attributes, make the impossible a great save.
Henderson - super athlete which covers for his errors. (Like Pickford at his age). Still learning.
So, if your keeper coach makes that assessment....how come the number chooses the lesser keeper???

Ian , very generous of you to devote so much of your time researching English goalkeepers , I had a minute spare yesterday and managed to cover a history of Scottish goalkeepers.
Only joking Ian and I want you to continue taking the lead on our match day threads , even though I know how upset you are at the interference .

Did the research include Adam Blacklaw's appearances for Scotland?

Great feature on Nick Pope by Henry Winter in today's Times
How non-League stints primed Nick Pope for battle
Nick Pope starts for England against Ireland at Wembley tonight but has never forgotten his roots, his time in non-League and the EFL, the chances he was given on loan far from the “glitz and glamour” of the Premier League.
It is why the Burnley goalkeeper, whose brother Josh still plays non-League, is keen to voice his concerns about the straitened times and stricken clubs down the pyramid, and hopes a solution can be found to bail them out.

Very kind comment about match thread. Sadly, that ship has sailed, as the folk running this ship have decided to ban Madge and fun titles, for reasons unknown. They will probably start their own 'official' thread.
Re: Pope starts
Everton's Jordan Pickford failed to get your vote of confidence, being the least selected goalkeeper of the three in the squad. Burnley's Nick Pope was comfortably the most popular, appearing in 45% of teams.kritichris wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 9:25 amPope was also the people's choice.

If anybody really is blindly idiotic enough to realise why Southgate starts Pickford ahead of Pope ,take a close look at Pope performance with his feet in Brighton game . It was donkey -esque and most u15 grass roots keepers would have kicked better . Personally I think he’s great for us and the obsession with keepers feet ridiculous , however it is what it is

Hi Ian, I suppose we both find it less than comfortable accepting how being natural and having fun is being removed by others in this day and age. Never mind you had your time and cheered everyone up on match days. You are doing the best thing in moving on.
Good to hear you have some good genes from both sides. Adam Blacklaw is my all time favourite goalkeeper and what a great character he was, even after his memorable professional playing career there are one or two classic tales from when he played on in local amateur football.
I found it relevant he was mentioned by another poster because if my memory serves me well he too should have had more Scottish caps but was denied them by a so called bigger team’s goalie. Bill Brown , playing for Spurs I think. There may even be one or two clips of Brown letting balls through his legs into the net playing for Scotland but hey let’s not dwell on that too much before the name Ray Clemence comes up

"He’s got a great habit of keeping the ball out the net. That’s a bit old-fashioned in terms of what people want from goalkeepers. They want them to start attacks, juggle, do all sorts of things. But actually there’s something to be said for coming and collecting crosses, dominating your box and keeping the ball out of your net, and he does that.”Paul Waine wrote: ↑Thu Nov 12, 2020 8:35 am

A bit old fashioned! That sums it up! Rather have a keeper who lets more in, because he kicks better! Might as well play a midfielder in goal!
