As a Northern musician who's played on loads of albums for Southern based projects I'm offended by this.

What a load of ********. As it turns out, I live about 10 miles from Glyndebourne and 15 from Falmer where Brighton play. I cant remember ever speaking to anybody that has been to the opera but the place is full of albion season ticket holders
Glyndebourne is not for the locals. Its for posh ***** down from London etc. having a weekend away in the country rather like grouse shooting in Scotland and that bash at Henley.
Musically, it's generally poor fare too. But that's not the point, is it? It's about dressing up, trying to show their mates that they are culturally more advanced than the oiks etc. A bit like eating caviar pretending it has a wonderful flavour, or bleating on about how superb venison is, when actually, horse is tastier, and for us country folk venison is pretty common.
I'm not entirely anti opera. I can appreciate a good bit of Benjamin Britten, but if you want good music, it's not the best place to go. If you want an exciting story, well it's not that either. It's a bastardisation of them both, which means neither reaches its full potential. Still, it's better than musicals or music hall.
