Mesh Wifi Network

Post by Fretters » Sat Nov 14, 2020 10:56 am

For anyone looking to improve their wifi setup, there's £100 of the TP Link Deco M5 mesh system on Amazon. I set mine up yesterday and now get over 100MB* speeds anywhere the house, it's bloody fantastic.

*Obviously you have to have these speeds from your internet provider to start with!

An eye watering amount.

I think it's about £73 with "line rental" from BT.

What should you be getting? Speak to your provider, or if you're techy minded, trying switching wifi channnel. You can use a programme called inSSIDer to see what channels your neighbours are using. They can get clogged up.

Probably nothing. My brothers in the same boat. He's been on to Openreach and his local councillor or whatever about it but Openreach have refused to provide FTTC to his new build estate.

Guess it depends if you need that speed.

I'm paying £25 ish for just under 40 mbps, but it seems to be quick enough for what I do.

Don't REALLY need this kind of speed, to be honest you rarely hit it on a single server. I wanted FTTP once it became available at my house though. The cheapest speed was 300mb for £10 less. Made sense just to pay the extra tenner.

Tis nice watching gigabytes download in about 7-8 seconds though.

We get 17mbps with BT tinterweb ... it gives us reasonable downloads for hd streaming on BT TV etc so works for us....

But as we live in the sticks ... we cannot expect more yet 🙂

Working for Sky we get to see the varying speeds that customers can get....we also have a speed guarantee. In some areas we don't even provide normal ADSL as it is just too slow. I had a customer this week that lived in a fairly rural area, his FTTC speeds were between 4.5 and 6.8Mbps with a guaranteed of 3.6Mbps...and this is fibre....

Tip for anyone wanting to switch provider.

The cash back sites (Quidco/top cashback etc..) always have offers with the big players....

We switched to TalkTalk on an 18 month contract for £23 a month. This was the deal we were going to go for anyway when we shopped around. Did it through TopCashback and got £125 back after 3/4 months.

So for the deal we would have taken anyway we got a decent bit of money back for just going on their site and clicking their link to sign up instead of going direct for the same deal.

(If any of you do shop online a lot then definitely check it out and you’ll save a fortune for stuff you’d buy anyway from the same places you’d buy them. We average about £3/400 a year back for the sake of clicking through the link instead of going through google to find the sites we shop on).

* https://www.topcashback.co.uk/ref/member1181278662844 *

* https://www.quidco.com/raf/4565948/ *

if you do choose to sign up then maybe go through my link and we both get a hit back as a bonus.

These are the current TalkTalk offers on there at the minute but they’re always changing and have Virgin/BT/Sky etc on there too...

I’d recommend signing up anyway if you shop online a bit as there’s cash back for anything from JustEat to Amazon.

Our estate was built in the 80’s, so no cable or Fibre. I get much better speeds on my phone away from the house, but less at home.

You could look into mobile broadband and see if they offer unlimited data/usage.

Then use your phone as a wi-fi hotspot instead of your home connection.

4G/5G is a great alternative if you can't get a decent domestic broadband service. You can buy a 4G+ router for around £110 and install a sim card. EE do an unlimited data package for £35/month, but there are alternatives depending on how much data you use and which provider gives the best signal in your area. If you don't need a land-line phone, you can cancel and recoup some of the cost.

That's right. I said £100 off, it's usually £249.99. Pricey piece of kit but it ensures you get the speeds you're paying for throughout your entire house instead of just near your router. This is vital for me as I now work from home and my 'office' is the furthest possible distance from the router.

My mum has decent interface speed when she’s sat near her ee router but the thick walls of her house makes if difficult to get it in other rooms. Are there any wifi extenders that anyone would recommend??

Thanks Fretters.
Understood.

Considering!

Looks like all tge retailers are doing £149.99. Curry's is bear me.
I get 130-140+ near the router but that sinks to 20 or sometimes less in my bedroom and there is also a black spot.
Only 2.4ghz downstairs.
Would be good to get the most out of my fibre, everywhere!

Yep, that seems to be the price everywhere. Maybe you'd get an even better deal on the actual black Friday.

Just wanted to thank you Fretters for your advice on the TP-Mesh system. Previously I only had a decent WiFi in the hallway next to the router. WiFi extenders only partly solved the problem. This Mesh system is superb and I’ve finally got seamless 100 Mbps WiFi throughout the house. Cheers!

Lowbank I’m with Vodafone broadband and had similar speeds. Mine was really poor so I told them I need engineer to come and look at my set up (Don’t accept any excuses). He came to see mine. He chased all the wiring back and found flaws in the wiring set up. He sorted it now I’m getting 24 download speeds.
Give your supplier a call and insist on a visit. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Hung on until Black Friday and managed to get the Deco m5 for £139.99, which is great.

Started this simple installation and downloaded app. It adked for my Internet user name and password!
What's that all about? How would I know that?

It’s asking for the name of your current WiFi router and password. This is the router you will be plugging your first Mesh unit in to. I’m with Virgin so my router name starts VM and then has seven numbers. I’m not telling you the password ;) !

Is there a sticker on your router with username and password?

Thanks guys. Been a long day.
Phone doubling up predictive text and computer would not sign into something on Microsoft. Suddenly suggested a 'refresh with Edge'. Said it would remove useless programs like Acrobat reader.
Out come is all programs appear to have gone, inc office. It was a very old version. Not sure i have the discs now!

Can you even reverse that? I do not like Edge at all!

I got the Tenda Nova MW3 (4 units) for £80 about a year ago. Totally improved my wi-fi in areas of the house. I was on a very slow internet connection at the time (only about 6Mbps download). That speed was still working for my streaming needs but Chromecast in the kitchen was awful. Mesh Wi-Fi completely solved it.

I've since drastically updated my internet speed (working from home and more streaming due to lockdown) and am benefiting from that speed across the house. I also have an added benefit that I'm having some CCTV installed that needs LAN cable connection and (randomly) our phone connection and router is in the bedroom but we can have the CCTV system in another location as the mesh units have LAN ports.

What can I do to improve this speed??? This is my normal speed.
Is there a 5g receiver/modem option there yet? That would bypass any cable issues (as long as you are in a 5g area anyway? )

Thanks, I don’t think we are a 5G area, our 4G is pants at times here.
