Designated Survivor
What the heck happened??
You have a perfectly good White House/Terrorism yarn and then go all pc in Series 3.
Never mind about all the good storylines they had and could have had, let's have stories about:
the President's daughter getting her first period;
the President suddenly has a transgender sister in law;
the Secret Service guy Mike, in from the start, suddenly disappears and is replaced by a gay Secret Service guy;
the technology geek is replaced by a gay technology geek;
the Chief of Staff's mother has cancer;
the new Chief of Staff has a wife addicted to pills;
etc etc
If they are not careful it will lose viewers and get cancelled..........oh, wait a minute.

Re: Designated Survivor
It was really enjoyable for first 2 series then ABC cancelled it. Netflix picked it up for series 3, but the writers/cast had moved onto and committed to other shows

Re: Designated Survivor
Yes, it was a good original idea and the first series in particular I really enjoyed, but it could only have so much "legs" and fairly soon into series 2 it became pretty rubbish and i stopped watching. I felt Homeland was similar and I lost interest as the thing became more and more convoluted.

Re: Designated Survivor
I haven’t watched it since series 1 but I’m intrigued to know how a plot line about someone getting cancer is considered “PC”

Re: Designated Survivor
My point was it had gone from a good yarn about politics and terrorism and switched itself to "issues"".
I forgot to mention that even the great bioterrorism plot was only directed against people of colour(if that is how you say it) by white people of course.
Also, don't forget the various plot lines about white people making life hard for the immigrants.
I was making the point that they were ruining the programme in the pursuit of pc storylines and would risk losing viewers and getting cancelled and that appears to be exactly what happened.
PS.
I saw an interview yesterday with one of the new actors bemoaning the fact that they wanted to do a lot more with the black and gay storylines but couldn't - because they got cancelled!!

Re: Designated Survivor
Season 3 was about a bioterrorism threat where the terrorists were trying to release an agent that killed only people of a certain race and your complaint is that the season was too politically correct?CaptainKirk wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 6:01 pmWhat the heck happened??

Re: Designated Survivor
Fwiw season 3 was easily the best season.
I'd stopped watching part way through season 2 because while it was OK, it wasn't impressive. But I loved the season 3 story and the less wishy-washy writing.

Thanks for the summary, I’m glad you shared it. I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy it when we get to season 3, but I feel happier to carry on watching now.PeterWilton wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 9:18 pmFwiw season 3 was easily the best season.

Re: Designated Survivor
Good good. Let me know what you think.
The ironic thing about the OP is that while complaining that the show became "PC" in the third season after watching it it will become clear that actually no longer having to deal with the constraints of being broadcast on network television in the US that the writers were allowed to explore issues more freely. So it's actually the first two seasons which are the "PC" seasons, and not having the freedom they later had when Netflix picked it up clearly held the writers back.

I'm about 20 episodes into season 2 at the moment and it's start to regain its feet after having a wobble for about 10 episodes. Riddled with continuity errors and ludicrous plot lines for a period but is recovering.

First 2 seasons were a good yarn: FACT
Third season (Netflix) went in a completely different direction, focusing on "issues": FACT
Got cancelled: FACT
Also, it is off putting when series regulars simply disappear and no one ever mentions them again. (I know why but it still grates).
And what's with all the foul language?? Who uses the C word on telly??
Anyway, I said FACT so I must be right.

Re: Designated Survivor
You manages to state two opinions as fact and the one factual statement was actually inaccurate. Which is pretty funny to me.CaptainKirk wrote: ↑Wed Nov 18, 2020 12:03 pmThis is getting hard work.

It actually got cancelled after season 2, it got picked up by Netflix for one season and they wanted to renew it but too mich of the cast had made other commitments.
Anyway, quit whining about a TV show you didn't like because you were upset by its politics. I thought that was what my lot were supposed to do.
Re: Designated Survivor
Season 2 episode 3 - Outbreak. Some chilling parallels to 2020 in this episode, it’s uncanny. That’s all I’ll say about it for fear of the thread being pulled.
Re: Designated Survivor
I'm half way through season 3 now, you can certainly tell the writers have changed. It's not the shift in emphasis for me, more the move to unnecessary inappropriate language.

Re: Designated Survivor
Early in season 3 i thought the same, but by the end of the season I hardly noticed the cursing.
