New Dave Thomas book due in April 2021
Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I couldn't find anything when I searched.
Not Such a Bad Life: Burnley, Gazza, Wrighty, Waddle and Me (Paul Weller (author), Dave Thomas (with).
Glad to see the prolific Dave Thomas is still writing about his beloved BFC, he has some collection to his name, a brief synopsis below for those interested, and you can pre-order now on various sites.
Paul Weller was a one-club player. He moved from sunny Brighton aged just 16 to dreary Burnley, with its grey skies, run-down terraced streets and mill chimneys, where riots were among the first things he saw. A more timid person might have caught the first train home. But he went on to play 252 games for the Clarets between 1993 and 2005. He would have played many more but for suffering the debilitating effects of colitis. It took a huge chunk out of his career, forcing him out of the first team. Other players might have capitulated, but he faced the problem head on, battled it and beat it and got back into the first team, with a promotion to the Championship. Remarkably, he was 'player of the season' the very next year. This is a real-life story of how to overcome obstacles and fight illness using courage, grit and determination. But it is also a story of the bullying, pitfalls and perils that await any aspiring footballer, the impact of managers and the inhuman cruelty with which players can be so casually released.
It's a hardback and it's 320 pages.

Paul Weller wasn’t a one club player. He also played for Rochdale & Carlisle and he left Burnley in 2004.tiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 10:51 pmApologies if this has already been mentioned, but I couldn't find anything when I searched.

Yes I thought he'd played elsewhere after leaving us, I was just quoting the article, at least they didn't confuse us with BarnsleyClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 11:00 pmPaul Weller wasn’t a one club player. He also played for Rochdale & Carlisle and he left Burnley in 2004.
Hopefully the book will be more factual, I've no doubt it will be given Dave's previous efforts. And I'm sure he'll sprinkle some funny tales along the way, as he normally does.

Well when he arrived at the town of Burnley from Brighton, he would not have been singing THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD

Jimmy Adamson said similar things about Burnley when he signed many years earlier, and he came from ....Ashington!

Re: New Dave Thomas book due in April 2021
I know Paul and his wife Zoe very well. He was offered a very good contract by Burnley but West Ham came in for him. Himself and his wife were ready to move to London and he was going to sign for WH until he got colitis. West Ham pulled out of the deal straight away. He was back up to Burnley quicker than Usain Bolt. Burnley's offer was still in the table and he signed. He was very grateful to Burnley as they could have let him rot as he made them very aware he was to sign for the Hammers.

I Recall Weller being a very good player with some medical issues..and I'm sure it was Arsenal who were showing interest in him....or possibly westham ? Ifs buts and maybe but his medical situation curtailed any further interest.

Re: New Dave Thomas book due in April 2021
So Paul moved to Burnley as a 16 year old, which puts it around 1991, given he was born in 1975. In 1991, I had just started seeing a girl from Burnley that went on to become my first wife and i don't recall any problems in the town back then that could be described as 'riots'.
Which riots is Dave Thomas referring to?

Yes we moved to Glasgow just after those riots, they weren't the main reason we moved north, but they did play a part in our decision.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 20, 2020 1:18 pmStoops Estate ? Think that was a year later though

He stopped in the George 4th as a youngster for his family placement.

I thought some wag would post a reply like that, nope the main reasons were family and work.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 20, 2020 1:31 pmDid you move to Glasgow because the riots had finished and you were missing the action
We must be a jinx because we went back down in 2001 for my sister's wedding, and the bloomin riots had kicked off again, we couldn't even go on a pub crawl round the town as they were all closing up early, needless to say my mother's new hubby wasn't impressed either with that or with the watered down booze, mind you I don't suppose he would be being used to the Glasgow nightlife and proper lager.
Re: New Dave Thomas book due in April 2021
Paul Weller made me very, very happy when I was on holiday in Italy one summer. I got hold of an English Sunday paper from a little shop and found out that we had beaten Wimbledon 1-0 with Paul as the scorer. That might have been just after a promotion. No internet in those days.
I've also got a vague recollection of my son telling me he had played against him in the Accy Combination after he had retired professionally. But that might be my memory playing tricks on me.

Well thanks for that... I had no idea the blurb had been issued... I promise you one thing...there are really good stories in this book. More than any I have read... since a Jimmy Greaves book years ago.
Mullen, Heath, Waddle, Wrighty, Gazza, Stan T, Robbie B and Glen Little. Talked to a dozen of the players he played with.

Not quite as good as the one at Oldham though. That's the one that always springs to my mind when I think of Weller. Shame his illness hampered him. Had high hopes for him and Paul Smith but neither kicked on for one reason or another.

Re: New Dave Thomas book due in April 2021
claretonthecoast...320 pages on Paul W...nope
320 pages on Paul W...Colitis, stories about Mullen, Heath, Waddle, Gazza, Stan, Robbie Blake, Glen Little, Ian Wright, games such as the end of season against Plymouth, the God-awful Cup defeat at Watford, and several others. Stories from a dozen other players and Stan T.
They might have jumped the gun on 320 pages as well. Final text doesn't get sent in til Monday.

Pretty sure it was the first home game back in what's now the Championship. If I remember rightly Weller had a great season that year playing right wing back.Erasmus wrote: ↑Fri Nov 20, 2020 5:04 pmPaul Weller made me very, very happy when I was on holiday in Italy one summer. Paul Weller suffers from Crohn’s disease not Colitis , he started with Colitis though , how he managed to play that amount of games is amazingtiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 19, 2020 10:51 pmApologies if this has already been mentioned, but I couldn't find anything when I searched.
