Have I Got News for You
Have I Got News for You
I used to like this programme, especially when Angus Deayton hosted it. Since then it's been OKish with occasional good shows.
Last night with Coren hosting again it was the worst I've seen. It's lost it. Hislop was predictable but at least active. Merton seemed subdued (is he ill?) and marginal. The male guest tried hard but was ineffective and Bakewell was half dead. Coren was her usual smugness, which I suppose is half the programme.
Oh for the good times - indeed the best I ever saw:

I used to love this, but it has been unwatchable for about 10 years now.

I record it, yet seem to end up deleting it most of the time, especially when it's presented by somebody not remotely funny. A full episode may get a few sniggers, but it's never a belly laugh.

It all just seems so forced now. Needs putting out of its misery.

I think there is a need for such programmes. Our so-called leaders do need to be held account for their (in)actions even it is done indirectly through ridicule. Nobody else seems brave enough to do it.

Yes, I suspect Merton and Hislop are throwing "n*****" and "f*****" around like confetti in the studio.Rodleydave wrote: ↑Sat Nov 21, 2020 9:58 amYou wonder in this woke age if the best bits are edited out now.

I thought it was good last night. It was fantastic a few weeks ago when Stephen Mangan hosted. It will be a sad day when it ends.

I don’t think it helps that they keep changing the host. Stephen Mangan would be a good shout as permanent actually.

Re: Have I Got News for You
Merton & Hislop have lost some chemistry, they used to have the funnyman/straight man relationship down to a tee but now they just seem to do their own thing.
I'm amazed Merton is older than Hislop. When it started it very much felt like Merton was a 20 something renegade playing off the 40 something straight laced Hislop. Now it's very apparent it's just two old men, which does seem quite as edgy.

Problem is even during lockdown with people stuck at home it's not worth BBC or ITV putting too much effort in as virtually everyone is watching Netflix instead these days.

Re: Have I Got News for You
That's a bit of a random statement to be fair. Millions of people in the UK watch BBC and ITV in the evenings.
I'm a celeb is getting 1 million more this year than last year. Around 10 million in the UK are watching it each evening - that's like 1 in every 6-7 people.

Re: Have I Got News for You
I think Ian Hislop has his finger very much on the pulse of what goes on in and around Westminster. Any humour currently tends to be of 'a dark type' with the pandemic dominating the news and I don't think Paul Merton is that comfortable presenting that genre of humour. I still look forward to the programme which tends to be better if at least one of the guests is able to make a significant contribution.

Re: Have I Got News for You
I was always a big fan of the programme, it's been hilarious over the years.
Havn't seen much of it recently but a few weeks back I caught 15 mins and the thing I noticed most was the performance of Paul Merton, I know he's a laid back character who can come back with very funny one liners, but I thought he was very slow and thoughtful in his responses. I hope he is well.

Re: Have I Got News for You
But programs like Strictly and I'm a Celeb are a huge exception these days. Generally on a Saturday night all you get now is rubbish like repeats of Mrs Browns boys or so called "talent" shows.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:46 pmThat's a bit of a random statement to be fair. Re: Have I Got News for You
If you look at the BBC listings for next week, there's no mention of "Mrs. Brown's Boys". There is a "talent" show, however, whether it's rubbish or not I don't know but there are plenty of watchable programmes. They're popular, too. Maybe you need to open your eyes a little, jrg.
