The year 2020

Is 2020 one of the worst years ever ?
Mrs Aclarets mum sadly passing away,
Uncertainty recently on and off the pitch at BFC, this damned disease that stops us supporting our team and spending time with our mates. I know it's about 6 weeks away yet, but roll on 2021.

Yeah, I think we'll all be glad to see the back of this year. Hopefully in 2021 we slowly get back to a bit of normality.

In the past people have told me they had 2020 vision, so slightly annoyed they didn't warn me about the last 8 months.

The worst thing this year for me was my dad passing away in January at the age of 60.

Nothing else has been an issue for me compared to that.

Sorry to hear about your Dad - with so much going on this year, you may have mentioned it on here earlier in the year.

I guess this year has very much been relative - it's effected some people much more than others. I'm going to my aunt's funeral this coming week (non-covid related), and some people have lost 3-4 close relatives due to Covid. Some people haven't been effected at all.

A very strange year.

So many sad stories this year.
On a personal basis I've had much worse years, but 2020 is the most miserable.

Your'e right, nothing compares to losing a loved one, so sorry GodisADeeJay81. We have had a bad time recently with Mrs Aclarets mum passing away.
Let's hope 2021 will give us something to smile about.

I put a post up about John Orme passing away earlier this year, because there is a clarettim on here who knew him, but at the time I didn't say John was also was my dad.

Touch wood Covid has only affected me (personally) via lockdown etc etc ...

Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost close relatives friends etc....

2020 will be a year a lot wish to forget (or remember) for very different reasons, as Frank says "A very strange year"

I've had worse years personally, I'd say collectively this must rank as the worst year that we've had during my lifetime though.

But I've enjoyed working from home and massively improving my work/life balance in the process. I've really missed socialising and playing/watching football but on the flip side it has freed up a lot of time to spend with my (immediate) family. I've really not found it too difficult and if things get back to normal in the coming months then I personally won't look back at this as a particularly bad year.

Yeah probably the worst year of my life, fortunately I’ve never experienced anything heavily traumatic so I should be thankful, but it’s been miserable being cooped up for months on end.

It’s definitely been crap no doubt about that on so many fronts, hopefully when they roll the vaccine out we can all get back to normal & start living again.

For me, it’s not been the best but...

My third daughter was born
I’ve spent more time with my kids than I’d ever get chance to
I’ve kept my job, half my salary but managed
Me & the Mrs don’t annoy each other like I thought
All my family have kept safe, despite a few getting Covid.

Could have been, and I expected it to be far worse.

I’m looking forward to 2021 but it wasn’t too bad from a personal point of view.

And you come across as a very likeable person and I'm happy for you. I'm in a similar position (apart from the kids - had no knock on the door yet), in that close family have had the sense to social distance and keep safe, and business wise I'm actually 40% up vs last year, due to people staying at home. Work is a lot better, but family being safe is the main thing.

Now I definitely wouldn’t have chose lockdown or this virus to occur. And in the grand scheme of things It’s been a bit lousy generally.

But overall I’m optimistic and positive and am very grateful for what I have gained this year.

Firstly our first son, who is also our young daughters first sibling.

Secondly I’ve spent every single day and night with them. 250 days of putting them to bed. Getting them up and dressed. Breakfast. Walks to the park at lunch.

I’ve built a bond with them and spent time with them I’d never have got.

Working from home wouldn’t be my preference five days a week. But also means from here on in even when normality resumes it will always be expected and accepted to work from home. Given a far better balance.

Had a far healthier lifestyle.

Signed up to some courses I’ve always wanted to do and passed one and part way through the other.

I’ve learnt to be more grateful about what we have. And what we actually don’t need.

Never struggled with but have further Increased my patience, optimism and realisation of what’s important in life.

On a non personal level the advances we will make through science and the like will be incredible. And we will be far better prepared for anything of this nature in future. Which is good considering the next one might me more lethal to more age groups and people.

I can’t wait to get back to normal. But for now every day gives you the opportunity to become better than we would’ve been pre Covid. I went to it thinking this way and that’s certainly helped.

Looked through a family album of my kids the other day. Both too young to know any different. And even just seeing their faces on those pictures has made me realised it’s been a great year.

Can’t wait to get on the turf. See my parents and family properly. Stop wearing masks. Book a holiday abroad. But for now il enjoy what I can.

Context is so important.

A great post. Thought went into writing it, and I'm sure spending 250 days with taking your kids to bed meant a lot. A very big plus.

What courses did you enrol on?

Exactly. We can either be angry at it. And look for blame. And I think that’s what a conspiracists do. Or crack on. Think positive. Look at the long term. And be grateful for what we have. Neither outlook changes the situation. But changing your view on it definitely helps. Of course I’ve had days where I’m ****** off. And definitely want normality to resume. But we will just have to bide our time.

My daughter (usually) gets up around 7 and goes to bed at 7. Even though our office is only 20 miles away I had to leave and get back before and after those times. Then two or three days a week I’d be staying in hotels.

Don’t get me wrong I actually love that aspect of the job. But I can’t believe looking back I’d have probably seen them two to four days a week max.

Instead I’ve spent my sons entire first six months with him and seen loads more of my daughter than I would have. We had a great bond anyway but this has made it even stronger.

You do see a lot about people’s characters during situations like this. Quite a lot of selfish people.

One course was work related - I did prince2 project management (both levels -foundation and practitioner). Been meaning to do them for years. But lockdown prompted me to do it. Passed both earlier this year.

Also on with a personal one. A photography diploma. It will take me a while to pass that. But even just prompted me to buy some new kit and keep practicing which has kept me busy in itself.

That’s the key. Keep busy. To be honest most of the stuff I enjoy is free anyway. Being outside.

It's been the strangest year I can remember.

There's been a lot of positives, a lot of good times and good things. But, I've lost several family members, including my dad, we've lost close friends and people we knew, so its been a difficult year as well.

Only my dad, although underlying conditions meant he had no chance once he contracted it. Of all the other people we know who died, 3 were definite covid linked.

Thank you. Yeah, I don't get how some people think it's made up. We've tried to help people's mental health the best we can, and we've inadvertently been a focal point for people in our Church to message. We've seen people, and their friends, get covid and be ok, others have been hospitalised and we've talked with friends who are carers and what they have seen has scared them. For those people, it's been very real.

By no means my worst year, have had several I would not trade for this year but it's all down to personal circumstances.

I would think globally has to be the worst in my generation and younger but had my parents been around, then this year would have been much worse personally I suspect, however, if they were around then I suspect this would have definitely been a year of intense worry, regardless of the outcome!

Fortunately not lost anyone I know, except for my best friend in Feb and that was cancer, it has left a hole in me and have not been able to celebrate her life yet, nor have I been able to be out and about as I do like to do, but trivial to many people and feel for them.

Not the worst, but it’s been immensely draining - as my partner works for the NHS and our daughter has underlying issues, we’ve essentially had to shield her since the beginning, while I had to put my hours in, albeit at home and not in the office. A lot of burning the midnight oil.

It's not been a bad year when you consider what some people will have gone through.

We managed to keep our business going after a brief and scary wobble for a few months when Covid first hit.
We navigated our way through with some help and support which we were extreamely grateful for.

We came out if the other side and got back fully operational.
Thankfully we have managed to get back on an even keel and now fully booked up for work until Jan 2022, so our short term future is secure baring anything out of our control happening.

This year has also given me a few valuable life lessons, and highlighted what is actually important in life.
Not that I was totally oblivious before, however sometimes you just need a little reminder.

It will be a year I am happy to see the back of, but also one I will appreciate for different reasons.

I know there are many out there who will have far more of a tougher year and time, and I wish them all the very best.
I just hope people can get back to normal as quickly and safely as possible, with as little damage and disruption as possible.

Keep safe everyone.

Not my worst year. It'll have to go some way to top last year. Which was horrendous and I contemplated suicide several times. It's the uncertainty for us that's the downer. Fortunately our jobs are safe (for now) and touch wood. Nobody has passed from Covid we know of.
We lost an aunt and a close family friend recently but both were not Covid connected.
We do have one close friend who is a worry in these times. She's a carer and seems to be working far more hours than she should because of Covid. She lives alone and as a former alcoholic is tempted to turn back to it as a crutch to get through this. She hasn't but has gained weight as she turns to food instead of alcohol to get through. Which in itself causes health issues.
Stay safe everyone.

I lost my brother (aged 60) suddenly just before the first lockdown and then in April my dad died (suspected covid) - he was living in a care home and as a result I couldn't even go and see him. Since then we have lost 8 more close friends - so I can't wait to see the back of 2020 as 2021 has to be better. Things are obviously not great with the Clarets - injuries, in-fighting and poor form but as we all know following Burnley is not an easy road and we are all eternal optimists !! UTC !!
