Just looking at the picture of Pope’s late save I see he closed his eyes! Soft Lad !

Huge sigh of relief here, too. I think my contributions to the 'swear box' went up considerably in the 2nd half. I've seen so many games down the years where a win was so important and this is added to that list. Nothing spectacular from any individual but a lot of grit and determination, especially in the midfield area where a lot of unselfish and unseen work was put in. Hopefully a bit calmer in our living room this evening.

I thought some of our approach play, particularly in the first half, was excellent. We pressed them very well.
That dropped off somewhat in the second half, but we had enough to see it through.

My concern is the amount of chances we create. Even the top sided who win 3-0 have to create 12 or so chances. We had just 2 last night. We cannot expect to score with so few opportunities

Nice report. That is an awesome image of Nick Pope. That is 100% natural instinct. Not even Billy Mercer can teach you this. There was probably a milli-second decision time in making that save

You're spot on, it's a bit like the instinct that strikers have to be in the right place at the right time - astonishing save from him last night.

I hope Southgate has seen that performance.

Won't make any difference though will it? I'd love to know what he does and doesn't see with Pope, Tarkowski and Mee.

Southgate will have only noted any misplaced goal kicks!

Historically, during our 4 and a bit PL seasons we don't need 12 chances to score - else we may have scored less than 5 per season. However it does depend on what you call chances. If by that you mean clear cut scoring chances then we might get 2 or, possibly, 3 per game. If you mean goal scoring opportunities in general then, like last night, we have several per game

No, you're more than likely right.
With Tarkowski and Mee i think it's more that they "old school" type defenders. Gareth is a dedicated follower of football fashion ;)

To be fair we had 4 shots on target out of 10

CT -on a par with Tom Heaton's at Old Trafford.I think it was Zlatan who absolutely smashed it from point blank and Tom got his frame in to block an absolute certain goal. How ball and GK did not end in the net staggered me

Very similar to Tom's - we've been blessed with goalkeepers this last seven or eight years.

He doesn't see the frills and doesn't sufficiently value the basics.

Or blessed with someone who can spot a good one?
BPF is decent, and on first impressions Jensen could be another.

Billy Mercer will have had a part to play with some of them but not Tom

How is our recent record against Palace Tony? I've always had them down as a side we struggle against but that's 2 wins in a row now

It is two in a row but they’d won the previous four after Hodgson had taken over

Always nice to beat a Hodgson team. Mee back for 2 games and two clean sheets. Coincidence ? The hell it is

Just read the report. I could swear that our first goal came from a cross by JGB from the right ( not left as reported). Also thought that the great save by Pope from Benteke was following a header but not from Benteke as reported. Maybe I am just confused ( I usually am )
