For the level we were at he certainly brought in some good players. Somehow he possibly didn't get the best out of them. Played a significant part on our journey though.

Bugger.

Was hoping they'd ditch SD and get him back in charge once the takeover is completed.

I don’t think he wanted akinbiyi sold & grays injury after never helped, he wasn’t a bad egg all in all.

Getting Gary Cahill and starting him showed his ability in judging a player for me.

Best young manager outside the premier league for me. Great appointment for Shrewsbury.

Good luck to him.

Bought some decent players in yet somehow we always seemed to be playing with the handbrake on until Owen Coyle came in and got us playing a different way.

It's nice to see he usually gets a good reception from the crowd on the occasions he returns to Turf Moor (Cotterill that it is, not Coyle ;) )

Looking back the football was not exciting but the names he brought in were incredible-and they arrived quickly. Hyde, McGreal, Cahil,Hartley,Carlisle, Thomas, Whittingham, Caldwell, Andy Gray, Mahon,Blake (second time), Akinbiyi,,Gray (the young winger then with Saints), Wade Elliott, Jordan, Djemba Djemba. If I gave it more thought there would be loads more.

It was the Blake sale to Birmingham that got to him

+ Frank Sinclair.

Warks - Thanks for the list, I'd forgotten one or two. I think he also brought Michael Duff to the club as well.

I'll say nothing on this other than to say he became a good friend of mine and I'm delighted he's back in work. Good luck to him.

Always has good things to say about Burnley. Had a very tough job on his hands. I remember one season when he barely had enough players to put a team out just prior to the season. Quite rightly gets a round of applause when he visits Turf Moor.

An interesting one is Cotterill. You have to wonder how he'd have been viewed if he hadn't been succeeded by Coyle. If another manager had come in and we'd continued on the same trajectory he may have been viewed much less favourably.

One thing I can say without any contradiction is that Steve still cares very much about our club. Only recently in an interview he was talking about Burnley and Barry Kilby so positively.

Why on earth would he have been viewed less favourably. I know we all have our opinions but he took over when we'd just about avoided relegation and had very few players, he left us having achieved not too much in terms of league position but with a squad of players that were far, far better than when he'd arrived.

Shrews have got a good appointment here, he knows the lower leagues, and what it takes to get teams promoted out of them, I think he'll do a good job for them.

The football he adopted at Burnley wasn't exciting, but he made sure we were comfortably clear of the Championship drop zone during his tenure, and he signed some decent players, Carlisle & Elliott were 2 that made a notable impact in our promotion campaign, the latter in particular signing his name into Burnley folklore.

Don't forget Grezza and Caldwell

Another of several vital steps to where we are now. How he pulled a team together so quickly I don't know.

There's plenty of comments about how he brought in good players but didn't get the most out of them. If Coyle hadn't got promotion but we'd got a new manager who'd carried on with the existing downward (particularly financial trajectory) then he may have been viewed as the foundation for administration rather than promotion.

Obviously all ifs and buts.

Ah Wayne Thomas - what a stunningly good investment.

:D :D :D

Thanks Cotts, the signing made me smile. I believe Cotts flew out to the USA (instead of the usual meeing at a motorway service station) to persuade him to sign, but the sale to Southampton for £1.2m made me laugh out loud.

It’s a good point. Apathy had well and truly set in.
It’s difficult to think back just to how much Coyle rejuvenated the whole club.

Yes they all played their part, I wanted to highlight the 2 standouts at Wembley, Wade scored a great goal, and Carlisle was a man mountain in defence.

But of course it was a team performance from all of them, and it's worth remembering that many of that XI were free transfers, or signed for modest fees.

Like Tony, I disagree.

Cotterill built a platform for the next manager.
He was unable to take them to the next step, I agree with that but he certainly left us in a better position than when he started. For that reason alone no one could ever have held him at fault had we plummeted after his tenure.

The bloke was left with about 8 pros when he started, a good few less than Coyle was!

If my memory serves me correct. Steve had his best striker sold every season he was here in the Jan window. Blake to Birmingham. Gray cannot remember but he nearly ran me over leaving the training ground like he was Ari Vatinan. Adi we all know.

I was one who was very sympathetic to the circumstances under which he operated at the Turf, he was good to listen to as well. Wish him all the best.

Dandeclaret will be delighted about this, as i know he was a huge admirer of his style of play and general manner around the club.

Didn't he also get money for Ian Moore!

I got the impression that despite all his hard work and desire, he was probably as frustrated as all of us that he couldn't push on with us. And the club supported him more then reasonably - remember the nineteen game winless run.

I remember a particularly grueling affair against a stubborn and well prepared plastic bag that we just could not break down, and then, out of nowhere, Luton Town appeared! That was some game.

He got a lot of stick for the style of football we played, and for the long run without a win, but he was undoubtedly a success as a Burnley manager, as he kept us in the Championship when we were on our knees financially. A really tough job he had, but he did all that was asked of him. I had a little chat with him at Stanley before the friendly and he seemed a very decent man. Good player for Wimbledon at one time as well, although his career ended early, I think, due to injury.

I met him once down at Gawthorpe when my lad was in the youth setup, he was a smart character who I thought at the time, would do better than he has.

He certainly did a very good job when he came in. I'm looking somewhat more from the financial side, when he left wages were something like 110% of turnover so that improvement had come at a real cost.

You just have to change the name to Edward Howe and the response would be like night and day.

Pretty much cemented us as a Championship club. When you look at the teams in that league and consider our budgets at that time and size of town, that was quite an achievement.

If Wiki is correct Gray was signed for 750k and sold onto Charlton for £1.5m. at that time that was a big profit for us, and it's worth noting that the infamous 19 game winless coincided with Gray's absence through injury, once he returned towards the end of that season we went on a run of 5 wins in 6 games, so it's does make you wonder what if had he remained fit throughout that whole campaign.

He did a good rebuilding job for us, and improved the squad from almost a standing start, but bloody hell it was time to part ways when we did.

I still think to this day Wade Elliott's performance for Bournemouth against us in the cup that year was one of, if not the best right wingers displays I've seen on the Turf. My memory is rubbish but I don't think it was that long after that we signed him..

I’d like to wish him all the best. We didn’t exactly pull up any trees under him, but the club as a whole, especially the playing staff, were in much better shape when he left. IMHO.
