There have been lots of threads on here about investing. I shared some AIM investments in the past that made money and some that didn’t.
So now I am retired and have been researching an investment portfolio for my holiday fund. Any money I make each year, the missus and I will spend on holidays. I have spent 6 months doing the research before setting this up . But it’s real money, so people can follow what happens over the coming months and years.
Strategy is to get 10-20% growth, which I will cash in and spend on holidays.

Set up a week ago and the first week was very good, so a good start.

Happy to answer any questions on why this fund or that fund etc.

Looks good - tech, in particular AI, will continue to be “the thing” for the next decade at least.

looks to be a conservative set, I have two of those but maybe through the different vehicles, my S&P has done very well over the last 7 years.

Just asked them to increase my Emerging Markets and add several Foundation Markets to change the mix last week, so we will see what the future brings, how often do you think you will sharing the changes to this portfolio?

If I wanted to dabble with this sort of thing, which site is the better one to use?

I think monthly provides a good indication of changes, when is your cut of for taking the funds for the holiday, interesting to see if you end up at a B&B, Butlins, Spain, Maldives or a month cruise, lol

There are several platforms you can do this on. I chose HL because they are big and have a very lot of options. Some cheaper options are limited in the options.
One big benefit when buying funds through this platform is they get the 5% buy in charge negotiated away. I used to invest directly but that cost me 5% immediately so that was a big consideration in using HL.
I am sure there will be other platforms that have the same discount, I just like the flexibility of HL.

You can open a SIPP or an ISA on HL and do this kind of investing for as little as £25 per month.

OK let's have a firm commitment, which month in 2022, for many I would have thought Jan 2022 was late for a holiday in 2022! Just remember no changing the rules half way through this now

This is managed by myself. Obviously each active fund has fund managers who manage that fund. I will share some screen shots of the funds I have been watching for over a year in a watchlist and tech stocks I have been watching for 3-4 months.
First are general funds I have been looking at for a year. Second is tech funds which I picked 3-4 months ago. You will see funds I decided to invest in and some I didn’t.

Freetrade is very good if you’re starting out, the app is well polished and pretty easy to use. Their fees are very low and their Stocks & Shares ISA is just £3 a month. Have a read around about different platforms.

Happy to give any advice I can. Having been investing for many years I have made some big mistakes and some big losses, which I hope I have learnt from. Plus can offer advice not to make those same mistakes to newcomers.

Just to add balance and show I have made big investing mistakes. Here is a screen shot of some shares I bought 11 years ago post my divorce. Aim shares I would no longer buy that tanked.

I've also started getting interested in Blue Whale Growth fund which is a techy fund with a Far East flavour. I've also got a large holding in Fundsmith Equity which has delivered an average 17.5% per year since inception about 10 years ago.
I'll certainly be interested in how your portfolio performs over the coming months.

One of my investment buddy’s was pushing Fundsmith Equity.

I want some newbies to have a go, that’s why I posted this, hopefully a few have a go and see they can make some money for their futures.

The BG fund managers get good returns compared with the average for that sector and charges are amongst the lowest. What’s not to like.

I worked for 40 years paying additional pension from my wages. Some of that money is now in this account for me to invest to go on holiday.
The other pension contributions are in very safe investments to provide me funds I can live off. That’s around 3/4 of a million.
I spent my whole working life thinking about retirement.
You can call it obscene, I call it long term retirement planning.
Something kids of today do not even think about it, I was doing it at 16.

Nope just an engineer for RR, lots of us around this area.
To be fair it’s not a massive amount to last for the rest of your life..

But I will say young people need to start and start now saving. It works in the end.

But personally I feel pretty uncomfortable with this kind of stuff being posted - and some of the amounts being quoted in terms of pension and the value of shares you are “playing with”

I’m someone who worked more than 30 years in a senior banking role and have a lot of knowledge of investment funds so it’s not through a lack of understanding of your posts. I just think with a lot of people losing their jobs and really struggling to put food on the table that this kind of thing is best posted on those specialist stocks and share forums like ADVFN and many more with like minded people who are interested in investing and not people who maybe struggling.

I don’t think it’s “obscene” and it’s just my personal opinion that it’s tough times for many - and we know from previous threads this year that some of those struggling are burnley fans on here.

Timely this, I've just sold my entire SIPP with HL so I can look at reinvesting it sometime next year. I've managed it myself for the past 13 years or so, when I realised I wasn't getting anything from financial advice other than dry bummed. Doing it myself in that period, I've grown it from around £25k to just shy of £300,000.

Don't get me wrong, theres been some hefty payments into the pension, but with around 20 years left of working (if I retire early) I'd hope to at least double the fund. Much like Lowbank, I've put a lot of thought and effort into my retirement plans, the best thing you can do is start early.

I’ve got the Baillie Gifford American fund. It’s done well. I used to have Pictet Robotics but moved out as it lagged behind most other tech stocks. I like Polar and Liontrust. Recently started on Green energy as I think it will be sought after from now onwards. Joe Bidens focus on green energy can only be good news. I’ve found Guiness to be the best fund for this. After having been burnt a bit by company shares I now mainly invest in funds. However 888 has done well for me.

I accept that.
But I was unemployed for 12 months in the 80’s , we have bad times in the economic cycle. But if you can save for your future I suggest it’s worth it.
There will always be people who are in difficulty .

I have just rebuilt a bike for a kid in Padiham who’s parents could not afford to repair it after it was stolen and then recovered.

A lad who was homeless with early onset MS and epilepsy, I helped him get a new home which he does not need to pay for.

So I am trying to do my bit.

This is a thread to try to get people to save and invest for their future financial benefit.

With all due respect not sure you are qualified to give that kind of advice.
As you well know you can afford to lose money if those stocks don’t do well - they are presumably all in the medium or high risk categories.
People who can’t afford to lose money I would hope would not be gambling in this way - and I accept you have done plenty of research but I have been involved in stocks and shares since the early 90s and have seen many unforeseen crashes in sectors and markets.
But essentially I just think there are more appropriate forums for this and to me it feels a bit crass.
If you also look at your original post and the portfolio you have put up this isn’t really trying to “get people to save and invest for their financial benefit”....it’s telling people what you have invested in and partly to point out how well you have done. Nobody in their right mind would take this as sound investment advice if you only had a couple of thousands of savings or were young and just started saving.

I agree whilst I done some amazing returns from company shares.
As I shared I have some amazing losses.
But with funds I have had some low losses but mainly gains but not as big as shares.

So now prefer just funds.
And trying to impart that learning for any newbies.

You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that.
Your wrong about the point about how wellI have done, that’s a week, it could easily tank next week. And I have posted actually screen shots of my big losses which never got better over 11 years.
There have been many investment threads over several years I have posted on, not any do I suggest you do what I do.

I posted this so people could follow it.
Unlike Aim shares this cannot be looked at as an influencer thread. If every claret bought in it would make no difference to the price. With a aim shares influencers can move share prices to make profit.


So it’s here for people to follow.
Think about hopefully putting some money in for their futures. Hopefully make some money.
Those who cannot afford to obviously cannot afford to.
