Re: U18's v Liverpool (a)
Well! at least the lads got a goal, I'd wager along with Chelsea & United Liverpool have one of the best academies in the country, so it's no disgrace to lose heavily to them, results such as this were always more likely due to the leap in class, the main aspect of our youth system is that the players develop either into contenders for a first team berth, or they can at least be sold onto FL clubs and generate income that way.

Does anyone know a way to find the lineups for our fa youth cup defeat there in 96-97 2-5 ?
Re: U18's v Liverpool (a)
I'd like to know too, as I went due to my cousin or some relative a long the line being in the Burnley squad.superdimitri wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 2:33 amDoes anyone know a way to find the lineups for our fa youth cup defeat there in 96-97 2-5 ?
We sat in the main stand, but I cannot remember anything about the game.

You must be a similar age to me. I went with my dad and don't remember much apart from being thrashed.
I thought for some time Michael Owen was in their team and seemed to remember him scoring a brace but after looking up online he was already playing for the senior team that season so it may not be him. According to sources I can find It was the previous year he was playing in the youth team as it that was the year liverpool won the FA youth cup.
Also wondered if Gerrard or Carragher was in the team that beat us.

Re: U18's v Liverpool (a)
I've seen it but I don't have any details at all unfortunately other than I've confirmed that the 1996/97 season is correct. I seem to recall that Michael Owen was in the Liverpool team and that it was played on a Saturday. Does anyone have a date for the game?Buxtonclaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 10:04 amReckon CT will have that info somewhere in his vast archives?

Good find claretonthecoast1882 - I looked all over for a team sheet and even went on ebay - I got Owen right but didn't recall Gerrard playing. There's only one player on the Burnley list I don't recognise, that's Adam Gray. I note that Killa Mawson was on the bench, now he's alongside OGS and Micky Phelan on the Man U bench.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 12:58 pmhttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Liverpool-v- ... Andy Parkinson made a career in the game and is still involved as a coach, although he never went to any great heights and played mainly in the lower divisions.
Also just noticed one of the Livepool subs was Ian Dunbavin who spent time at Shrewsbury and ended up at Accrington Stanley until the end of the 2013/4 season.

Parkinson was in the Tranmere team we played in 2000/01 after our promotion. John Newby played at Bury for a number of years and Stephen Wright had a good career, mainly at Sunderland and Coventry. I think there are two others in that Liverpool team who might have made a name for themselves.Ashingtonclaret46 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 3:44 pmAndy Parkinson made a career in the game and is still involved as a coach, although he never went to any great heights and played mainly in the lower divisions.
Of the Burnley team then you'd say Matt Heywood is the only one who had a career in the game.

Think Brian Flynn had that Danny Williams in the Liverpool side at Wrexham .

I recognise a few of the liverpool names off champ msnager 00, think a few had a decent career.
Dont think any of the Burnley lads did in terms of playing.

The only reason I remember it is because I used to do that phone thing (Club Line?) and you'd get Stan on there.

They'd both played their last games for us by the end of 1998, Smith at Macclesfield in October and Carr-Lawton in the Sherpa (or whatever it was called then) against Preston in December.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Dec 02, 2020 5:18 pmI don't know.

Actually, was it called "Club Call"?
I used to phone it when I was living on a boat and had no telly. I loved the Stan Ternent era, waffle and all.

Wow thanks for finding that! Don't know the scorers but I'm glad my memory was right about Owen.
Knowing his youth record wouldn't be surprised if he scored all 5.

Slightly off topic, but this got me reminiscing.
Burnley played Gremio in a friendly in 1997. I was only young but i remember there being a bit of hype about one of their players and i'm wondering if it could have been Ronaldinho? 1997/98 was his first season in professional football.

I remember the game as well as I think it was the first time I’d sat in the James Hargreaves stand, nice warm evening game I think, I was only 8!so could be mistaken.
Pretty sure the team we played wasn’t the correct Gremio though, something daft like that?

Re: U18's v Liverpool (a)
Taken from the Lancashire Telegraph.. it looks like wires may have been crossed as when i look at the picture of the programme, i can see the team is Grêmio Esportivo Brasil, also known as Brasil de Pelotas. They play in Brazil's second tier!
BURNLEY will face the boys from Brazil as part of a glamorous pre-season build up at Turf Moor.
Brazilian giants Gremio will visit Turf Moor on Thursday, July 31 - two days before First Division Manchester City.
Although there is no official confirmation, the prestige fixture could be used to mark the official opening of the new Turf Moor stands.
Manager Adrian Heath said: "We've worked really hard to get Gremio to play in this game and I'm sure all our fans will look forward to the match.
"Any side from Brazil at the top level always has players with wonderful skill and to see that on show at Turf Moor will be something very special.
"They have several big names in their team and it will be marvellous to welcome them here. There should be a big crowd at Turf Moor."
Burnley also had discussions with Dutch team Feyenoord but with Gremio on tour in England, the date was ideal for the Clarets.
Burnley's pre-season schedule is now falling into place nicely with a week in Northern Ireland already confirmed from July 19-26 when the Clarets will play four games in the province.
The Nationwide League season kicks-off on Saturday, August 9.

He'd set up the entire pre-season before leaving - including the trip to Northern Ireland with four games in a week that Waddle didn't want but couldn't cancel.
