Incredibly brave and skillful young men as were all the bomber crews and fighter pilots of WW2.

Not only that but these guys had to wear a mask for hours and hours on end, in freezing, cramped, conditions while being shot at.

Some people today won't wear a mask for a few minutes while they pop into a shop :(

The shot of the Mohne Dam reminded me of Christmas 1996 we went over to stay with my Step son and his then wife in Unna Massen, we had a day out and visited the Dam and walked across....

Visited the Mohne Dam and The Sorpe a few times when I was a kid in the late 60's ( my Dad was in the army and stationed near Dortmund) and I'd love to go back again some day with an adults perspective.

I'm sure we also visited the Eider Dam on a school trip but I can't recall it being as impressive as The Mohne

I wonder if this programme will re-assess yet again the affect of the dam raids.

At the time it was claimed to have had a major impact on the industrial activity on the Ruhr. Later this was revised as saying it had limited consequences for the Germans. I seem to recall it was said that there were no follow up raids on the subsequent repairs which could have enhanced the impact. More recently I think someone said it was in fact very effective.

It was still of course a stunning achievement, as was the sinking of the Tirpitz by 617 and 9 squadrons, even though this achieved very little as the battleship was next to useless at that point of the war.

Yes there has been some debate about that over the years, especially as 56 Allied aircrew were lost as well as many civilians on the ground, many of whom were forced labour, and the dams were repaired in about 6 months.

Others argue that it was a success as in addition to the immediate infrastructure damage inflicted in the Ruhr valley the repairs diverted thousands of man hours and huge resources that the Germans could have been deploying to their war effort more effectively elsewhere.

There's also the huge morale effects of the dam raids which shouldn't be underestimated either.

One of only two Lancs in the UK can be seen at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Museum at East Kirkby. It’s great day out to see Just Jane starting her four Merlins.

When I was in the Band of Royal Air Force Germany in the 1960s our job was to promote Anglo/German relations. We went to play at the Mohne Dam and our Director of Music committed the biggest faux pas possible by playing The Dambusters! He was sent home to avoid any further incident, however, the lads in the band were very embarrassed and it is still a talking point 56 years later.

Cracking programme this one though and well put together ---how did they manage what they did without computers? Mind you, the computer would probably have said NO!

This must be one of them.
Rushed out my from door to take this at the end of Sept.
Had heard it first, then saw it a doing a pass a little earlier on my way home, in the Hope Valley, just over the hill from the dams.
Heard it again coming in and rushed out with my phone to snap flying very low over my head!
Only managed a quick snap. Missed some of the wing. Then it had gone over Mam Tor, before it banked back down Edale
Those engines sound very, very powerful. Impressive machines.
Seen one before, but never so close overhead.

It's a cracking tune, but yes I agree there's a time and a place, and that was neither the time or the place.

As to how they achieved what they did, well! they had plenty of dummy runs prior to the real thing, and they also possessed nerves of steel.

There's four surviving Lancasters in the UK: BBMF (flying condition), East Kirby (being slowly returned to flight), IWM Duxford (static) and RAF Museum Hendon (static).

Taken from my garden in South Lincolnshire a few years ago.

It may look like a fantastic shot of the Lancaster crossing the full Moon but it was a quick opportunist shot in broad daylight. There was a tube on my lens for doing something entirely different.

So there really is a Lancaster on the moon? Fake news. (Actually if I remember correctly the Daily Sport WW2 bomber on the moon story was a B25 Mitchell but it was a long time ago....)
