Tinned Food Count v Everton

Post by Redbeard » Thu Dec 03, 2020 12:02 pm

Do we have a volunteer Officiator for tomorrow's Count?

Earliest start for Estimates would be 11.30am tomorrow, giving us 24 hours plus one more for Count Result and winnners' announcement before kick-off at TM.

UTC!! :)

I have a tin of baked beans that could be available for a count tomorrow - that's if I don't get too hungry tonight.

Or if allowed a rather unusual selection, a bag of spinach! Of course there is no juice for this - at least there shouldn't be!

I have some experience of being a counter having done blueberries and a very challenging tin of mixed beans. However that was in 2013 and I would be a bit ring rusty.

I seem to recall, Hipper, that the blueberries were in juice and the mixed beans in water. These were much better selections than baked beans in all that messy thick tomato sauce. And though the blueberries may in fact have been dry and spinach be Countable by leaf, the absence of joose might fail to please your Estimators, all of whom no doubt would want both opportunities, rather than one, to score points.

I for another would like to see you in charge, but first making a more practical choice of Commodity. 8-)

I like the non tinned variety to this offering from Hippier. To get the liquid into the game he could pour himself a random glass of liquid to consume while doing the count. We then guess the ml content of this.

Technical question, Sir.
Would it be legal to take a measured amount of liquid, say 100ml, and sieve it through the beans + joose. Whatever measure is caught below just deduct the 100ml and count as joose?
I don’t use the gunk from baked beans or kidney beans in a chilli, so it isn’t wasted.

Good question!

I would suggest much more “wash” liquid though

Huw, what you suggest is allowed, but only in the case of no better or easier Commodity being at hand. And why indeed would you do this when perfectly good tins are available? Accuracy of measurement besides would be adversely affected, if not necessarily by much.

Longsider's suggestion meanwhile is utterly ridiculous, and indeed Rule 5(b) states that 'joose must without exception be obtained from the same tin as are the food units'. Might I remind us all that capricious innovations are guaranteed only to upset the mystical powers and thus to ensure negative rather than positive match results: thereby totally defeating the whole object of the Count.

I'm sure Hipper understands this. Or at least I hope so... :(

Unfortunately in my pantry the only tinned product is baked beans in tomato sauce.

I have to admit I didn't sleep well last night because of this puzzle of separating the sauce from the beans. I know doctorates have been written on the matter but I don't recall any satisfactory solutions (it's rumoured that the Soviets, on receiving a tin of baked beans via the Murmansk convoys of WW2, did many studies on the subject but nothing of this work has reached the West even now. Perhaps there are some papers still hidden in a safe deep in the Kremlin).

My current thought is that if I stored the tin upright the beans will sink to the bottom so most of the sauce will be at the top. I then remove the lid and turn it over onto a cheese greater (with larger holes then your typical sieve), and leave it for a fair time. Another possibility is to partially open the lid and leave the tin upside down at an angle. Finally I could sit the tin in hot water for a time on the assumption that the sauce will become thinner.

I had thought of this but I want to use the sauce.

There is also the issue of accurate measurement. However I do have some measuring spoons that should deal with this.

I'm afraid if I do this count I only have the baked beans or spinach. I don't believe spinach has ever been done before and in a season of likely major changes for our club perhaps it wouldn't be such a bad choice, lack of juice aside.

I await your guidance oh wise Admiral.

Hipper, I have already completed my guidance for you in my post timed at 8.37, above.

If after reading it you can't see the need to obtain a more appropriate tin from the corner shop, then I suppose you'll have to go ahead with your gloopy beans.

At least it will be better than bloody spinach  - and, you never know, we might even manage a draw.

May I interject at this key stage, I have in my larder a tin of Morrisons Mandarin Segments (in light syrup) 312g. Mrs Z was saving them for a special occasion, I am sure she'll be happy that I chose one for her, especially if the admiral is concerned about beans.

Just let me know and I'll step up and be counter.

I use spinach mostly in salads where I prefer it to the usual lettuce. I also occasionally boil it and put it in scrambled egg!

It gives poo a nice dark green colour if that interests you.

In salad or with eggs, and whatever colour it brings to your defecated matter, Hipper - it is NOT a suitable medium for a Tinned Food Count.

And as you say, we need a win. 8-)

As it happens, we have used Mandarin Segments a number of times before with considerable success.

They were a favourite Commodity of our old Counting Chief 1959_60.

Instead of prolonging this thread with such irony, PS, we might better now leave space on the board for the upcoming Count thread itself.
