Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
I've been asked to give the eulogy at my God-fathers funeral in Hertfordshire on 21st December ...
Planning to go by train, I can't seem to find out whether this service is running, or is it a bus replacement service where I may miss my connection from Manchester Picadilly ? Can anyone help ?

Think direct trains are only once every 3 hours or so at the moment. No one uses the burnley to manchester trains at the best of times, been empty ever since they started. To go south it is easier to go to Preston.
If you have to go from manchester probably best to get the bus or go via blackburn or Hebden bridge.

And depending which part of Hertfordshire, you may be better off going to Leeds then take the East Coast line. No good if you are going West of the county (Watford, Hemel, Tring, Berkhamsted, Rickmansworth etc) but anything more central/East it could be a better option.

Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
If you use the Trainline App it should give you your route and usually good prices
Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
The X43 might be a better option. Northern Rail are pretty unreliable at the best of times. Trains often seem to be cancelled at the drop of a hat with no explanation.

It's in Berkhamsted at noon, but thanks ! Manchester Picadilly to Milton Keynes, then 28 minutes to Berkhamsted ....Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 3:03 pmAnd depending which part of Hertfordshire, you may be better off going to Leeds then take the East Coast line. Not my experience on the times I have used them - quite a few people on. The only issue is that it's a long climb up to Manchester Road station but at a busy time the X43 can get dreadfully delayed in the Manchester traffic.thelaughingclaret wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 2:54 pmThink direct trains are only once every 3 hours or so at the moment. Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
Thanks to everyone for their replies .... I've decided to drive to Manchester Picadilly, park next to the station at the long stay car park ... 8.05 Train gets me into Milton Keynes at 9.42, with the connection arriving in Berkhamsted at 10.22, with later options in case of delays etc ...
I must be getting old or something .... I'd have thought nothing of driving 430 miles in a day 20 or even 10 years ago, but I'm waiting for a 2nd new hip and have a temporary Blue badge so the train it is !!

If it's the multistorey car park next to Piccadilly station that you are going to park at then beware it's very expensive on weekdays. Its over 20 quid to park for up to 24 hours Monday - Friday.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 7:08 pmThanks to everyone for their replies .... Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
I always use the bus if going to Manchester but that's for two reasons, I'm close to a bus stop and it's free with my bus pass. It is a regular service though and terminates just a few minutes walk from Piccadilly but I do take your point on the traffic problems. On occasions, if going in or coming out at anything like peak times I tend to use the tram to Prestwich and bus from there.
Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
Yes...I've done the Prestwich shuffle on occasion! One frustration with the X43 is when the bus fills up at Burnley and I have to wait for the next one.......knowing full well that there will be a dozen or more people getting off at or before the top of the hill where the bypass crosses over. It's a good service though.

Go to Tod - bus or car - then 31 mins to Victoria. Very frequent.

Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
In my many years of getting the X43 from Manchester i can't believe I've never contemplated getting the tram to Prestwich... I've been on a few bus journeys that have taken well over 90 minutes to go from Manchester city centre to Prestwich. Thanks for the tip!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 5:16 pmI always use the bus if going to Manchester but that's for two reasons, I'm close to a bus stop and it's free with my bus pass. Not my experience either when I've used that service. Usually pretty busy, and unless you get there really early, car park and surroundings full.
Maybe it is quieter at off-peak times.

Re: Burnley to Manchester Victoria ...
Depends on the timings but at busy times it is worth it and the walk from the tram station to the bus stop is only a few minutes. It will cost you more obviously but I find it worth it if I don't want to be stuck on Bury New Road at rush hour.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 10:28 pmIn my many years of getting the X43 from Manchester i can't believe I've never contemplated getting the tram to Prestwich...
