Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
I heard a question being asked in a pub, but had no time to hear the answer.
If you stand on the Town Hall steps is it possible to leave the Borough of Burnley without crossing water?

That’s a good question and I suspect at first thought that you can’t.

A quick look on Google Maps suggests not.

Good question. My initial thoughts were definitely not - especially given the weather...
Maps would suggest not.

Only by walking up one bank to above the source of the river, crossing over and walking back down the other bank.winsomeyen wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:10 pmI heard a question being asked in a pub, but had no time to hear the answer.

Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
Sorry. I was born in Burnley but other than the football club I know next to nothing about the town. I wouldn't know how to get to the Town Hall from the Turf. I just thought that the question seemed implausible but that's quite a complex water system in the town centre!

The answer appears to be walk down Elizabeth st to the canal behind Tesco and walk on the canal bank towards brierfield.

Go under the canal. Up Brunshaw Road. Make your way to Long Causeway. Where does Burnley stop?

Look at an aerial photo, it's not possible.
Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
I was assuming crossing meant going over. You wouldn’t say, you crossed water through a tunnel for example. But you would cross a bridge.winsomeyen wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:35 pmIf you go under the canal ie the culvert you have crossed water.

This is true: I know someone who can walk under water at least 12 ft deep. He doesn't float.

The complete borough is absolutely encircled with watercourses mainly the brun, Pendle water & the canal without even thinking about the tributaries, you would need to be airborne & not pedestrian.

Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
This is the thing - even if you'e airborne you could be classed as crossing it.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 9:46 pmThe complete borough is absolutely encircled with watercourses mainly the brun, Pendle water & the canal without even thinking about the tributaries, you would need to be airborne & not pedestrian.
The original question is vague.
Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
not that vague, as long as it is limited to rivers and canals, if you were to be pedantic and say well what about all the drains and sewers then there is not way yo could do it.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 9:49 pmThis is the thing - even if you'e airborne you could be classed as crossing it.

If on the other hand the town hall was classed as some form of sanctuary, then just turn around and walk inside and you're out of the borough to all intents and purposes.
Am beginning to think it is a trick question as in above cases, however when you look at the aerial picture I posted I did spend a little time (yes, sad I know) and thought I could get out but I am not sure on the boundary limits, apart from that not vague at all lol

I could get into my car and drive out of Burnley. Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
I agree very vague, we are all pretty much guessing as the OP question isn’t specific or precise to what determines crossing any water, you’ve got a network of drains & pipework running underground so effectively you are always crossing water.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 9:49 pmThis is the thing - even if you'e airborne you could be classed as crossing it.

Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
It’s not possible. Look at google maps for 20 seconds and you can see why.
Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
actually if you read just the thread title question, then no, it is as we know practically impossible to walk on water but then if you look at the OP clarification, then maybe if I got in a hot air balloon and went straight up, would I leave the borough, is there a height limitation? Yet if we apply it to walking, then I still think the answer is yes.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 9:57 pmI could get into my car and drive out of Burnley. I don't think Google Maps are that good, if I use the aerial picture link below I think there is a way, not driving but walking as per the thread, but just an opinion and am not going into route points or anything beyond this

As an aside a guy I worked with who was a local historian said if the Germans had of bombed the culvert in the second world war the end of the war would have been delayed as most of the forces uniforms were made in Burnley and the flooding would have stopped production for months. Folklore?

But the city away 5-1 under stan when were top always stuck with me. Defining moment of that season and stans career here.
Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
If there was no other place in the UK where clothes could be made, then perhaps. But if there had been any possibility of shifting production to somewhere else, then no. I suspect they would have found a way.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:22 pmAs an aside a guy I worked with who was a local historian said if the Germans had of bombed the culvert in the second world war the end of the war would have been delayed as most of the forces uniforms were made in Burnley and the flooding would have stopped production for months. The tale I heard was Burnley would be Flooded if the Culvert Bridge was Blown up.the nearest locks being Barrowford not sure about the other direction.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:22 pmAs an aside a guy I worked with who was a local historian said if the Germans had of bombed the culvert in the second world war the end of the war would have been delayed as most of the forces uniforms were made in Burnley and the flooding would have stopped production for months. Re: Can You Walk On Water Or Under It
There's a 24 mile stretch between locks, but I strongly suspect they will have some sort of gate or other way of preventing a flood.
But even if we take 24 miles. Convert it into metric for easier calculations - 40km. Average width = 5m, so I'm told, which means the surface area of the canal over 24 miles is 0.2 square kms.
Burnley as a whole is 15.82 square kilometres, but some of that is uphill. Let's call it a square mile of flood plain - though I suspect it's a lot bigger. A square mile is 2.56 square kilometres, so it's 13 times the surface area of the canal.
Therefore the average depth of water would be a thirteenth of the canal depth, since the area is 13 times more. If the average canal depth is about a metre, that means the average depth of water in Burnley would be 8 cm or 3 inches.
Bearing in mind that water would be flooding out through the culverts as it was flooding in through the canal, that would mean it would never actually get 3 inches deep. I don;t think they needed to worry unduly.

Yes..... walk up Manchester road to the weavers triangle.... get in the canal and swim in the middle of it until you reach the Burnley border. You will neither have crossed water or gone under it..... as long as you keep your head out of course.winsomeyen wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:10 pmI heard a question being asked in a pub, but had no time to hear the answer.
