Five subs extended until at least Dec 2021

Post by ClaretTony » Wed Dec 16, 2020 2:15 pm

Being able to use five subs has been extended until December 2021 but is likely to run until June 2022. The Premier League is now the only major league that hasn't adopted it.

Concussion subs will be trialed from January, IFAB have approved, and that will lead to additional substitutions.

Which will lead to a huge increase in “concussion” injuries for big clubs for the rest of this season.

Until they realise you can't play for 7 days afterwards.

Watching BBC news and they mentioned trialling extra "Concussion Substutes" in FA Cup 3rd round.

My wife harrumphed and said "I suppose that means there will be a spate of concussion injuries by some teams abusing and cheating the rules then" echoing whats been said by a lot of people...

I will say this she has no real idea about football ... and if she sees this without knowledge of the game.... surely the mandarins in the game proposing this can......

There has to be an extension of the time a player cannot play if substituted for "concussion"

The simple solution is, if you are taken off concussion, then you miss the next game regardless of if you pass the subsequent concussion tests or not.
That would prevent teams from abusing the system

Ah but is not confirmed concussion...it is a full assessment! All clear, afterwards!

Well that would just mean that players wouldn't go off with suspected concussion.

I'm not sure if people realise that the concussion tests are fairly involved. In rugby for instance they do baseline tests throughout the season testing cognitive performance, co-ordination, etc and compare the results to those on match-day with suspected concussion. They initially had issues with players doing badly on purpose in the baseline tests to lessen the chance of them being diagnosed with concussion and still be able to play on but they're meant to have resolved that now with answers that aren't that obvious.

Extended? I honestly wasn't aware it was in force. I don't pay a great deal of attention and I cant see Burnley ever making 5 subs, I'd wager a bet we never do

I don't get it why we need concussion subs?

The thinking and logic behind it is that they don't want 'tactical decision to overshadow the medical decision'.

What this means is that if they have already used their subs, they don't want someone playing on with potential concussion.

So by having subs which can be used for concussion it avoids the tactical thinking that may otherwise happen.

What happens if they haven’t made all their substitutions prior to a concussion?

If a player gets a crack on the head in the first 5mins and has to go off, does that substitution still count as the “concussion sub” and so still allowed to make a 5 further substitutions?

NFL have concussion rules.

The game is watched by experts, each team is assigned a neurotrama expert who checks players if they show signs of concussion.

If a player is suspected of having concussion they're not allowed to continue playing and there is no set return time for when they can play again, however it's not a quick process and all the criteria has to be met.

Teams can be, and are, fined if they don't follow the protocol exactly and in some cases they could be denied draft picks.

Now all of this could easily be introduced to football with some appropriate changes.
If a player suffers a severe enough head injury, they're subbed off.
Then they have to follow strict checks and restrictions on training etc with a minimum downtime put in place.

Yes top clubs could take advantage but it's less likely if a player has to miss a set amount of time from training and games.

The FA can employ the neurotrama experts for each game and rotate them regularly so they remain independent.

I remember CLaret Tony’s concussion test well. Wave smelling salts under the nose rub your head, ask how many fingers can I see... “Quick back you go, they have a corner”. It never did moo any harmony.
