Half and half scarves

Saw this picture in an old school bakery in baxenden. Run by an old dear who was a rovers fan. But said she didn’t mind Burnley apart from the fact we are and always were better.

As much as I hope our record against them continues beyond their 34 years. It is good for the area to have that rivalry.

Amazing to think these days that some people went to one one Saturday and the other the next.

As to half and half scarves, I bought the Burnley and Sheffield United one and wondered why I did afterwards. it's now in a pub in Radcliffe.

I used to go alternate weeks to Rovers and Burnley in the late 60's. At the time I was about 13 and used to go on the bus from Accy. Just glad that I followed the correct path. Which bakery in Baxenden was it?

More than some lots used to do alternate Saturdays.... so you ended up with my Dad a Claret his best mate Wover. Even the Walkers family were split due to doing this.

As for half and half scarves, they make a nice momento I suppose, but wouldn’t care to wear one. I only support Burnley

Been to Ewood Park many times as a 'neutral'. Remember a game in the mid 60's where B'burn were 1-2 down to Newcastle but in the 2nd half Mike Ferguson put on show an absolute masterclass midfield display and B'burn went on to win 4-2.
In '63 I'd just started grammar school in Salford and we were away to Everton. No chance of me being allowed to go there so I went to Ewood Park with my cousin where Spurs were beaten 7-2, a scoreline we replicated against them.at the end of the same season. (We won 3-4 at Goodison Park by the way, Arthur Bellamy scoring a first half hat-trick to put us 1-4 ahead at the break).

Anyway, I sat down looked behind me and recognised a man, I said at the top of my voice ‘are you Mark Ford who plays for Burnley?’ He absolutely **** himself... never forget his face

The only half and half’s I ever bought were from our fleeting Europa campaign, got one from each home tie. They’ve been in the boot of my car ever since!

I went on with a mate, we were away at Hartlepool and work meant I could not make the trip.

I’d just got through the turnstile when a bloke from work ran up to me me “What are you doing here... where are your colours... his face unzipping my jacket to reveal claret, I will never forget.

I used to watch Burnley one week then the Rovers the next week in the late fifties and until mid sixties,but only if Burnley was away. Great times and some superb players for both sides . My allegiance was always with Burnley when the two met and when I was old enough to take myself down turf,I kicked the Bastids into touch..

Both teams had some great players and I don't regret a moment of it..

Under normal circumstances I reckon they'd have sold well amongst the home fans for the Burnley v Leeds fixture. Would have been a great momento to show your grandkids that once of a day Burnley were as good and for a period better than the mighty Leeds

On the main road down from Holland’s. Don’t know if it was a bakery or just sold Holland’s to be fair as nipped in for a brew on the way past.

It was at a time we were never on tv. And never thought I’d see top flight football.

I’ve only bought one once, I’d forgotten my usual scarf and picked a half/half one at a service station on the way to the League Cup semi at White Hart Lane to help me keep warm.

I found it the attic room last year, brought back many memories, then I just binned it.

Yeah I mean 2000, I must have been half asleep writing that.. it was a midweek game in the school holidays, I’m guessing cheap entry as well. I’m pretty sure they lost 1v0 or drew 1v1, I remember being impressed with their club shop compared to ours

My Grandad and his mates used to travel the local clubs when they had big games on, or a star of the time was playing.

Back then with no football on TV players were likely built up to be much better than they were in some cases, as the only way of seeing them was being there at the match. I’m sure they were good, don’t get me wrong. If Burnley were away groups of fans would travel by train, mainly to Deepdale and Ewood in my Grandad’s case, and see the big players on show.
If Ted Drake of Chelsea was at Deepdale loads would go over, and also the same might happen at the Turf, so they’d meet drinking buddies in certain pubs before the game.

My Grandad says the only club we played where there was any real trouble, and on a seemingly regular basis, was Everton. Their fans were always looking for trouble. He says that even in the mid/late 1950’s fans would be fighting. Liverpool were no bother though apparently.

Football seemed to be less tribal back in those days. I can recall going with my Dad and he and his friends would be really disappointed if the opposition's star player wasn't playing. Today we'd be delighted. I also recall Ron Atkinson saying that when he was a boy they used to go and watch Birmingham and Villa playing on alternate weeks and support both teams.

Went 2 or 3 times with a mate from school - a couple of times when they were in Europe. Was always a bit jealous of the facilities at the time - we didn't do much professionally.

Always wanted them to lose though - saw them get beat by Everton, a Turkish side and Sunderland - infact the only time I saw them win was against us

I’ve only been in away end at Ewood. Even driving past on match day around there is unpleasant, seeing those ugly blue and white shirts..

Growing up in Accy, I have loads of mates and family who are B*****d fans. They dished out plenty in the 90s but strangely aren’t that into football now.

I went to Ewood a few times in the Spurs away end. Same really as you, never thought we’d get there, in Division 2. Our family had always had a soft spot for Spurs. When I went Spurs weren’t what they are now. The nicey nice team that’d get walked all over now and again, typical mid to lower table side. Spurs won once. A Blackburn fan gave us to grief on the way out thinking we were cockneys. My Dad turn round and said “Bastards lose at home and Clarets win away, what a day eh?” Pubs absolutely packed with Spurs fans and went crazy when the team coach came down the road. Once devastated Jurgen Klinsmann was out injured. David Ginola though, what a player. I always wanted him and Glen Little to be in the same side on either flank.

Went ewood in 1999 when they played Man Utd and got relegated, the chance to see them go down with a free ticket was too good to turn down.

Was in the upper tier of the Jack walker and expected an uncomfortable evening but seeing their fans sell their season tickets outside (being the last home game of the season) and sat in a tier mainly Man Utd and quite a few recognisable Burnley faces in their made it a really good night.
