Youth Setup
Youth Setup
During months of Furlough Iv spent time watching the U23s and actually taking some interest into this. Something Iv never really looked at due to time. I’m actually really impressed with some of the quality in our youth teams at that level especially recently.
The recruitment in that department seems to have been exceptionally shrewd and we may have some special players conning threw in the next few years
Big shout out to everyone who has contributed to moving this forward. Think this should be the way Burnley Football Club should be heading with high quality academy products and good young players brought in to help the first team

Re: Youth Setup
Absolutely, it wasn't too long ago when people were saying there was nobody in the youth teams good enough - and this was before McNeil came through.
Now we have McNeil and Benson, with one or two others being mentioned as in the frame. So things must have accelerated a lot in the last couple of seasons.

Benson didn’t come through our youth team though - signed from ArsenalFactualFrank wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:06 pmAbsolutely, it wasn't too long ago when people were saying there was nobody in the youth teams good enough - and this was before McNeil came through.

Re: Youth Setup
McNeil did, from 14, and people were saying we had nobody good enough when he was here. Either the youth team is improving or fans watching just don't spot the best players.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:08 pmBenson didn’t come through our youth team though - signed from Arsenal

Re: Youth Setup
This was the long term aim of the academy spending all that money, making it cat 2 and then converting into cat 1 to enable us to attract youth players of varying ages, incl ones like McNeil who've been let go by other clubs.
The quality of players will improve, but hopefully with that we will see more players moving into the first team squad.

Re: Youth Setup
McNeil came into the youth team at 16 and look decent. He made terrific progress under Michael Duff who pushed him forward early into the U23s.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:09 pmMcNeil did, from 14, and people were saying we had nobody good enough when he was here. Still a part of the youth setup though? He wasn’t signed for the first team was he.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:08 pmBenson didn’t come through our youth team though - signed from Arsenal

Re: Youth Setup
Part of the academy but he was beyond the youth team when we signed him. McNeil, however, was a scholar from 16-18.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:20 pmStill a part of the youth setup though? He wasn’t signed for the first team was he.

Re: Youth Setup
It was always going to take some time before the rise to Cat 2 and now to Cat 3 could make a difference to our youth team. Each level has enabled us to look for a different standard of player to bring in. It is a credit to the youngsters and their coaches that they are doing as well as they are this season given the significant step up they have made to Premier league 2 where they are playing against long established Cat 1 academies which have been recruiting staff and prospects for many years at this level.
The recruitment for the development squad has also been excellent with some very good prospects in there now and it is good to see them getting regular opportunities to be in and around the 1st team squad and SD/IW.

Re: Youth Setup
We seemed to go through a period, a few years back, where we brought in a lot of youth players released from top sides, McNeil, Benson, Renny Smith ect. Not all of them have come off but even if only one or two make it it's been worth it. It's been a good strategy and has already paid off with Dwight.
Moving forwards will we still be concentrating on signing youth in this mould, ie talents released from the big clubs or with the the change of category's will we look to concentrate on the players already in the youth system?

Re: Youth Setup
Stan Ternent wanted to scrap the youth set up and put all the funds into getting the big clubs cast offs. We now have the best of both worlds but he was ahead of his time in his thinking.Conroy92 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 2:45 pmWe seemed to go through a period, a few years back, where we brought in a lot of youth players released from top sides, McNeil, Benson, Renny Smith ect. Didnt someone once proclaim he was a world beater?
