Logged on to see if Mr Mason would be worthy of a thread after the farce today and not disappointed!

How is this guy constantly appointed games in any professional league is beyond me, the only thing you can say about Mr Mason is at least he’s consistent.......consistently shocking!

I know Mason has been shocking but Brighton have been worse

Terrible penalty and possibly 3 'can't miss/ shouldn't miss' opportunities.

He's tied himself in knots over the free kick goal, met himself coming back and then deferred to VAR.
Utter shambles.

He'll find some tweet which will allow him to pull out of the next game

It does beg the question who's worse Rob Jones or Lee Mason, I vote Mason, I'll give Jones the benefit of the doubt for now as he's still young and learning the game, but Mason hasn't improved in all his time officiating at this level.

I must say, that following football at present is far more entertaining and hilarious when we aren't actually playing..
Mason has been comedy gold today, and reading the BHA forum this evening should round off a good day.

I will never forget or forgive that hand ball on the line against Preston. Really early in the game, should have been a penalty and a red card. He turned round and ran away with Preston fans with their heads in their hands, then a massive look of surprise it wasn’t given.
He is not fit to ref a pub match, and every game he refs makes that so much more obvious.

I've not got over that either. From that moment you knew he didn't have the character for it. He didn't want to make such a big call early in a game, even though it was obvious.. he just bottled it. Can't believe he's still reffing now, seems like a lifetime ago.

And we ended the game with 9 against 11. He was every bit as bad in the same fixture in the following season, this time all the dreadful decisions going in our favour.

I know referees are exposed more now because of the tv coverage and all the cameras but I despair that the likes of Mason, Graham Scott & Rob Jones ever get near a football pitch and I worry that one day they will promote the clown Tim Robinson who has all the attributes to be the worst of the lot.

Apparently, he's still on to VAR in order to try and get out of the ground. Poor little, lost Lee.

here we go again. another scapegoat. Yes he had a poor game but a bad referee. Maybe you guys need to argue with the powers to be since he as worked is way right to the top and earned is right to be there.

Putting my "You have to be fair" hat on, did Mason blow a second time, thus stopping play? Was it then VAR who suggested that he give the goal? Then did VAR change the decision?

Face it pussy he’s inept and should have been potted over a decade ago.

That way, he could have retired to Spain. They let you take your local IP address with you these days, you know.

Seen a lot of good refs at local level, you know their good because at the end of the game you didn’t notice them.

I think it was Christmas time, he posted he was enjoying himself in Marbella getting some winter sun whilst we were stuck here and hardly allowed to see anybody and told not to go anywhere.

It transpired though that he’d posted the message from a local IP address. Granted I don’t get out much anymore, but I thought it was pretty funny.

On what happened today, I seem to remember we had a penalty given against us and our keeper was kicking mud of his boots on the post when the ref blew the whistle. Their player just kicked the ball into an effectively empty net. I am sure you will know what game that was. Pretty similar to today.

The other strange one I will never forget is Jenson being struck in the throat, easily could have been in serious trouble, think it was QPR were allowed to carry on until they scored. I think now the ref would be seriously criticised.

He did and before the ball entered the net. Therefore he was correct to disallow it.
My question is why did he blow the second time? What had he seen to make him blow again. If he can sensibly answer that question I might have some sympathy.

Correct - Gabor v Sheff Wed and referee apologised afterwards and said he'd got it wrong. It was Mathieson from Stockport.

No one has spotted any reason for him blowing a second time because nothing happened between the two whistles other than Lewis Dunk shooting. Two weeks running that West Brom have got away with a shocker of a decision.

How Lee Mason found the time to get from the Midlands down to Cardiff, get changed, put a wig on, perfect a " faux " French accent, and then go on to referee the England v Wales Six-Nations game is beyond me ....

There surely can't be two such incompetent Buffoons officiating in Elite Sport, surely ??

He’s from Bolton. He’s always hated us.

Years ago he use to be the ref that did pitch inspections for Ramsbottom United when required. Harry Williams at Rammy hated him. They would spend all morning getting the pitch “playable”. Mason would turn up, sign the Match postponed form and p1ss off. Going nowhere near the pitch. But pocketing is fee for “inspecting” the pitch.

In the interest of balance, a few thought Ajayi was hard done by with red against us (not me tbh) and the second penalty today was Lee Mason's attempt to compensate Brighton for his horlicks.

The only reason that I could think of is that his 1st whistle was before the keeper had completed setting his wall up, not that that is a legitimate reason I wouldn't have thought!

The second penalty that Welbeck missed was pretty dubious too.

Dunk claims he asked to take and Mason said yes.
Whatever the rights. or wrongs, of the decision, it was his incompetence that caused all the problems.
I've argued many times on here, that we hear from every man and his dog post match, why do officials get a free pass. They get paid by football as well. If only see the buggers squirm, as they try to justify the impossible. I also think it would make referees take that extra 5 secs, before making a call, in order to ensure they get it right.

I think he knows he got it terribly wrong-you could tell from his expression and body language. He then bought some time by going to the touch line screen. Have a feeling that whoever was inside in charge of VAR told him he had dropped a clanger and then told him to go to the touchline screen, and told him how to handle it

Surely, the main reason that Brighton lost is that 2 of their players failed to hit the target from 2 separate penalties.

Reckon the lather around this sums up what an impossible expectation is placed on refs. It's a completely confected injustice.

Pretty sure the way the rules are *applied* means Sam Johnstone was entitled to expect that the whistle wouldnt blow until he was ready. Mason presumably blew early, realised belatedly that Johnstone wasnt ready and therefore blew again to avoid him being responsible for an injustice.

The confusion that follows isnt great but thats VAR for you. At the end of the day what happened was that an opportunity that wouldnt normally be permitted, wasnt permitted. In a sensible world the ref apologises to the teams and everyone gets on sensibly. Case closed.

Of course the media need the story and blow it all up, and fans follow suit. And so the already diminished talent pool for refs probably get smaller, as a few more decide it's really not worth the hassle that goes with being an "Other" as refs seem to be these days.

I don’t think it will put folk off. Very well paid job and a place in the sky sports studio on retirement if you can make a name for yourself!

Just to change the subject slightly........
going back around 3 years or so??
Man City away, I think the ref was Graham Scott but not quite sure.

City were awarded a free kick just outside our box which they took very quickly even before the ref had blown. They scored from it and the Burnley players obviously protested, the ref then said that he didn't need to blow his whistle for the free kick to be taken.

Slightly different scenario I know but the rules are ambiguous at times. Some refs will allow quick free kicks and some refs give a yellow card to a player who takes a free kick before they have blown.

And then we have Mason who makes up his own rules as he goes!

Whilst I agree with the general sentiment, and the fact that the correct outcome was reached, the situation was totally of Lee Mason’s making. Why did he tell Dunk that he could take the free kick whilst the goalkeeper was lining up the wall?

I can remember a penalty awarded against us during Cotterill's reign. Our goal keeper was Giraly, who was messing around using delaying tactics away from the goal. AS he went towards the goal, the penalty taker put it in the net and the goal stood

I think, though happy to be corrected, that a free kick can be taken immediately unless the ref has to take action to prevent it (book or speak to a player, call a physio on, mark out a wall) and then blows the whistle to restart play when satisfied that everyone is ready for the kick to be take.

Not checking the keeper and wall were ready is the failing here. Even so, I'm not sure why he had to get VAR involved.
