Hi everyone and Merry Christmas to you and your respective families.

For a bit of nostalgia, please choose YOUR favourite Burnley game for each decade that you have been a Claret. I was an eighties child but first attended in 1991/92, so I will report for four decades. CT on the other hand, will have nine or ten selections ;)

You do not have to justify your selections. If you wish, you can also select one best miss.

Enjoy

90’s - Burnley 4-3 Stockport (1996)
00’s - QPR 2-4 Burnley (2008)
10’ - Burnley 3-1 Nottingham Forest (2014)

I have no idea of dates of past Burnley games but one of my favourites was v Chelsea and the 4-4 draw when we were fined for fielding 10 reserves because of the European Cup tie the following mid week
Teams like Manchester City and Liverpool now can field 2 top teams but in that era we could field 2 better teams than teams in this era

Strange ones, but for me was about the whole away day with Dads mates on mini buses as a kid for the early ones.

Oldham 28th April 98 - 3v3
Tried to copy that goal for the next 2 years at primary school

Scunthorpe promotion game 2000
On the pitch, still photos of me on my dads mates shoulders with my England bucket hat

Closely followed by Reading Away in play offs

Blackburn away 2014 - one of the best feelings in my life

60s. Clarets 2 Liverpool 1. They finished Champions, us third.
70s. Clarets 1 Celtic 0. Tinpot competition but beating them H & A was wonderful.
80s. Clarets 1 Liverpool 0. Milk Cup semi 2nd leg. If Mark Lawrenson hadn’t kicked one of the line? They were rattled.
90s. Clarets 2 Stockport 1. Our first victory at Wembley.
00s. Clarets 1 Man U 0. Back in the big time.
10s. Basturds 1 Clarets 2. Shackell’s face when he scored.
20s. Man U 0 Clarets 2. Not just the result but the performance.

60s The Cup Final: I drew The Clarets in a sweepstake with my schoolmates, and nearly won. I'd hardly heard of Burnley before that.
70s Spent that decade playing, followed the results but no stand-outs
80s the Orient game. Rekindled my interest in BFC.
90s. Plymouth away in the play-off semi final, and Super John Francis
00s Play-off final vs Sheffield Utd
10s Beating Blackburn
20s Early days, but at last we've beaten Arsenal

60s Burnley 5 Dirty Leeds 1 (When Ralph Coates sat on he ball in the centre circle inviting them to come and get it. Yes, we were so good).
70s. Has to be Champions to be Dirty Leeds 1 Burnley 4 in 1974, with Fletcher's "goal of the decade"
80s The Orient game
90s (Not so easy to pick) Probably the Wembley over our "big" rivals - Stockport.
00s 2009 Play off final victory over Sheff Utd
10s Finally winning at Ewood in 2014
20s Last seasons win at Old Trafford

70s August ‘75 Burnley 0 Arsenal 0 - my first ever game
80s 1982 Burnley 1 Chesterfield 1 - never forget that first promotion
90s 1992 Carlisle 1 Burnley 1 - not as good as it could have been but we were all but up and there was a great atmosphere
00s 2009 Burnley 1 Sheffield United 0 (play-off final) - the games I’d spent the last 30 odd years dreaming about
10s 2014 Blackburn 1 Burnley 2 - not the first time I’d seen us win at Ewood, but the best.
20s - the next game I attend, being back on the Turf will be an emotional day!

The win at OT was in the 20s (January this year) not the 10s!

Good thread though, for me;

90s: Derby 0-1 Burnley
2000s: Burnley 1-0 Sheff Utd
2010s Blackburn 1-2 Burnley
2020s Man United 0-2 Burnley

70's Beating QPR 3-0 at the Turf.......revenge.....Loved that team!

Missed the 80's and 90's wasn't living nr Burnley then came to the states. ( no info available back then except Union Jack monthly rag at the British pubs.

2000's Wembley vs Sheffield Utd 1-0

2010's Burnley 2-0 Wigan and that impossible promotion......The Ashley Barnes goal!....one of the best team goals i've ever seen us score. Rosler not shaking Dyche's hand & the subsequent pitch invasion with Dyche dragging people along on his back...Brilliant!

2020 Manure 0-2 Burnley & the fans chanting EASY ...we battered them!

I've been a Burnley fan since i was 8 when i first went on the Turf. I could never support any other team. These past few years have been fantastic!......Long may it continue.

2000s Brentford 2-3 Burnley (knew we were going up that day)
2010s Burnley 4-3 Preston

60s. Not sure of the year but my first match v Man U. A night match under the lights . The whole experience was fantastic. Hanging on to a barrier at the end so I wouldn’t get swept away by the leaving crowd and my dad finding me when the ground emptied.
70s. All the games in the cup run up to the semi against Newcastle. Convinced that we were going to win the cup that year. Still not forgiven super Mac.
80s Sorry but it’s the Orient game.
90s. The game against PNE when Bertie Bee took out the streaker who had written the score on his backside. Just because I had my kids with me and they thought it was brilliant. Think that was in the 90s
00s .Back in the big time v Man U and beating them.
2010s. The match against Middlesbrough. The noise when we scored.

80s PNE away Sherpa Van. Forever will be my favourite away game, realising that less than 12 months after Orient I would see my team at Wembley
90s Wembley v Stockport
00s Reading away play off
10s got to be the first win at BollEwood in 2014.
20s so far the 0-2 at Old Trafford

Memory not as it was Jdrobbo, must have forgot many but off the top of my head :
60s Burnley v Swindon league cup semi final, was on as a kid but can't even remember the score !

70s Celtic 1 Burnley 2, went up to Parkead for 2nd leg, Leighton James ripped their full back Danny Magrain to bits.

80s PNE 1 Burnley 3, sherpa semi final, nobbers thought they had done enough in 1st leg 😁

90s Carlisle or York away, take your pick.

00s Wembley v Sheff Utd.

10s Aberdeen away, back in Europe.
Great thread Jdrobbo and many happy memories watching the clarets. Merry Xmas.

Cheeky sod.

I've only just seen this thread and if I list mine then I'll probably come back half an hour later and change them. For now, I'm going for two in each decade, one at home and one away.

60s
Home: Manchester United 1960/61 (5-3). It was my first ever game and I could never have known how important being a Claret would be for me.
Away: Blackburn 1962/63 (3-2). My first Ewood Park win.

70s
Home: Sunderland 1972/73 (2-0). Magical, magical night as I saw us promoted back to the top flight with those two Fletcher goals.
Away: Preston 1972/73 (1-1). Incredible day, absolutely incredible.

80s
Home: Orient 1986/87 (2-1). Absolutely no explanation necessary.
Away: Tottenham 1982/83 (4-1). Dusty sacked on the morning of the game and then a result like that.

90s
Home: Plymouth 1997/98 (2-1). We didn't want to be going back to the place mentioned in the away game.
Away: York 1991/92 (2-1). At last, out of that dungeon called the fourth division.

00s
Home: Manchester United 2009/10 (1-0). Welcome to the Premier League.
Away: Reading 2008/09 (2-0). You're just a **** Neil Warnock.

10s
Home: Wigan 2013/14 (2-0). Relegation favourites my arse.
Away: Olympiacos 2019/20 (1-3). The only defeat I've chosen but I'll never ever forget the day I saw my team play in Europe.

20s
Home: Wolves 2020/21 (2-1). I think that's the best we've played at home this year although I was tempted with Bournemouth because of the fun.
Away: Manchester United 2019/20 (2-0). The day I'd waited over half a century for. I'll never forget it.

No reason for any of these but what pops out of my head

60s. 2.1 vs Everton 1962 my very first 1st team game. That win everyone thought would win the league. Soon learnt to never take anything for granted as a Burnley fan

70s Pne away 1973

80s Southend away 1982 4..1 and promotion

90s Wembley 1994 vs Stockport

Left England in 1996 so games attended are few and far between after that but have seen a few live since but although even though only on TV I've never been as emotional as 2009 play off final vs Sheffied Utd

Only seen one live in the 10s 1.1 vs Rovers 2013.

Lovely thread

90's Jan 93 Sheff Utd. 2 Burnley 2 FACup magic returned for one day. Incredible support.
00's Jan 2009 Burnley 3 Spurs 2 daring to dream? oh yes. So proud and shattered at the same time.
10's May 2014 Burnley 2 Wigan Ath. 0 An achievement beyond belief 10 months after I'd seen what was on offer pre-season in Ireland.

90s- Plymouth at home 2-1- Andy Cooke my favourite player in those days so was fitting he got both goals.

00s- Chelsea away just the whole day and then to win on pens was a bonus.

10s- Has to be 2-1 at Rovers (Ings Winner) but special mention for 3-2 at home to palace Barnes at the death.

20s- United away

So many people have chosen the Orient game. As one of their favourites? Really? For me it was a symbol of how low we had fallen and I am not old enough to remember the glory days of the 60s like some. Yes it was the turning point, but all I can remember is dread and fear all week in the run up and relief afterwards that we still had a league team to support. A horrible time that I don't look back on with any fondness whatsoever.

66/67 Burnley v WHU 4-2. My favourite Clarets performance and Willie Morgan ran our WC captain ragged.
March '74-Burnley v Newcastle 0-2. High expectation but alas the game that left me most disappointed.
86/87 Burnley v Orient 2-1 Any true Claret would be hard pressed to leave our most important match out. As a ps...I'd like to say that Trevor Stevens performance v Altrincham in the FAC earlier in the decade was special and that game sticks in my mind.
97/98-Burnley v Plymouth 2-1. Last day survival, massive crowd and I believe the game that started our steady rise back to the top.
25/5/09- Burnley v Sheff Utd 1-0.
19/4/16- Burnley v Middlesbrough 1-1 For personal reasons but the best atmosphere inside TM since the 2 new stands were erected.
22/1/20- Man Utd v Burnley 0-2. I'd waited a life time for a result like that at OT and in all honesty it seems like a life time since.

Recall that fondly, too. Prior to the game their team had been chirping away( we weren't 'breaking any pots' league wise despite the fact we went up as champions four months later) but they met Burnley that night on top of their game with, as you say, Trevor Steven orchestrating everything. 6-1 was a deserved scoreline and I still believe a catalyst to lift and continue the recent improvement in league form.

Haven't attended many BFC games down the years mainly due to moving north, and life getting in the way, so some of these will be off the telly I'm afraid.

80's SVT final, this one I did attend, and although I was still a nipper the atmosphere, both on the trip down and back, and at Wembley itself was electric, in the old days of terracing we managed to get right to the front, and if only Paul Comstive's? header had been an inch or two lower than we'd have had a bird's eye view of a Burnley goal at Wembley, small margins as Sean would say, it's easy to say in hindsight, but you sensed that both clubs involved that day would experience better fortune's in the future, and so it's proved, although we've both had our up's and downs to ultimately get to where we are now. 80,000 people attending a match between 2 Division 4 teams showed that both were sleeping giants.

90's I only attended one Burnley game during this decade as we moved to Scotland shortly afterwards, so it'll have to be that one.

Torquay a 1-1 draw 6 April 1991, we went behind in the 1st half from memory, and needed a Rocket Ron penalty to salvage a draw, sadly the Gulls had the last laugh that season, as they dumped out of the play-offs, before beating Blackpool on pens in the final.

00's This decade is tough, not very original but it's gotta be 2009 PO final, mainly because of the importance to the club, however I have to confess I didn't watch the game live, it was a bank holiday and I'd been offered double time to work, so sadly I worked, bizarrely I wasn't worried about us not winning, we'd already beaten them twice in the league that season, and it was one of those times you felt the fates were with us, the semi-final with Reading we'd been toiling until Bikey's moment of recklessness turned the tie, and we could play another 100 years and not score 2 stunners like the ones Paterson and Thommo scored in the space of 7 minutes.

10's This is much easier has to be the 2 friendlies at Ibrox I attended, the noise was mad, and to stuff them twice made it much easier to mock the Scottish game, the 2nd one was particularly sweet when Andre banged a HT past them, and didn't Scotty bag in the first, these 2 victories allied to the Aberdeen and Celtic games, plus other friendlies means that we're still unbeaten against Scottish opposition I believe, not a bad record to have.

20's Hmm! I guess it's gotta be the 2-0 at OT, although the win at Arsenal runs it close.

Memorable for various personal reasons...
60s: v Sheff Utd Oct '65 - first ever game.
70s: 2-1 win at Blackpool Boxing Day 72.
80s: supercharged emotion of May 9th 87, surviving that Orient game.
90s: Champions at York 92.
00s: Promotion at Wembley 09, it was worth flying back for.
Not been back to England for several years now, so have to choose games I was not at for 10s and 20:
10s: Winning at Ewood 14

Mostly based on games I was at:

80s: The Orient Game - 1987
90s: Derby 0 Burnley 1 - 1999
00s: Burnley 1 Sheffield United 0 - 2009
10s: Burnley 2 Wigan 0 - 2014
20s: Manchester United 0 Burnley 2 - 2020

Great choices Ashton and yet I only chose two of those myself, but could so easily have chosen all of them, especially the Newcastle game in '74 from which I still suffer PTSD.

I find it hard to distinguish individual games, and living down south it was mostly away games. And then living abroad for a long time.

From the 60s I remember us beating QPR 2-0 at Loftus Road when we were having that great run of wins. Tommy Docherty had just taken over as their manager, and Ralph Coates was brilliant.
The match I particularly remember from the 90s was beating Mansfield 3-2, pure excitement from beginning to end.
From 00s it has to be 1-0 against Sheffield Utd at Wembley.

What a cracking thread. I made my choices and then saw others and wondered why I hadn’t picked them.
