Oakwell away
What I’d do to be travelling in a clapped out minibus en route to Barnsley for a mid table championship Boxing Day special. Stopping every ten minutes for **** stops and stocking up on more cans. Half the bus smoking even though it’s not allowed and half the bus don’t even want to breathe it in.
Getting off at Oakwell. Freezing and 6,000 new coats and old Santa hats wet through. Drab first half and a burnt mouth from two molten pies that have been cooking since the last game. Full time can’t arrive quick enough. 0 shots on target. And a 2-0 defeat with both goals from a 33 year old journeyman in front of 11,226, half of which are Burnley fans.
Shouting at the radio all the way home as Talksport mocks us - only we can do that. Before doing it all again at home to Rotherham on New Year’s Day.

Re: Oakwell away
With all due respect cricketfieldclarets I can't think of anything worse.
Re: Oakwell away
...and then arriving home to read the message board, and seeing post after post enquiring if our players were still p1ssed from Christmas Day.
You've really have just painted the most amazing picture, CFC. Words can't describe how much I miss it.

Thought the same this morning! Would have loved to be heading to Spoons for a fryup before piling onto a minibus with a bag of beers. Leeds would have been a great day out as well!

Re: Oakwell away
I thought this was going to be a thread about our Boxing Day win in 2010, we went to Oakwell and notched a rare away victory, just days later we'd crashed at home to Scunthorpe, and Laws was shown the door.

You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.
It’s the build up. The company. The journey. The post match talk. The match and result was often immaterial.

Couldn’t agree more CF. Fantastic memories.
From the away end at Oakwell, you can see the away coaches on the hill.
It was the 1-0 defeat under Stan and I remember hoards of Burnley fans still pouring in after kick off.
I miss our away support. It was proper back in the day.

Definitely don't have fond memories of Boxing Day 2015? Battled through the floods to finally get to Hull about 3.30 before losing 3 nil and barely managing a shot. But after losing that game we never looked back!

A pint in a plastic glass at the Metrodome next door. And a 1 hour queue afterwards for anyone who parked on there. Walk down that hill by the away coaches with every back wheel used as a urinal... Now you’ve got me wishing I was there. Didn’t realise what we had, going to Barnsley away.

Re: Oakwell away
Wasn't that in 2000 or 2001? (Could be wrong on that)
Think I went to that one. Stan was getting some right grief from the fans for leaving somebody on the bench whom the fans wanted to see playing., but can't remember who that was.
Re: Oakwell away
Think it was 2000, and it may have been Glen Little who was left on the bench. Can't believe it was 20 years ago!ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 2:01 pmWasn't that in 2000 or 2001? (Could be wrong on that)

Has to be up there with one of our best ever away following's.
Re: Oakwell away
I agree about our away support, its really declined in recent years. Pay on the gate definetely helped, but it can't be the only reason.TsarBomba wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 1:52 pmCouldn’t agree more CF. Fantastic memories.

Immediately Boxing Day at Brighton springs to mind. The Goldstone ground... snowing got battered 3-0 and arrived home half an hour after last orders.... altogether a Boxing Day beyond forgetting.

Been to some rotten Christmas fixtures away to Rotherham and Barnsley over the last 40 years.
We always seemed to get beat or you arrived and the match was postponed

Yeah, that was Rotherham wasn’t it?Top Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 4:20 pmBeen to some rotten Christmas fixtures away to Rotherham and Barnsley over the last 40 years.

Got all the way there to be told it was off!
The worst postponement by far was Watford. Everyone in the ground and Watford had no intention of playing the game. No effort to clear the pitch or put it back 30 mins.

I got a call saying 'Don't come home, we're flooded' and ended up staying the night in Hull.
That was a very bad day.

The "journey" from Hull (away) to Charlton (away) was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed in football, in every sense!!

I'm not sure I've seen us play a worse away game in the Championship than that day in Hull.
I really did think the season was finished.

Oakwell March 1995, Kevin Lynch, 9 men, Payton scores but not for us, the biggest travesty of refereeing I've seen. The evening started fine with a few pints in the home fans clubhouse but it was downhill from thereon.

Throw Colne Clarets' broken down bus into the mix and it was a hell of a lot worse.elwaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 4:14 pmImmediately Boxing Day at Brighton springs to mind. Re: Oakwell away
We've had quite a few Boxing Day games postponed over the years. I'm sure I've set off to Chestetfield, Derby, Rotherham, Oldham and Blackpool (possibly more than once) but the games were postponed all on Boxing Days.Top Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 4:20 pmBeen to some rotten Christmas fixtures away to Rotherham and Barnsley over the last 40 years.

Re: Oakwell away
Boxing Day. We arrived in the pub at Rotherham, The Tivoli, right next to the old ground. The landlord let me buy a round of about 8 drinks, kindly put them on a tray, and then told me the game had been called off five minutes ago.

Re: Oakwell away
I still have nightmares of the Boxing Day 1999 fixture away at Bury. Going well in the league, Burnley fans taking up 2 of the 4 stands at Gigg Lane and Bury pasting us and 4-0 down at HT. To add insult to injury we ended up leaving early and missed our 2 late goals!

That was a horrible afternoon at Hull back in the 90s I was sat in the stand and still got soaked god help those on the terrace behind the goal. Got back to the car and I had a puncture. I think we won though so it was a decent day all roundJimmymaccer wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 10:08 pmAgain can’t remember whether Cc Or AC away (and both deserve every credit for what they do),,,,,,Hull away at their old ground, freezin, driving rain and shocker.........

Re: Oakwell away
We had each stand behind the goal, and also half of the main stand where I was. Dreadful performance.gandhisflipflop wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 9:43 pmI still have nightmares of the Boxing Day 1999 fixture away at Bury. Remember it well. Paul Stewart got sent off to a torrent of abuse from the Burnley fans, and flicked us the 'V' in response.kritichris wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 8:09 pmOakwell March 1995, Kevin Lynch, 9 men, Payton scores but not for us, the biggest travesty of refereeing I've seen. Wasn’t Boxing Day but the worse postponement has to be reading away.
