Next 6 League games

Post by CaptainKirk » Sun Jan 03, 2021 10:57 am

Bit bored so looking ahead.
I know games are played on grass and not in my head but each time I picture each of those games I see a defeat.
Zero points out of the next 18 available would be a sobering prospect.
Let's hope they can surprise us and sneak a couple of draws to keep the points total ticking over until the following batch of games which look a lot more promising.

When we have these threads, very few seem to be correct, as we pick up points against teams we wouldn't expect (see Wolves and Arsenal), yet lose or draw games most of us would predict us winning (see WBA).

One game at a time.

A very lazy attempt, and even early on a sunday I'd be surprised if you caught any.

Even those half asleep wont fall for that.

Edit - too late...

For context:

Man U (H)
West Ham (A)
Liverpool (A)
Villa (H)
Chelsea (A)
Man City (H)

I can see us picking up 4 points from those and the next 3 games after that are Brighton, Palace & West Brom.

Actually just looked at the fixtures and you might not be far off. 3/4 points would be a good return on the next 6 league games

It was definately not a fishing attempt. Just look at those games. I did end by saying they might hopefully sneak a couple of draws (maybe WH away and Villa home).
Hopefully, they will win all six.
Duffer - I did say that the next batch looked a lot more winnable. We might just have to keep calm on here as we go through the likely sequence coming up.

I’d be pleased with that, from such a run. It wouldn’t at all surprise me if we got a couple more though.

Think those same fixtures yielded 4 points last season with a draw away at Liverpool and win away at West Ham. Rest were defeats.

That’s a tough run, but if Fulham continue at their current trajectory we would still be above the bottom three if we lost all 6, and that’s very unlikely.

I would have liked the Fulham game to have gone ahead because putting that extra 3 points between us and them would have given us a massive amount of breathing space.

Certainly a tough set of fixtures. 4 points would be ok and say 6 points good.

I’m well aware of that. What is it with people on here trying to look for arguments where they don’t exist?

With the current form of both sides, and our good home record, we were favourites to win the game. And I would rather have taken our momentum into that game than be saddled with another game in hand which could be played when both sides are in contrasting form.

“What is it with people on here trying to look for arguments where they don’t exist”? Maybe people aren’t maybe people simply don’t agree & wish to debate in a sensible & reasonable manner & you can’t or refuse to see that, the Fulham game should allow us to get more injured players back on the grass despite us having that momentum, Fulham right now for us with all things considered are a banana skin & I think it’s beneficial to wait & play them at a later point, that’s not me deliberately finding arguments that’s me simply offering an alternative viewpoint different to yours.

Lets hope that the season is completed in full. The nightmare scenario would be some sort of points per game calculation with the season ending just at the end of those next six fixtures...

Completely agree, it’s a dangerous time to be playing them there had a good home draw against Southampton & are improving the Tottenham away they wouldn’t have fancied but I could have seen them getting something.

Of course it doesn’t but why would we not want to be playing a team currently sat below us at a point in the season when we are by some distance in our best spell of form ?......and at home too.

The plus side is of course we get some extra rest and time for injuries to clear up.

If Fulham players have been in breach of Covid rules we should have just been awarded the game 3-0. There is a complete lack of deterrent for these idiots to just get away with it. If that were Burnley players I’d feel exactly the same. The thing that you would think would hurt players is the fury of their own fans and team mates that they have cost the club points. I’d also ban them from playing for 3 months minimum. Fining them is largely useless with the 2 week maximum fine they seem to have as a rule - but you may aswell fine them as much as you are allowed to.
But the club in breach should also have to compensate the TV companies for the costs of losing the fixture.

7 points wins against Villa and West Ham and draw against Man U. Not sure we'll get anyhting from the other 3 as we never seem to get anything from them.

My reasons would be
(1) it will be the same scenario when we eventually do play them
(2) costa, jones and lingard will have settled in By the time it’s rearranged

I’m not sure that awarding a win to the opposing team is a fair course of action personally. We would feel pretty robbed if Fulham for example got a 3-0 win against Liverpool because some of their players test positive.

Furthermore, the timing of the tests will dictate how many games are rearranged. I don’t know how long the isolation periods are, but it is possible that in a 10 day period a team may have 3 games cancelled. This would make the league a total farce.

A fair way, in my opinion, would be to reschedule the game but not allow players to play who have been found to be in breach of the Covid rules. It would be totally unfair for example to punish a player who has tested positive because their wife contracted the virus in hospital, or their child contract it in school.

It’s crazy to suggest Fulham would have been there for the taking, we needed a break we put a poor Sheffield united to the sword & did we had to do but it was laboured performance & far from convincing we was due to hit the skids & coming up against a fresh improving Fulham buoyed by a credible home draw against a flying Southampton side, come on...

I’m only talking about awarding games where the clubs players have been found to breach the rules and this has led to a cancellation of the game. Firstly it would probably mean that these teams would consider not cancelling the game if they knew they would have to forfeit the game. And secondly and more importantly it’s a real deterrent.

I am not advocating this when clubs have an outbreak which has not been caused by players breaching the rules. That would be totally unreasonable and unfair.

I suppose the problem is that we will never be sure how the virus has spread through a team. And you can just imagine some clubs seeking the services of private investigators in the hope of exposing footballers who will flout the rules. Might sound far fetched but it opens up a can of worms.

I also think it’s unfair to punish an entire club for what could just be the reckless actions of a single player who may be on his way out of the club in the next transfer window.

To try and bring this thread back to the topic, I can see points in our next 6, we have finally found our strong jaw again, and we're now keeping clean sheets once more.

Man U (H) - I don't expect anything here, United have found their stride and they'll have too much for us. (0)
West Ham (A) - We can definitely get something down there, remember we've won at the London Stadium twice in recent seasons, so I certainly don't fear a trip there, I think we'll take at least a point. (1)
Liverpool (A) - Tough on paper, but we took a point there last season, and if West Brom can nick a draw there then why can't we. I'll play safe and predict a narrow loss. (0)
Villa (H) - This is definitely a winnable game, they have talent, but their form is erratic, let's hope we get them on one of their off days. (3)
Chelsea (A) - Hard to see us getting anything here. but like Villa they can blow hot and cold. (0)
Man City (H) - Again it's not a fixture you'd be expecting anything from, and sadly you'll probably be right. (0)

I've tried to be objective in those calls, who knows maybe we can spring a surprise or two, it wouldn't be the first time, but 4 point from that tough block wouldn't be the end of the world, and it'd take us to the 20 point mark, with hopefully a fair number of winnable games to come, and we've shown plenty of times in this division that we can win the crunch games when we need to.

Apart from the "string" jaw, you're probably right but I've a feeling we'll do better than expected in these games. I'm going for 9 points.

So, I think you have us down for 4 points from the 6 games.
Problem we have is, Villa have won five times away from home this season which is very impressive.
This is why I ended up with not a lot.
Still, you never know, sometimes when I think back I can see results against all those teams - that's the beauty of football.

I think both Fulham and Brighton have difficult games over
the next 6 games so for me it's one game at a time.

As long as we either match or better their results
then we'll still be above them.

it's as simple as that.

So people are predicting 4 losses or more out of 6 games when we lost 2 of the last 9 (one to Man City and one to the referee). I just love the optimism on here....

One game at a time...all winnable

Absolutely no need to worry about Brighton, Fulham or anyone else....our results are the only ones that matter...as always

Of course it looks daunting, but at a similar time last year, having just been battered by Chelsea, we weren’t too confident about up-coming games against Leicester, Man U and Arsenal. That didn’t turn out too bad. You just never know.

In the same way that no one should assume we will beat Fulham, no one should assume we will lose any of the next 6 fixtures. As Dyche would say, where does it say in the rules that we cannot win.

Not seen anything to change my earlier view.
If anything, I am even more pessimistic now than I was then.
I used to take exception to the comments aimed at us by fans of other teams but cannot really argue with it these days.
Getting a bit depressing watching the same turgid, predictable hoofball every match. This coming from a self confessed happy clapper.

Prediction for end of season is 31 points. Not sure that will be enough (is that amount ever enough)?

Yes. I was optimistic for once, but I have no optimism left.
Didn't bother watching today, and I'm glad I didn't.
TBH I'm sick of the Americans (already) and Dyche.

It's difficult to feel optimistic about our next 6 games.
We've already lost the first two and can't see us picking up much,
if anything from the next four by which time we could be in the bottom three again.

Feel a little sorry for Wood and Barnes as they are both struggling
but Dyche will stick with them no doubt in the hope that they come good.
Albeit he did bring on both Vydra and Jayrod today earlier than he has in the past
and there were a few signs from Vydra.

U think we definitely need some fresh blood both in midfield and up front.

The encouraging aspect is that we're competitive in every game pretty much, so I don't fear us being canned 3/4-0 every week, however until we can start finding goals from somewhere, we'll struggle to win enough games, as good as our defence is we can't expect them to keep a clean sheet every week, whether changing the strikers would make a difference IDK, but clearly something has to change, because as it stands we're just keeping our heads above water, with 3/4 difficult games on the horizon, and apart from set-pieces it's hard too see where our next goal is coming from.

Am I panicking no, am I concerned definitely, because if you can't score goals often enough, you're not going to win games at any level, never mind in the PL.

We're nor creating enough chances/shots (26 in the last 3 games)
and much worse in terms of on target (5 in total).
Those have to be worrying and certainly not good enough to win you
games and/or get you a draw.

Funnily enough, I think we’ll get a result against Liverpool
