Actually Ric_c you are right. He did play for us on loan. I'd completely forgotten that!

Wow! Didn't realise they had it over us so much.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 3:26 pmI can't recall the player's name but Jakubs Tash is definitely right about Peterborough being a bogey team. We beat them 4-1 in April 1991 and it was the first time we'd ever beaten them. We lost in the League Cup in 1966 but then went 11 league games without a win against them from 1985 up to that game in 1991.

Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
There was a time whenever any opposing player had the ball I feared the worst.
I always seemed to note, down the years, if the opposition had an ex-Rover or one on loan from them, they'd do well.
Wayne Gill on loan at Blackpool was one of those moments.

I think it maybe the blonde winger that they signed from York City
McCarthy or something similar , although if it was over 15 years then it maybe Devlin then
Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Yes he did - he was on loan to us.
I remember thinking what a great signing he was as he used to be brilliant against us for North End. But I think by the time he came to us he has started picking up injuries.
In the semi final of the Sherpa Van he was the best player across the 2 teams by a distance.

I remember a Birmingham winger having a blinder in the midweek milk cup tie in 1983. Ian Handysides. They came back from 2-0 to pull level then we won 3-2. The season we reached the semi finals.

PNE late 90s & in the 00s.
Alexander & Healy and the central defender whose name evades me, always had me nervous.
EDIT: was it Gregan?

Sean Goater and Fat Boy Parkin always scored against us
Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Gregan always seemed to be well up for it against us. I remember him playing mainly in centre mid though.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 5:03 pmPNE late 90s & in the 00s.

Remember Brett Angell having a few good games against us as well. Agree with a lot of those already mentioned.

Ronnie Jepson. How many different teams did he score for against us? Exeter, Huddersfield, Bury, Preston. Port Vale?
Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Yeah, but if its the game i'm thinking of they went onto beat us 3 nil at the Turf. The year they won the league and we nicked second on the last day.

Always thought he was a really good player, he tore Liverpool to bits in a Cup game once, when they were still in the 2nd tier.

Glad someone mentioned Billy Whitehurst, how tough was he? Trevor Hockey always gave us trouble and seem to recall Harford and Hobson giving us problems.

John Mcginley.
Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Used to hate Jason Roberts. His arms were all over the place, as if he was playing rugby, then the slightest touch sent him tumbling. Refs used to fall for it every week as well
Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Some cracking names in this thread.
Darren Huckerby scared the life out of me! David Healy sticks in my mind too.
Oh and Ricardo Fuller - played like prime Ronaldo against us.

Back in the fourth division days, the players I really feared would spoil the day were wearing claret and blue.

Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
Peterborough were a real bogey side. They gave us some real thumpings at their place. I was there for a 5-0 in 88 i think? They had a left winger called Craig Goldsmith..tall, blonde hair and he terrorised Peter Daniel. Tore him a new one that day. Remember a 4-1 defeat there too not long after. We didn't perform much better at home to them either. Worrell Sterling another of their players that we made look like Messi.Jakubs Tash wrote: ↑Tue Jan 05, 2021 1:45 pmPeterborough seemed to be a bogey team for a while in the late 80s/early 90s and they had a full back (Blake?) who seemed to terrorise us. My memory may be playing tricks though...

David Currie at Darlington was always too good for us. Though I suspect it wasn't actually all that many games because his career seemed to fizzle out.

Re: When we were crap - players you feared.
I don't think he was very prolific but some names just showed up on Teletext far too often. I remember fearing Barnard at Barnsley who if I remember right was a free kick specialist. Roberts at Norwich was another player I remember being scared of us facing.
But yeah, nothing as bad as Shaun Goater, but Burnley won't have been the only ones fearing him.
