Your favourite FA Cup tie

I was asked this question in a Q&A I did for someone at MK last week.

Of all the FA Cup matches you have been to, which has been your favourite and why?

Mine would be the 2-2 draw away to Sheffield in the 90s. The ending was disappointing but at the time it was exciting to see us go in front against top flight opposition and the atmosphere in the away end was fantastic (despite the crush)

The 1-1 Fulham away draw at Loftus Road. Coventry was my first (3-0) FA Cup away day I think. Fulham was brilliant though.

“DI A DI A DIALLO DIALLO DIALLO DI A DI A DIALLO, DRISSA DIALLO”

Good times.

As mentioned above the Sheff Utd one was good, another stand out for me was the replay at Shrewsbury the round before.

Proper goal celebrations, winning from 1-0 down with 2 very late goals scored at our end.

Derby away in 99 by some distance - first really "unexpected" win I can remember. Great day.

The Liverpool one with the Traore own goal deserves a mention though

I was going to say Derby away, but 1991/92. The atmosphere was electric

"JIMMY MULLEN'S CLARET AND BLUE ARMY!"

"WE WANT JIMMY! WE WANT JIMMY!"

Then there's the full page dedicated to it in The Sun.

Proud.

I think that the away match at SUFC was one of my favourites closely followed by the 3-0 home demolition of Wolves, when Dobbo scored a superb header late on.

A toss up between

Sheffield United away in 1992/93
Derby away in 1999/00

The thing is, when your join before round three, the FA Cup is brilliant after the big boys come in.

The 3-0 replay win against Fulham (Diallo) was a good evening.

Mine is possibly the Derby away game in ‘92. You know the one.

1. Derby away (‘92). The home game wasn’t bad either.
2. Bolton home (‘87) - so intense, and my first FA cup game. It felt so special.
3. Man City home (‘91) - seeing 20,000+ on the Turf, plus Colin Hendry playing to the crowd.
4. Shrewsbury away (‘93?) - John Bond. Terrible game. Penalty save. Late winner.
5. Liverpool (‘95) home and replay. It felt amazing to have drawn them.

And weren't we down to 10 men.

As for favourite cup-tie, I'm opting for a memory as opposed to a victory. Quite a number to choose from but I'll go back to 1963 and a 4th round home tie v Liverpool after having seen off holders, Spurs, 0-3 at a snow bound White Hart Lane with a midweek afternoon kick off.
I was only 11 but as I've mentioned before on here it was the first time I'd heard noise like that generated from the huge following from Merseyside. Pay at the gate so no segregation and just around 50,000 attended. 1-1 at full time, Kevin Lewis put them ahead and John Connelly equalised in the second half. 12 months later Kevin Lewis missed a penalty in the 5 th round of the FA Cup for Huddersfield in a 3-0 victory for us.

I was wondering if anyone would come up with the one I did so well done matttheclaret - the 1-0 win at Derby in 1999 which was the first time we ever beat a Premier League club. Brilliant day out too with the Father Christmas hats.

Not a famous game really, but beating Stoke 2-0 in 1990. I'm pretty sure it was the first time I'd seen us beat a team from a higher division, seemed like a big deal on the night. That got us the big tie with City, which naturally we lost.

The home 0-0 with Liverpool. Both teams went on to be Champions. Colin Waldron’s wonderful volley could have won it for us. Although we lost 3-0 I enjoyed the replay, we gave them a game.

Also The 3rd round against West Ham at Turf Moor. The Long side was lively 67/68...and the much mentioned Chelsea replay under the Lights. Those days will sadly never return. Great atmospheres.

Very close to 48 years to the day I would think. Came back from London on the all night bus for that one and then stayed for the replay. Still managed to pass my exams. ;)

Burnley v Wrexham, 6th round, 1974. Just looked it up and the attendance that day was 35,500. Has there been a higher one since then?

Following Wednesday played at Chelsea. Attendance 8.171.

The Chelsea game was played on a midweek afternoon though because of the three day week - Micky Finn in goal and met Bill Shankly on the train on the way down.

Some great mentions on here. The FA cup is brilliant isn't it?

Seems our new chairman loves the history of the FA cup. Lets hope he wants to win it as badly as I do.

Oldham away in 1974. a great atmosphere, even though we'd been sold tickets for the Oldham end, presumably by mistake.

Taffy ran riot from the first minute and we ran out 4-1 winners.

The '74 Wrexham game had a superb atmosphere.
But that Derby tie and 'Jimmy Mullens C & B army' always comes to mind when cup ties are mentioned.

The 2 derby ones especially the first one in the fog, which was my first FA cup game and possibly away game.
For nostalgia, I remember the excitement of going to Coventry's Highfield Rd. We were easily beaten but it was special to visit there.

Penrith, not seen many wins like that. Even though I had a minor car crash on the way and had to complete the journey by train, and i dont know if you can count almost being crushed to death at the 74 semi final as a favourite

Agree with this one and also the 2-2 Derby at home cup tie before of course the unforgettable replay and then rearranged replay!

Had he heard of the Longside, Burnley? :D

Penrith 0-9 Burnley. Doubt I will ever see a score like that again.

There's quite a few and it's really hard.
The Shrewsbury replay away as mentioned above really was bloody brilliant to come back from a goal down and a man sent off and win it at the death and it should be remembered that winning that tie allowed us to then go to Bramhall Lane in the next round for the one so many people have sited and remember. The Rovers 5th round tie ('04?) was amazing home and away, despite losing so unluckily at their's and I actually went to all 3 Derby County matches in '92, including the fogged off one which is memorable in itself for all the wrong reasons  and the one on '99 when we won which really was fantastic. Ultimately i'd have to say beating Liverpool on The Turf with that hilarious own goal comes out on top and will always take some beating!! (I'm Googling it as I write just to have another chuckle!!!)

Newcastle at Hillsborough in the 1974 semi final was definitely the most excited I have ever been at a football game. The whole build up after the draw had been made, making a banner, being so excited in the morning that I threw up, the journey to Sheffield on the train, arriving at Midland Station in Sheffield, reaching near delirium on the the bus to the ground, absolutely certain that we were on our way to the FA Cup final at Wembley....
Oh how things went downhill once those goals went in. Macdonald, Macdonald...I’d walk a mile and a bit.....

For me I enjoyed Penrith away, 9-0 to the clarets, the ladies coming round with a tea trolley full of pies, the ball being kicked out of the stadium ( if you can call it that) old school ground! Went up there with a good friend I haven’t seen for years. Trouble was most of the pubs were shut, cuz season before they’d had a bit of bother with clarets travelling up to Carlisle

Ah! I wondered if anybody would mention Penrith, that 9-0 equalled our highest every victory, though I somehow doubt anybody on this board will have seen the others, Darwen in the 1891–92 Football League. Crystal Palace (1908–09), New Brighton (1956–57) The latter 2 both coming in the FA Cup.
