A fantastic result. The Villa Park bogey laid to rest. I was concerned that our 'midfield general', Dougie Collins, would be missing but Billy Ingham stepped up admirably. So many good players gelling at the same time.
Just looking at their line-up and is that the same Alun Evans Liverpool signed from Wolves in the late 60's?

They'd some good players in that side had Villa but we were simply outstanding that afternoon. Incredible performance from us and when you start looking at the league table we had all but pushed them all out of the way apart from QPR in what was the last ever season when only two went up.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 2:45 pmA fantastic result. We're Burnley fans, brought up on not getting carried away, but as early as the first game of the calendar year I think we all knew where we were heading.

Yes, as you say, it was just relentless over quite a number of games by now. My student mates were constantly telling me that 'we were up' and 'couldn't possibly throw it away now' but it really wasn't that long ago that as a young boy stood with my dad on the Turf I'd watched him grow more and more frustrated as we failed to gain the points that seemed to be there for the taking in the 1961 league run-in. So, my celebrations were still definitely on ice through the rest of winter and early spring.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 2:55 pmThey'd some good players in that side had Villa but we were simply outstanding that afternoon. The night before the game I caught the bus to Bacup to see my then girlfriend. Must have been the 7pm one. There was me and one other person on the bus, Leighton James. He was going to see his girlfriend. We got talking and I told him I was going to Villa park to see the game, but said it was going to be a tough game.
He almost exploded, saying Villa weren't a good side and we would win easily.
Can you imagine that nowadays, him going out the night before such a big game.
It was a bit hairy after the game but what a result.

Superb read as always, it's a cracking feature this one - especially given what we were doing on the field in what was my first year as a season ticket holder, albeit too young to really appreciate just how special a time this was.
Just out of curiosity, are the players wearing black armbands for this game? It certainly looks like Newton, Nulty, Dobson and the Villa man next to no.8 in the first picture are. There's no mention of anything in the piece and I've just looked at late 1972/early 1973 in the Rothman's Football Yearbook and there are no significant football related deaths listed.

I'd just imagined that you were born in 73 so you were either very young getting a season ticket or the 73 doesn't relate to your birth.cricketfield73 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:25 pmSuperb read as always, it's a cracking feature this one - especially given what we were doing on the field in what was my first year as a season ticket holder, albeit too young to really appreciate just how special a time this was.

I'm not aware of a death to be honest, nothing in the local press about it, but they are wearing black armbands. It could have been someone connected to Villa I suppose.

Interesting CT you chose that game. For me one of the most memorable games for me in supporting Burnley. Was living in London and got the train down.It was bitterly cold. We were superb and for me the best I ever saw Dobbo play, and he played quite a few good gamesClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 2:55 pmThey'd some good players in that side had Villa but we were simply outstanding that afternoon. I was 9 at the time, so still very much in complete awe of things like meeting Frank Casper at Junior Clarets, the first time in my life I ever met a real life 'superstar'. Apart from the immaculate jet black hair and sideburns, I was astonished at how deceptively big he was but my one abiding memory was that he wore a green tracksuit. I can picture it now - Alan Stevenson's shirt colour of green. In fact we had a thing about green at that time, the crush barriers, the doors and walls were all green!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:30 pmI'd just imagined that you were born in 73 so you were either very young getting a season ticket or the 73 doesn't relate to your birth.

The whole ground was green - 9 you say, next week's report comes the day after my 21st.cricketfield73 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 7:48 pmI was 9 at the time, so still very much in complete awe of things like meeting Frank Casper at Junior Clarets, the first time in my life I ever met a real life 'superstar'. People complain about refs nowadays, but some of the bookings Doug Collins received to reach his suspension were farcical.

I was on the game, brilliant display. They couldn't handle Taffy and yes, he could easily have had a couple.
Keith Newton, majestic player.

I spoke to an Evertonian recently who is writing a feature on Keith Newton. The first thing I said to him was that if you want anything negative then you are speaking to the wrong person. Terrific footballer and a terrific person too. So sad that he left us while in his 50s.ElectroClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:42 pmI was on the game, brilliant display. I well remember this great day. Amazing performance.
A sad footnote: I instantly recognised John Robson from the matchday programme you show here. He was diagnosed with MS in 1978 and died penniless in 2004.
