Goals

Post by Bordeauxclaret » Sat Jan 09, 2021 5:59 pm

Glad we scraped through today but again we struggled to put the ball in the net.

Since we put three past Bournemouth last February I make we’ve scored 23 goals in 30 games.
Scoring more than once only four times, once against a Championship side and once against a relegated team with 9 men.

I realise we are not a team who have ever scored boat loads at this level but it’s something that needs addressing as we can’t keep relying on our keeper and back four to deliver.

Just read on Twitter than Derby have the worst record for goals scored in the Premier League era with 20 in the infamous 2007-08 season.

We are currently on course for 22.

you'll get people defending it, 'what does it matter if we stay up' etc

Simple fact is that if our defence isn't at 100% or we lose one of our CBs to injury, we will really struggle as we don't score enough goals.

As it happens I expect we will score quite a few more than 22 this season

I’m confident we’ll find a way to turn it around as well but it’s certainly a big problem.
In general we don’t score all that many at this level, I’m not sure what our highest total is.

It’s a really difficult situation, our team is built around our strikers scoring the majority of our goals. When they aren’t scoring there is no one else in the team that can contribute.

We desperately need to add goals from midfield, not sure if that means changing our shape a little. At times this season we have effectively played a 6-2-2 formation. We might have to start leaving one of our wide players further up the pitch

There was also a stat shown during last nights game that Burnley are the worst in the PL when it comes to scoring goals in the last 20 minutes of games?

If true, it shows that the Dyche tactic of replacing strikers during the final 15/10 minutes of matches to grab a goal is largely ineffective.

Aye, we're doing alright at the moment but it makes you think. One of those two gets injured and we're more than likely gone.

Irrespective of how much each team cost to assemble the fact remains that they had 13 shots (11 on target) whilst we had 7 shots (none on target). It is alright saying that on another night Vydra could have scored twice but he has to hit the target first and foremost which none of our strikers managed during the 90 plus minutes.

In my humble opinion , who plays upfront depends on who we're playing against . Last night utd had 2 big experienced centre halves , so there was no point keep lumping the ball up towards Wood/Barnes because they weren't going to win anything . The one time in the first half when we actually played it on the deck almost created a goal for Wood . Maguire has the turning circle of the QE2 and is dodgy against anyone with a bit of pace and skill , so Vydra/Rodriguez would probably have caused him more problems . Against teams with smaller centre halves and less experienced( Wolves , Leeds , Fulham etc) , Wood/Barnes are better at bullying/winning the aerial battles which creates chances .

We actually had 11 shots, but none on target. That said, blocked shots count as off target which can make that statistic look worse.

If the Americans have any financial backing then they won't put up with this. It won't sell their brand around the world.

If they have no money then someone like Dyche will be a Godsend to them as he operates with a small budget in premier league terms.
