Decent 1st half we've limited them to very little, and at times have posed a threat, set-pieces look our best bet as we suspected pre match.

And for once we have options on the bench, which we can't often say.

Whatever happens 2nd half we've made it tough for them, and that's all we can ask of the team.

One minor negative is we haven't yet managed an effort on target, tough to win the raffle if you don't buy a ticket, but TBF I'd be reasonably satisfied with a draw from this game, I class this as a free hit, and anything we gain will be a bonus for me.

If he hadn't been booked, chances are Brady would've been booked or sent

Shaw was a yellow no more.

Goal ruled out was wrong in my opinion.

A real cowards performance from Friend.

How he didn’t show Brady a red originally is baffling.
How he’s gone back, seen the Shaw challenge and not shown a red is worse.
He’s then ruled out Maguires goal because he knows he’s messed up.

The Shaw incident

Post by Rileybobs » Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:15 pm

Lots to discuss - and I’m more relieved than disappointed in the outcome. I think Shaw got a touch on the ball and his follow through caught JBG which is why he got away with it.

But can the referee, in reviewing a possible red card for one of our players then go back and award a free kick to us for another incident? I know that technically Shaw’s challenge was reviewed for a possible red card but that was only because it led to an incident where Brady could have been sent off.

I thought the only possible outcomes were a red card to Shaw and FK to us, or a FK to Man U as originally given, with or without a red to Brady.

Good game of football so far...don't like to admit it but, that was a great header from Maguire.

Shaw didn't touch the ball it was JBG left foot

Why would Brady be sent off for an incident that is irrelevant once a foul has been committed before and play should have stopped?

When VAR is used it has to be either a red card or nothing it can’t be yellow according to the rules so Utd should have been down to 10 men

According to Clarets Player
But they only looked at that because they had to go back because of the Brady foul so they weren’t actually doing a red card check with Shaw. Once they decided it was a foul then it was decided it was a yellow and the red card check by VAR for Brady was withdrawn.

Having said that, I thought Shaw was fortunate to get just a yellow.

I think you're half right. Shaw's incident was reviewed for a red card and they realised it WAS a foul, hence Brady's incident is irrelevant

Game plan working so far but worry about keeping them at bay later as they get more adventurous.
Take a draw now.

We sure are playing more than ok, but set pieces will always be our best threat and therefore the delivery has definitely got to improve second half. Both Brady and Westwood have been guilty and we have to make those opportunities count.

Westwood needs to take the free kicks when we put our cbs up. Robbie puts them too high and slow. Or get Dwight on for the last 20 minutes.

Most saying the Maguire goal should have stood. I disagree. Pieters is just starting his leap when the Maguire left hand stops him getting up to the header. We had a similar goal given against us years back when Llorente at Swansea thundered into the back of Ben Mee then got a lift off of him to head a late equaliser.
To me if you are stopping the defender jumping that is a foul.

I reckon they will get fed up if they don't score and go into their shells, or tire, I don't think they will be as fit as us.

Loved that ball off the face!

Thinking of changing my named to Mees_Head. I think I could kick him in the head as hard as I could and he'd laugh it off.

Not to mention chucking himself into the goal like a rocket to try stop McGuire's shot.

Hardest and most committed man in the PL!

My understanding is they go and check the red card by Shaw. The decision was that it did not have sufficient force in the challenge to be a red, clearly therefore a missed caution that created the opportunity for United. Brady challenge was deemed irrelevant.
Very grey in the laws of the game tbh too
They can be interpreted to permit a yellow

Maguire got a march on Pieters. He wouldn't have got to it anyway the hand was hardly anything on the back and was convenient to feign a foul. Lucky us.
