FA cup final 1914

Post by lewishamclaret » Sat Jan 16, 2021 11:34 am

I’ve seen grainy footage of our 1914 heroics in the past but I’m not sure I’ve seen all this clip on YouTube. Better quality I think and some attempt to add colour. Apols if it has been posted before.

That's so weird I just saw this last night too!

The fans are so far back! I guess it was a cricket pitch with some temporary seating closer to the football pitch. Who would attend a match like that back then? That surely isn't 70 thousand northerners?

It was such a poor venue for a cup final. Surely there was a proper football ground that was more suitable.

Great footage - thanks for posting! Anyone else spot the player try to leap the rope barrier on left hand side (at 1.02) ...and fail miserably! "He fell over, he fell over!"

Two tough tackles. One at far end, player gets up and it’s as if nothing had happened (I liked that). Another one near this end’s goal and he stays down. He must have been really really bad or even dead! Those were the days.

Looks like it's been colourized by an algorithm to me. They do a half decent job considering they're robots but how well they can guess at colours depends on many factors including how good the quality of the original prints is - in this case, dreadful. It appears to have called the colour of kit correctly which is impressive.

The film could be stabilized and have the noise and distortion removed. There are also processes that can improve that stuttering/"fast pace" effect that is the result of the low frame rate. It's possible that this was filmed with a manual handle to feed the film which would result in the playback speed appearing to speed up/slow down too.

All of these restoration processes are expensive, takes time, expertise and needs somebody to fund it.

Still makes me laugh where the player trips when vaulting the rope ... when they are going onto the pitch about a minute in 🤣🤣🤣

Indeed. I guess we must have lost players to the war. But were of course a force again in the early 1920s.

Early projectors ran at 14-18 frames per second, modern at 24 FPS which is why old films always appear fast. As Rowls says above there are ways to correct this now and some of the World War I footage I’ve seen using the new tech recently is incredible, original footage that looks like HD. Also a lot was actually shot, that now we are starting to fully understand the processes used back then were screened in 3D

This was the last final held at Crystal Palace, the following year it was held at OT, and then the 3 post-war finals prior to Wembley opening, all took place at Stamford Bridge.

I've always been intrigued with that random climbing wall. Looking at the NLS map thingy https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by ... ht=BingHyb, I've tried all the maps, but can't find an imprint of the stadium location itself, so I can visualise the context of the great exhibition, the glass palace etc.

Can anybody shed any light, find a decent contemporary map of the palace between 1895 and 1914 please.

You're kidding - more like one of Rivaldo''s ancestors. Ball doesn't go anywhere near his face.

I presume ITV covered it as they missed the goal...

There are some fascinating videos on YouTube where someone has done exactly that to 100+ year old film (though none of it football related as far as I can see). Some of the results are really impressive, the best feature is the speed correction that makes it look all that more real.

Here’s an example.

Some great WW2 footage has been colorised too. This one is filmed in Germany after the surrender. The destruction is quite sobering. 9 mins in shows German soldiers being rounded up and looks like it could have been filmed yesterday almost.

Cheers Claret, I can see the stands now.
After much straining, it seems that they plonked it in one of the double ended condom shaped bits, which makes sense as the bottom one is now the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre (the athletics track)

This photo gives one of the best views of the old crystal palace stadium.

http://www.southlondonblog.co.uk/wp-con ... ce1905.jpg

Showing why it was used for Cup Finals. Higher capacity than other grounds . though not a great view for many.

And yes, I know I wasn't dreaming, now i'm convinced it was either the world's first ginormous climbing wall, or the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Ride Space Invaders looped through it's own black hole and landed in 1914 South London !

I looked into it a few years ago and it was a sit on fairground type attraction. There’s some photographs somewhere of people on it but would take a while to find them

A good source of information and photographs is “To The Palace For The Cup” by Ian Bevan, Stuart Hibberd and Michael Gilbert.
