Wasn't Eddie Howe the best English manager in the premier league last season..... whatever happened to him?

I’d say over the last five to ten years it’s probably been Sean Dyche.

Controversial I know, but there ya go.

It's a totally uncontroversial statement of fact, based on results, points per pound spent etc.

You have to give Potter credit for how he is bringing that Brighton team on, must be good to watch. Where it leads who knows but I’d be happy stepping out of the dark ages and watching it.

Potter has won 12 Premier League games out of 57.

His win percentage is in the Steve Kean, John Carver, Bob Bradley and Egil Olsen category. He’s at a club which is top 8 in the Premier League over the last five years for net spend.

He gets away with absolute murder. He didn’t even do that well at Swansea.

Ah yes. Brian Potter with his wonderful football and sitting about a point ahead of us having spent probably 10x as much over the last couple of seasons as a club and having played more games this season. Legend in his own lunchtime.

And they are currently above us (having played more games,I know, but you wonder if we will find the wins on current form)

Seem to have a proactive recruitment team which is something we can only dream of ;)

Brighton have played 19 games, and have amassed 17 points, so if they show similar form in the 2nd half of the campaign, they'll finish on 34 points, which will probably not be quite enough to avoid the drop, so all this pretty football might be leading them into the Championship, would you still be happy as a Brighton fan to watch that?

Exactly. A 1-0 win gets you 3 points, just like a 4-0 does.

Watched their game yesterday - their goal was a joy to watch. Intricate, technical, one-touch passing. You always feel with Brighton that they can play that sort of football but will always concede, especially late on. To their credit, they were also very good defensively yesterday and Leeds never looked like equalising.

They played a 343 formation which allowed them to build from a solid base, and then break with pace and skill when they recovered the ball. I think people assume Potter completely ripped up all of Hughton's work and has inputted a brand new style of play. From what I saw yesterday, it was very much a case of evolving Hughton's approach into a more aesthetically pleasing style, rather than a revolution. I would love to see Burnley try this now.

We'll find out towards the end of the season. Doesn't look like much between them at present.

More pleasing on the eye though.

So we are back to the age old argument of style over substance.

Brighton are playing prettier football but it's not showing a significant improvement on league position.
Wolves play prettier football but without Jimenez, they're dropping down the league with 1 win in 9 I think it is.

I'll take substance over style this season.
Now we've got new owners, we should start to see a gradual change of style because Dyche has proven he can do something different with better players and it got us into Europe.

No we are not back to an argument over style of substance.

There is very little between the substance of the two teams this season. One side plays with an attractive style, one plays with a deeply unattractive style. In that case, I'll choose the attractive style every day of the week. Nothing more to be said on that as it's simply my preference.

If the "better players" don't arrive this January window, which at the moment seems very unlikely given the talk of very limited funds, it looks as though we will have to try and tough it out with what we have.

Well there we go. Potter summed up in two posts.

I think I’ll agree with the second of them.

And yet, as I've said, there is nothing between the two teams so far this season. Aside from the obvious aesthetics, of course.

Who knows how things will pan out from here, but there is a well known saying about lies and statistics.

I really don't understand the praise that Potter gets to be honest. They're a bang average side and don't play particularly great football from what I've seen - he certainly hasn't taken the team forward much from where they were under Hughton. He seems like a thoroughly decent chap, but I don't really get some of the hype.

Stats?

We've yet to finish below Brighton, we've played in Europe and they've spent a shed load more money than us for little return.

That enough stats for you?

Okay Sid, calm. That is enough stats for me, yes. I certainly don't want you to dig anymore out unless you're really desperate to.

I was referring to the fact that someone compared him Steve Kean and Bob Bradley based on some stats. Yet the stats this season show us to be performing at roughly the same level as them. I'd have thought we'd be doing a hell of a better than a side being managed by someone like that. Just goes to show that stats alone can be made to tell you whatever you're looking to find, really.

I’m bored so I thought I’d answer my own question....since 1994 or in the last 27 seasons the massive club that is Brighton and Hove Albion have finished league seasons above us TWICE....

Championship Season 11/12 when they were 10th....we were 13th
Championship Season 12/13 when they were 4th....we were 11th

Hopefully this will put to rest the constant Brighton Brazillesque love in on here every time they win a game. Ohh and the first of the seasons that they finished above us Ashley Barnes was their top scorer...
