I never knew it was officially their name but some still refer to them as The Arsenal.

Because that's exactly where the team was formed by workers based at the weapons and munitions store (arsenal) originally based in Woolwich, south of the river. Hence "The Gunners" emblem, even after they moved to north London and dropped Woolwich from their name.
