NFL rules question

Post by huw.Y.WattfromWare » Mon Jan 18, 2021 7:21 pm

Hi guys. In the Chiefs/ Browns playoff Henne, in for Mahomes, was facing a 3rd and 14. He ran for the first down but came up just short. My question is that I thought the QB couldn’t throw a forward pass once he had crossed the line of scrimmage, am I correct?
I ask because the Browns cornerback stayed on his man until it was too late. If I am correct he could have left his wide out to tackle Henne once he had crossed the mark.

Looking forward to next weekends Conference finals Buccs at Packers, or Brady at Rodgers, and Bills at Chiefs, who could be missing the concussed Mahomes.

You are correct. No forward passes after passing the line of scrimmage. The player could have done that but the game moves so quickly that if he timed it wrong then Mahomes would have found the open man easily. Cornerbacks are notoriously tackle shy and it is possible the D co-ordinator just gave the cb one job to do.
