I never knew this.
Nihilism and existentialism are basically polar opposite philosophies. While nihilists are skeptical of everything, even their own existence, existentialists are interested in more closely examining existence, especially human existence.

Re: There is no proof of nihilism
You’d have to ask a nihilist for their thoughts....good luck with that.

Re: There is no proof of nihilism
They aren't so much polar opposites as parallel philosophies which eventually diverge. I think existentialists are actually nihilists who have developed a rather effective coping mechanism in dealing with nihilism. A nihilist might argue that such a coping mechanism (giving meaning to things simply because we can) is a psychological phenomenon and not self-evidently meaningful in an objective sense - a phenomenon which is itself the product of a system of emergent complexity which fundamentally is predicated on biology, which is itself predicated on chemistry, which is itself predicated on physics; and they might argue that when reduced to these terms, it can be shown that the physical underpinnings of the mind are fundamentally without meaning, even if higher up the ladder in that complex system the mind can conceive of meaning. A nihilist wouldn't argue that people are incapable of experiencing subjective meaning in something, but that no objective meaning exists outside of the mind. Who's right? The existentialist, who recognises a capacity to confer meaning on things, the process of which is entirely dependent upon human consciousness, or the nihilist, who argues for the meaninglessness of the edifice upon which consciousness is constructed? Do existentialists just stop short of taking nihilism to its conclusion? Do they fear its logical conclusion and pick an arbitrary point to press pause on all this nonsense? The Enclosure wrote: ↑Tue Jan 19, 2021 4:24 pmI never knew this.

I think the point is, this is why alcohol exists. Let's be honest, the IPA thread is far more useful than this one. What's the point in reductionism if you become convinced that getting sloshed is a waste of time? Where's the fun in all that?

Re: There is no proof of nihilism
Maybe it is and maybe it is not, but I tend to think that the utility in this kind of naval gazing is to be found not in metaphysical system building and the search for a reductionist 'truth' which may not possibly be attainable by nature (because we might be asking nonsensical questions, which suggests our problem is language, not methodology, or where or to what we direct our focus), but rather the utility in this kind of thinking is to be found in the ways in which asking such questions acts as a whet stone to sharpen the methodology of thought — the tools of the mind — which can be applied to making our life better. Maybe the utility in nihilism is not its final statement on the nature of the universe but rather its stone-cold sobriety, and thus its capacity for disabusing other philosophies of any superfluous romanticism?
