Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
Big pressure on Sri Lanka really. ~Going into day 4, and first innings still not concluded. Pitch hasn't yet turned into a minefield. They have to score runs, to get a big enough lead to put England under pressure. Could bring plenty of mistakes.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
Superb from the short leg but Root was just a few deliveries away from a rest and hopefully ready to resume tomorrow.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 12:07 pmAgree but great fielding.
The short leg has took blow after blow in this game so to stay focused like that is very brave and professional.
I’ve been so critical of him over the years, not taking on half centuries into centuries and then big scores. He’s been superb in these two matches and he deserved to get through to tomorrow.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
I get that and not a problem with that approach, but so close to the end of day should have sent Leach to block.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 12:04 pmWood needs to play like that, he can hit a long ball. If it comes off then it puts the pressure back on them. He will only get out to his dodgy defence if he tries to hang around.
Send Leech in if you just want to block block block.

As for the criticism of his non converting. It was nonsense looking back wasn't it? The noise around the country I mean. If he retired tonight he would finish with an average of 49. Maybe the highest ever for an Englishman, certainly the highest on the top run scorer list they put up. He has gone past KP with 15 less Tests.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
I was amazed when they put up the list of top ten England run scorers to see how fewer games he'd played but I don't think his lack of moving on 50s has been nonsense. Too often he's got out in games on those scores. Still an outstanding talent though at his best.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 24, 2021 12:19 pmYeah he has been superb and carried the team.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
Root is top quality, up there amongst our best ever.
Gets a bit more stick on here because he’s from Yorkshire but he’s a genius. Could he convert a bit more? Probably. But he’s far better than anything else we’ve got.

Market currently says England have a 70% chance of winning at this time. Sri Lanka are 5/2 if you fancy this score is enough.

As quick as we got in a winning position we have quite possibly thrown it away.
Positive batting from them and 4 drop catches.
Root has got the 9th.

Root finished them off with 2 in 2 balls. On a hat trick when he next bowls in India.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
I’m glad the team don’t panic as much as some on here. One score of 40 is hardly throwing it away. The Sri Lanka batting early was rotten. Panic set in massively with them. England relax and play this sensibly, and they will be grand.

46-1 at Tea.
A very solid start, with sensible batting.
Calm and composed, and all will be grand. Sky pundits have to build tension, hence the rhetoric of "it's doing lots, it's a big challenge" - The betting Market doesn't have to build tension, hence England shortening from 1.4 (2/5) to 1.11 (1/9)

84-3 - Root just gone, bowled around his pads.
Lawrence, Sibley and Buttler need to remain calm as they are used over the next 20 overs.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
Definitely squeaky bum time. Going to be very close.
A saw somewhere (maybe BBC website) that it was the first time in test cricket that a team (or maybe just England?) had taken all 10 wickets with pace in 1st innings, all 10 with spin in 2nd. Very unusual obviously.

Yep.
The players will benefit from being under huge pressure though.
Scoring rates have been good all day, despite all the wickets.

But make no mistake, if we win it will be a huge achievement. Winning 2-0 away from home, in spinning friendly conditions. Doing it the hard way, batting 2nd and chasing.
Top top effort.

Fair play to Sibley, he gets knocked left, right and centre, and has really dug in and anchored this innings here. Hopefully it's been a very useful learning curve for him having these 2 games in Galle.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
For the record - I wasn't ever nervous. Sri Lanka's batting this morning was very poor. Complete panic, rash shots, no patience. Pitch didn't seem to be a snake pit, which is what would have been suggested at 80-8. It was turning, but it wasn't ripping square with uneven bounce. It just required calm heads and patience, and I was very confident all would be ok.
A good tour, with plenty of positives, and the world class performers, in Root, Anderson and Broad came to the fore again.

Well played England.
Great Test for Buttler as well. I thought he might have played it out to get his 50, but unselfishly prioritised the win.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 2nd Test
Too true. Lots of people saying he cant play spin but he's anchored the 4th innings in test where the opposition got cheaply bowled out by spin in the 3rd innings. It suggests he learns quickly and has v good character. Well done to Butler too who eased a lot of pressure from Sibley by scoring quickly.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 11:39 amFair play to Sibley, he gets knocked left, right and centre, and has really dug in and anchored this innings here. Good win for the lads, albeit not a great Sri Lankan team.
Some good signs from this series all round.
