Burnley wins at Anfield

Post by FCBurnley » Fri Jan 22, 2021 1:15 am

1962-63. Won 2-1. Irvine and Lochhead I think. I was there in the middle of the kop. Big mistake but we won in their first season after promotion
1974-5. Won 1-0. I was lucky enough to be there again to see Ian Brennan’s winning goal
2020-21 Won 1-0. Sadly no Clarets were there to see Ashley Barnes score from the spot to seal an historic Clarets win. Congrats to Ash on his 100th goal
I only wrote this to emphasize what a magnificent win this was for our team

Yes sir. We don’t get many Anfield wins in a lifetime. Tonight was very special and well deserved

The house is quiet, son on night shift, Mrs and daughter gone to bed, but I'm still wide awake. A great win which lifts the spirits. I was 11 when we last beat them at their place and didn't make my 1st trip to Anfield until the FA Cup game of 1979 when we lost 3-0. I'd nicked off school in Heywood to be there. Got a bus to Burnley, then was on Viscount Central coach 5. There was loads of trouble that night before and after the game. I got the coach to drop me in Rawtenstall on the way back, then sheepishly rang my Dad from a phone box to come and pick me up. He was a lot calmer than I expected him to be.

I went to the cup tie with Barry Kilby. We were so much better than the score suggests. Derek Scott could have had a hat trick.

Felt we had the momentum at home when Taylor rounded Grobelaar but someone cleared off the line.

I said on the prediction thread I had a good feeling and thought we'd win 2-1. I work with some Scousers and they were all very quiet last night. I didn't clock why until I checked my phone at my break and went up to them like.

You don’t know how football media works, the title should be all about them.

I was in the paddock to your left, level with the edge of the penalty area towards the Kop end.

I stood in the same place, with the same Liverpool fans in the 75/76 season.... They were much more talkative after that game.

I was 13. Near the final whistle, the bloke we went with told us to wait on the concourse to avoid the crush. We were then cornered by a few scouser youths. Wanted to search us for scarves. Luckily the whistle went and we got away. Taking the 2 points with us.

That season we nearly got into Europe I think. Brilliant team, I met Ian Brennan, Leighton James and Ray Hankin soon after that game when they turned up at Colne Baths to give me a trophy. I was more proud to meet Ian Brennan because of his goal at Anfield. The other two didn't get a look in from my 11 year old self.

I too was there in 74 to witness Ian Brennans winner, also met his sister once at Gisburne Park hospital where she worked as a nurse, remember her saying that he never stops talking about it and who would blame him. UTC!

Thank you Sean Dyche and all the Burnley players.

I started work in London in August 1974 and I am sure I went to Highbury to watch our win. I almost certainly wasn’t at Anfield. I too can retire this year.

Been 3 times to Anfield and we lost all 3 times. First time was Milk Cup semi final 1983. There were a number of Liverpool "fans" at school back then as Liverpool won the league on an almost annual basis. I got a bit of stick from them when i got to school, so asked them which stand were you in? The Kop maybe? Oh well i don't go to watch them, just have the kit, bag, scarf, sweatbands, flag and posters on the wall in my bedroom etc.

I was in the Kemlyn Road stand. A look of bemusement, then so you went to Anfield last night? I did, i am a fan, i support my team. So me as a Burnley fan have been to Anfield more times than you the massive Liverpool fan...

I also went twice in the 90s, the League Cup game in 1994 and the FA Cup game in 1996.

I was at Anfield in Oct.74 when Ian Brennan scored a 'screamer' down at the Kop end and I have to stress that a very young Billy Rodaway was magnificent in the centre of our defence. He'd have been very pleased as he is an Evertonian.
Just to mention when we beat a newly promoted Liverpool in Sep.62 one of our goalscorers was Ray Pointer with a shot that was described in the press at the time as ' the shot that rocked the Kop'. I wasn't allowed to go but .my older brother did so he's seen us win 3 times now at Anfield.

Wasn’t at the Kop end, Silky. I was right behind it in the Anfield Rd end.
At least we can say we were there when Burnley fans last saw their team win at Anfield.

Do you mean Ian Brennan's goal or Ray Pointer's? Brennan's definitely at the Kop end but Ray's I'm not certain because I wasn't there so just know about it because of the headline it received.

Brilliant!! For the last 40 odd years I had convinced myself that I was the only Claret to have witnessed this momentous result standing in the Kop! My brother in law, a L'pool fan took me. Unlike you Grumps I couldn't help but cheer, long and loud!! I can still recall just how still & quiet it was around me as I yelled out! :o :o :o My brother in law wasn't too happy to put it mildly! Happy memories! Didn't Taffy almost make it 2 near the end when Liverpool were "going for it" or is my memory playing tricks? Great night then, great night last night!

Brennan’s Anfield Rd end. Mrs Huw and myself were just above crossbar height in the photo higher up the thread. I've never stood on the Kop.

Surely Cajun’s photo shows the Kop in the background, and thus he scored at the Anfield Rd end?

I watched the game live without sound (I don't like being distracted by the commentators).
Then I watched the whole build up, game and the post-match with sound until 4 a.m. followed by the first 30 minutes of the cricket !!
Thank heavens for the lockdown !!

August 1974-February 1975:worst 6 months of my life; living in Ellesmere Port while studying for Solicitors' finals at Chester Law College; except for two events: meeting the future Mrs PC on New Years Eve and standing as quietly as possible on the Kop that glorious night in September, just about in line with Ian Brennan as he let fly.

Well, for over 46 years I've always thought the goal was scored at the Kop end. We were in the seats with the Kop to our right. However, can't argue with the evidence on show so it appears I've been wrong all this time. Like anyone my age I'll put it down to advancing years. Oh dear

Definitely Anfield Road end, we were in the Paddock to the right of the halfway line and I can still picture it going in today.
46 years ago, good grief I can’t remember what I did last week :(

My 1st visit was as a 5 year old in 1965 to see us draw 1-1.

2nd visit was when we won in 74 when Ian Brennan hit that scorcher with his left peg.
