That's worthy of Milton, Shakespeare, Eliot and Dickens. Bravo!

Special night wasn't it? Loved it but that last line summed it up, just wish we could have been there.

Me neither, I keep switching the TV on and watching the goal and then the final whistle. I'm still going crazy when Dean blows.

Fantastic report Tony. Obviously it's easier when we get results like that but it's still a great report.

I happen to think the penalty was a touch on the soft side (though still a penalty under the modern interpretation of the rules) but given the number we've had turned down it's not something I think anyone is in the position to deny us.

I think the decision is spot on.

1. Dean gives himself time to see what develops before giving the foul by Fabinho
2. Alisson catches Barnes
3. Seen as a genuine attempt to play the ball so no red card

As for reports,

Someone once said you need three or four incidents to wrap a report around. It's the mundane games that are difficult to write, more so watching on TV. When we are crap it's that bit easier and when it's like last night the passion and emotion just takes over. I'm still full of that passion and emotion even now.

Interesting thoughts there CT.

On the few occasions I've written a guest report or submitted a report for a fanzine (usually WTBM in those happy days of yore) I always tried to envisage the match as a story. The details alone aren't necessarily inately interesting; what is interesting is the wider story around them.

There's a real art and science and skillset to writing a good report and they're far too rare these days when so many people can "publish" themselves online.

I'm vowing now that I'll thank you one day for a well written report on a game in which we played stinkingly bad or there wasn't much to say.

But for now, it's still a time to set our sails happily take us where they may.

UTC!

When we are crap it comes out in anger. Back in the 1986/87 I had a blazing row with one of our players before the away game at Scunthorpe towards the end of the season. He was warming up and had a go at me and I more than gave it back. We are good mates now though. That season I witnessed so many fans falling out with each other, the passion has become frustration and frustration leads to anger.

Then, from 22nd Jan 2020 to 21st Jan 2021 we go and win at Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool - absolutely incredible.

Reading the comments on YouTube and BBC by fans of other teams makes you realise how unpopular Liverpool are, and it makes a nice change to win so many friends instead of the usual disdain for out style of play.

Initially, I thought that too, but seeing the incident from the other (right-hand side) of the pitch, its clear that the keeper wipes out Ash's legs.

A great report on a fabulous night Tony, heroic performances by all our boys.
Am glad you mentioned Tarkowski being thrown to the ground right in front of the linesman, how timid and incompetent?

Wow! what a difference 5 days makes, this report is night and day to your reaction to the West Ham defeat, however it's totally merited after that display.

And what a graceful loser Klopp is not, talk about throwing your toys out of the pram.

I'm glad you highlighted the absence of Henderson, they really do miss his presence in their midfield, however that shouldn't detract from our victory in any way, nor should the fact he didn't start Firmino and Salah, he thought he could beat us with a shadow side, well! Jurgen that was a big mistake.

Great report on a special night of football. That result will have gone around the world, in every sports paper on every radio station and every newspaper.

Like you said CT "What a shame we couldn't have been there to give them the reception they deserved". That would have been a special night !

Great report,CT. They did have a lot of possession( similar figures to when we beat them 2-0 at home a couple of seasons ago) but as the game progressed it became apparent that the yellow wall wasn't going to be breached. Each one of them a hero last night and I'm glad you mentioned the blatant foul on Tarks down in the corner that was totally ignored by the assistant just before half time that had me once more contributing to the swear box.

I do wonder if we would have been awarded the penalty if the crowd were there. Refs always seem to get influenced by the fans.

I have lived away from the area sine 1966 and I have to admit that it has helped, particularly in those dark days, because I travelled to the match and then was out of the area until the next match, therefore, I was quite immune to a lot of the feelings of local fans and my frustrations were suffered privately ---and there were plenty.

I was like you with that incident in the corner when Mane fouled Tarks and could not understand how we did not get a free kick.
Last night was just so special and every player played his part, Sean got his second substitution spot on because Brady had tired, Joey added some energy and Ashley kept his cool and I hit the Claret!

Excellent report Tony.
I disagree with one item: the penalty.
I thought the referee could have awarded two penalties, one for the tug on Ashley's arm, which was definitely inside the box, and one for the foul by the keeper. In fact I would like to ask Mike Dean for which incident he gave the penalty !!

I’ve checked it and the Fabinho foul looks outside the box. But again it’s brilliant from Dean because he gives himself the time to see the whole picture. That’s why, in my opinion, he’s our best best referee by a distance.

Great teams are the ones that keep winning things. Bill Shankly & Bob Paisley had great teams. This one is a damn good side that could become great. Only a few weeks ago I was convinced they were going to retain the title.

What's incredible is that just a few weeks ago they put seven past Crystal palace and it looked like they would dominate the league again.

They are a hell of a good side. That doesn’t disappear overnight. I said in the report and I really do believe that Henderson is a big miss for them but they still have some fantastic players.

Never known the PL so open as this year, with probably half a dozen (maybe. more) capable of winning the PL. How Liverpool can both concede 7 and score 7 in two different games in the same season

That 7 at Villa was a strange game but incredibly they could be 7th by the time they play again.

Still buzzing.
the keeper collision with Ashley B, in my view was very similar to the one Vs Chelsea in the first minutes at home earlier in the season.
The ref didn't give it and VAR didn't seem to check.
not so important I guess...

On big nights, you savour the headlines.Saw this in The Guardian at full time and it perfectly summed up my feelings.

In the fifties after games at Turf Moor the local streets would be lined by housewives standing by the garden gates wanting to know the final score. The reply was always either We Won or They Lost or Drew. Tells you everything you need to know about football fans and I suspect fans like CT who report on their clubs matches. Must be be very difficult not to over react to the result. Win or lose.

I don't know whether you will remember FCBurnley but the last time we won at Anfield we travelled over in your van with the now sadly departed Ray and Brian. If memory serves, Brian nearly got us all lynched at the end of the game in the days of non segregation.

I was told recently that Ian Brennan, who scored that night, hasn't been so well. I hope Thursday night gave him a lift.

I had completely forgotten about that. Concentrates the mind when you think Brian and Ray are no longer with us. They were great times although away games were pretty hairy. Wish I could remember the details that you do although I am healthy for my age my memory ain’t great. Sorry to hear about Ian Brennan. What a goal that was. We go back a hell of a long way and two things I remember about that night.

1. Brian suggested if we were still in front with five minutes to go we should sidle over towards the exit and if we won we should leave in silence. Brian then never moved and at the final whistle raised his arms in the air and bellowed (and Brian bellowed): "I've waited ten ******* years for this."

2. We were parked on that artificial sports ground that they used to use as a car park on match days for both clubs. I got separated from you on the way back, couldn't find the van and you climbed onto the bonnet waving your shouting until I spotted you.

You could probably do a This is Your Life for me haha. In 74 I lived on Hillingdon Rd and worked for my dad. Hence the van. Was probably a Ford Anglia van with no seats in back. Glad I was driving. Did you ever pay your share of the petrol money ? 😂. The good old days mmmm I guess they were. Probably enjoyed Redrose cricket as much as anything. Amazing how life changes

Anyone else think that Ash ‘buys’ the penalty by dropping his leading leg onto Alisson to ensure contact? Cute if he does.

I might be wrong though as perhaps Alisson catches Ash’s leading leg first with his glove.

Anyway who really cares? Job done
