What's your nicest part of Burnley and surrounding areas?

Post by FactualFrank » Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:46 pm

I think knocking down Towneley High School and replacing it with a pond is the best thing Burnley have ever done...

However, forget that, what do you like about Burnley?
If somebody comes to town where would you take them to show off the town?

I agree...I hated that school with a passion.
Mind you, I just hated school.

I went to Towneley High School and miss the place!

Nicest part has to be Towneley Hall and parkland.

We are very lucky living in Burnley to be surrounded by some beautiful green spaces, all within a couple of miles or so. Towneley park is lovely too, and I have a soft spot for Scott park also.

Personally love the view to pendle from black moss reservoir. Also love the view to Pendle from noggarth.

So Pendle it is I suppose.

Sometimes when you live in the area you actually take what you have for granted. I see the names people call Burnley and especially the surrounding area as nothing short of jealousy.

You're not telling me that people who live in the vicinity of the likes of Millwall, Palace,Loftus Rd and have probably never seen a hill or cattle for that matter, only rundown concrete jungles have owt remotely to match our scenery :)

I always thought, when I lived in Burnley, how lucky I was to have places like Towneley, Thompson's & Queen's Park and Gawthorpe to visit and the town surrounded by wonderful countryside only a few minutes drive away.
I've lived in various parts of England and people always assumed that any where "up north" was like Coronation St with no green spaces anywhere near.
All the parks have to be funded adequately...its vitally important to maintain those resources to a high standard.

Surrounding areas... All the moorland and reservoirs you could wish for! Stoodley.Pike however you approach it is fantastic... Minus the rubbish bit of Man City graffiti..Gaddings dam is a must see and if you dare swim in. If you're up for a long trek the Mary Townley loop will take a couple of days. Gorpal rocks and Withins or Hesanford reservoirs.

I'd take em to Barley to show them Pendle, but we wouldn't be able to park without the locals kicking off!!! So I'd go to Towneley hall instead.

Long causeway down to Worsthorne via Hurstwood isxa beautiful walk. A trek from Clowbridge across Hambledon Hill and dropping into Hapton is a lovely walk. Gawthorpe Hall and Townley Hall well worth a visit. We are blessed with great walks and scenery.

When people slate Burnley for being horrible or rough, I always point out to them what we have on our doorstep, and the fact we're close enough to Manchester, Leeds etc, whilst also being far enough away

Worsthorne. Great views of Pendle, lovely walks on to the moors, and you get to man the machine gun towers that keep the Yorksire rabble out.

I am a few minutes walk away from being up on Crown Point and I have a fantastic view of Pendle from upstairs here. Always a reminder of how fantastic the countryside is around here.

I was talking to someone at work last year who lives just north of London. Stevenage I think he said. I was amazed when he said he and his wife have stayed in Burnley several times when holidaying up north down the years.

His view was that the town is typically industrial, the town centre nothing to write home about, like other towns, but we have some of the most beautiful countryside on our doorstep, the outskirts are lovely, and Burnley is a good base to travel around the north west because of the location and cost. He also said the parks in the town are gorgeous in summer which I couldn’t disagree with.

Easily pleased? Possibly, but we are quick to talk our own town down.

For me, the parks, Hurstwood etc are a nice walk.

All the parks in Burnley are great.

I live next to Scott Park and it’s brilliantly kept by the council and the volunteers that raise money for things to go in it.

Scott Park is a spit and a stone's throw from where I live yet I don't think I've ever been in. Once able, I'll definitely put that right.

A few years ago someone I know through work came up for a weekend when we played Swansea. He was expecting a ****-hole of a town centre and the surrounding area in general. He ended up praising the town centre and he and his missus fell in love with one of our local parks and the countryside. I think the media have a lot to answer for.

Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds/Bradford airports all less than an hour away
Direct train links to Leeds and Manchester
Some great Restaurants and Gastro Pubs within 30 minutes drive
Great Parkland and open spaces
Award winning Spa facility and Hotel
Premier League Football
Relatively low housing costs

My daughter had never been to the singing ringing tree, so we had a walk down when we were passing for work one day. The view was great, the problem was the rubbish on the car park, rubbish at the tree and dog owners who hadn't cleaned up.

We have a lot of lovely areas, towneley, Thompson park, barley/pendle, gawthorpe, noyna, countless walks. The problem is some people just seem determined to spoil them for others through their laziness.

A lot of the old east Lancashire mill / mining town along the length of railway line are tired and badly in need of investment. But step a short distance outside of these areas and the countryside is as good as anywhere. The villagers around Pendle especially are outstanding.

All of Pendleside is beautiful....Roughlee, Noggarth, Barley, Newchurch...but I think the moorland "over Widdop" between Colne and Hebden Bridge, including Thursden Valley, the Pack Horse pub and Hardcastle Crags is just sensational. The moors between Colne and Haworth/Oxenhope are also fantastic.

I have a real fascination with Pendle Hill, lived in a Barrowford for around 10 years and got annoyed that I couldn’t see the hill each day.

In the end 1 of the reasons we moved was for the Pendle view, then I found out that one of the best views of the hill is from the checkouts at Sainsbury’s in Colne.

Here is our view

Lots of wonderful examples listed in posts above and one of my favourites is reasonably close to the town and that’s Queens Park , a very good cafe in there as well.
