Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
Took over at Mansfield with them 22nd in League 2, no win in 11 games and one place above the relegation spots, on 6th November .... They're now 13th, eleven points clear of relegation and have won the last five on the trot, as well as making the FA Cup 3rd round ...
Seems to do a good job wherever he goes ..

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
I think he’s only interested in managing midlands clubs. He doesn’t travel far. His playing career and management career so far shows that he’ll only take jobs within a short driving distance of his home. I’m sure most would if they had the choice. From Derby isn’t he?

Born in Sunderland apparently, but raised in the Derby area.
Just looking at his wiki page and I'd forgotten he played for England too.

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
Brian Clough was Sunderland Youth team Coach before taking the Manager's job at Hartlepools United in late 1965. Clough took the Derby County job in 1967, shortly after Nigel's 1st birthday ...GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 7:54 amBorn in Sunderland apparently, but raised in the Derby area. 7 times as many England appearances as his dad, who, amazingly, scored nearly a goal a game throughout his career.

267 goals in 296 League and Cup games is one hell of a goal-scoring record !!CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:24 am7 times as many England appearances as his dad, who, amazingly, scored nearly a goal a game throughout his career.

I looked that up and was stunned! I don’t think Middlesbrough and Sunderland were top flight then though?Clarets4me wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:32 am267 goals in 296 League and Cup games is one hell of a goal-scoring record !!
There’s a pic on Wiki of an England team with John Connelly, Brian Clough and Ronnie Clayton

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
Did nothing special in a long period at Derby and was soon got rid of at Sheffield United. I'm not sure I can agree with you on the doing a good job wherever he goes.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 1:56 amTook over at Mansfield with them 22nd in League 2, no win in 11 games and one place above the relegation spots, on 6th November .... Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
His dad was an incredible goalscorer, mainly in the second division. I think I maybe saw him play once in a 0-0 draw against Sunderland on the Turf.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:32 am267 goals in 296 League and Cup games is one hell of a goal-scoring record !!
My dad said he was found out at top level because (in my dad's words) he was as slow as a carthorse. But one sensational record a division below.

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
Nigel was a very good player but not as good as his Dad. They were both internationals but Clough senior would have gone on to have a long international career had he not been injured. Nigel was only just at international level.CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:24 am7 times as many England appearances as his dad, who, amazingly, scored nearly a goal a game throughout his career.
As for managerial ability, again Clough senior is ahead but this time by a wide margin. He's one of the greatest managers ever.
Clough junior has only achieved what his budgetary allowances have permitted him. He has had success at managerial level but has never over-achieved or taken a club without resources and good funding from nowhere to somewhere.
His spell in charge of Derby exposed his limitations when he did not have an excessive budget to work with.

And again at Burton when money was tight but, to be fair to the bloke, he actually resigned from Burton to help keep them afloat. No moaning, no payoff. I'm sure it's a gesture he could afford but even so.
I think his dad instilled some pretty good values in young Nigel.

I gather he's a decent chap but I don't rate him as a manager.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 5:27 pmAnd again at Burton when money was tight but, to be fair to the bloke, he actually resigned from Burton to help keep them afloat. How are you keeping in the midlands there, "eddie"? Seems a lifetime ago we were sharing a pint in the sun at Charlton!
All the best & UTC

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
All good here, Rowls !
What a day that was. On at Lichfield TV - Preston for you, I think - and beers near the Shard to start the day. I met a BFC fan and his sister who, like me, had ahem "acquired" tickets for the seating to the left hand side as you lads looked up the pitch. Went off to the BFC pub Blackheath with them - his sister who was pretty cute, I have to say, invited me to a party of hers not far from there. Sadly, I had to decline..
I loved the station announcer congratulating us on our win, promotion and championship as we got back into Central London. Continued to get ratted and just about made it for our train home.
Have you still got the "trophy" or is it in the club museum ?

I managed to run onto the pitch (I was fearful for my safety you understand, I certainly wasn't intent on tresspassing onto the playing area which is a criminal offence) and gave it to Tom Heaton.evensteadiereddie wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 5:41 pmAll good here, Rowls !

The last known whereabouts of my homemade trophy is at 1:12 in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stSov9J ... otballClub
However, there was a very similar one which had Claret & Blue ribbons. Mine was lacking in ribbons. The two shouldn't be confused because whoever made the one with ribbons deserves the credit! In the end it was easier for the team to celebrate with the inflatable ones.
Last sighting of my trophy:
After the match we should have re-visited the same pre-match haunts but we unwisely trekked out to find some better real ale and missed out on a bit of the atmosphere. Oh well, it certainly didn't take any gloss off what was undoubtedly one of the best days of my life.
Hope to bump into you again sometime and have a catch up. If we're ever going to a game on the mainline from Burton/Tamworth I'll get in touch on here.
UTC!

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
Brilliant. I sort of regret not heading back towards London Bridge and the Claret stronghold that had become but there were plenty of Clarets and shenanigans at Blackheath.
I loved the fact that there was no pressure and it was going to be a great day whatever the result. The crazy goings-on with the Charlton fans, a decent bunch of lads, made it even more bizarre. I was saddened by talking to one old Charlton lad on the train going in who told me, given the circumstances at the club, he'd not be going again. Ah well.
Yes, please do. We'll plan our pub visits a bit more carefully this time.

That I doubt. Brian played twice for England but had long been discarded long before his injuries plagued his career.

He was only playing in Division 2 though. Had he made it to the 1st Division I can well imagine he'd have been in '66 squad.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 6:19 pmThat I doubt. Brian played twice for England but had long been discarded long before his injuries plagued his career.

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
As I said, I think I saw him play once but from what I was told he was nowhere near the quality and was very much a prolific second division goalscorer. But I'm only going off what I was told and not what I saw.

Re: Nigel Clough at Mansfield ....
To be fair, he only played 3 1st Division games and that was when he was trying to come back from the ACL injury that ended his career at 29. He had the injury at 27, so how many might he have scored if he'd played to 33/34 ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 6:29 pmAs I said, I think I saw him play once but from what I was told he was nowhere near the quality and was very much a prolific second division goalscorer.
