First two episodes were shown on BBC2 on Friday 22nd January.

Based on a true story of a man who had built his own submarine and took a journalist on board for a trip in 2017. The journalist's boyfriend later reported she had disappeared.

If this was fiction it would be good. The fact that it is true is incredible. Unfortunately I read about this at the time. I think it would be more interesting viewing if I had not known the story.

A very good series (watched all 6 episodes over the weekend on iPlayer too) ...takes an interesting stance in giving absolutely no time to "the accused" who is never seen or named. Slow-paced but gripping and felt respectful the poor female journalist who was murdered on board the submarine.

The series is produced in a proper way. The drama builds slowly and I, too, had to binge watch on iplayer. The fact you know the story will not spoil the viewing I am sure. It grew on me and was excellent.

Interesting fact is Kim's parents' dog was played by their actual dog.

A shame as you miss out on a lot of great stuff if you have such an aversion to subtitles. I'm currently watching the French police series Spiral on iPlayer and it's superb. For myself I find that I very quickly forget about the subtitles altogether once I start watching.

I find this very sad. It is to be hoped you never lose your hearing. I rely on subtitles for everything I watch, not just foreign dramas.

Well, it was partially said in jest, but there are two problems I have with subtitles. Firstly, I’m blind in one eye and so I’m a slow reader. Often they’ve disappeared before I’ve read them. Secondly, I can occasionally become momentarily distracted and miss things.

I think my sight might go before my hearing, in which case I’ll have to turn the TV up loud and guess what’s on screen!

There's some cracking Scandi-Drama's on BBC2, BBC4 and Channel 4. Not watched it yet but 'All the Sins' on Channel 4 looks good from previews. It's a Finnish crime drama currently on.

...and another outstanding Scandi-noir is The Bridge. 4 series and disturbingly gripping. You soon get over the subtitles. Just watched the whole thing again during lockdown and it was even better second time round (I missed loads of stuff from the first run through).

Generally I'm fed up with the Scandinavian crime series as they are continuously dark with no relief whatsoever. I did see the first episode of The Bridge though - the discovery of the torso on the bridge, or rather the fact that it had been cut it in half, was a 'Jaws' moment.

I'm OK with subtitles generally but some very wordy films (notably French), and some Japanese Anime are hard to keep up with. The latter though often come with American English overdubs which work but are usual irritating because of the Americanism.

I know where you're coming from about the 'darkness' of The Bridge. Even the way it's filmed is almost in grayscale. That being said, there are quite a few light moments associated with the main character (Saga Noren) and her struggles with autism. Part of the brilliance of the programme - and it is very well written - is that it can draw some humorous moments without trivialising what must be a crippling condition for most ( I would assume)
