Yep. Very good indeed. I’d forgotten the stigma that was attached to this disease at the time. Some of it was a difficult watch but enjoyed it non the less.
Fortunately, the days of this thing being a death sentence are way behind us.

Not watched yet, plan to start it when I've next got an evening off work.
Saw an advert on the back of a bus this morning, with a female person on it, about getting a tested for aids.
It's about time straight people woke up and realised they can get this as easily as any other std.

Weird how it became associated only with Gay people when it had been around for decades and killing men, women and children...

Really enjoyed this show (if that’s the right word considering how harrowing it is at times). The AIDS epidemic was a definite blind spot in my knowledge, really interesting to see just how feared it was at the time and how people were treated.

Its not the same, but sadly i heard of a Phillipino nurse being abused as a "Chinese *******" etc...... Idiots like Trump and Farage spew rhetoric and it has consequences. I worry its not an isolated case.Granny WeatherWax wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 7:42 pmHorrific. Imagine that happening now in the current pandemic.

Re: It's a Sin. Channel 4
Many people forget, or don’t know that 1,243 out of 5,000 innocent British Haemophiliacs died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses. The remainder suffered other viruses like Hepatitis ‘C which has killed many more.
This was as a result of having to inject factor concentrates made from blood pooled in the USA which was sourced from donors paid to give their blood. Donors were generally skid row drug addicts, prisoners or gay prostitutes.
The suffering, stigma and loss of life from the biggest treatment disaster in the history if the NHS was largely ignored and covered up by successive governments until Theresa May granted a public inquiry after nearly 40 of campaigning.

Sorry Martin, i empathise, but the use of the word innocent there has troubling connotations implying that other victims were somehow "guilty" and deserved to contract HIV.....martintheaker wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 7:48 pmMany people forget, or don’t know that 1,243 out of 5,000 innocent British Haemophiliacs died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses. There's a difference between irresponsible behaviour during a national pandemic and getting treatment for an illness and being told the products designed to help you are safe when actually they weren't..

Being promiscuous and practicing unsafe sex when there is a deadly virus rife in a particular community doesn't deserve a death sentence I agree, but being irresponsible comes with consequences and in the case of aids it was a death sentence.ZizkovClaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:03 pmOf course i get it, but being promiscuous doesnt deserve a death sentence.....
It's not difficult to keep your dick in your pants, or play safe, when there is something this deadly floating about and there was no known treatment for it at the time.
Those who'd gone for treatment for other illnesses were the innocent ones in all this.

You are massively generalising. Some were undoubtedly irresposible, and those infected by contaminated blood products are rightly angry, but lets not tar everyone with the same brush?GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:37 pmBeing promiscuous and practicing unsafe sex when there is a deadly virus rife in a particular community doesn't deserve a death sentence I agree, but being irresponsible comes with consequences and in the case of aids it was a death sentence.

If you're practising unsafe sex during a pandemic of an STD then you're irresponsible.
People still have unsafe sex now even though stds/sti's are still around, Inc Aids/HIV
If you're getting treatments for an illness, which you've been told are safe but then turn out to be infected, you're an innocent.
A clear and distinct difference.

What is your cut-off for when homosexuals became guilty victims? 1981 when it first appeared were innocent? what about say... 1982, 1983, 1984? Just wondering? Just so we knowGodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:55 pmI'm not massively generalising though.

Aids was known about several decades before, it wasn't unique to gay men.ZizkovClaret wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 8:58 pmWhat is your cut-off for when homosexuals became guilty victims? 1981 when it first appeared were innocent? what about say... 1982, 1983, 1984? Just wondering? Just so we know
Also the first death in the UK was in 81, Terence Higgins in 82.
It was too late by then though, it was spreading through promiscuous men having unprotected sex.
Part of the issue would be how gay men were viewed by the country as a whole, usually disdain and disgust.
However, if you've gone about having unprotected sex after it became a nationwide issue then it was your own fault quite simply if you caught it, I believe that's the answer you're seeking.

Re: It's a Sin. Channel 4
Dan, I see what you’re saying about my use of the word ‘innocent’ when referring to haemophiliacs. There were of course many other innocent victims including the partners of men who may have been leading double lives. The guilty ones would be the skid row drug addicts, prisoners and gay prostitutes who continued to sell their blood and spread the disease.
There’s also a corporate guilt from the Pharma companies who pooled the blood they purchased and sold the factor concentrates for massive profits, the infected blood inquiry has lots of evidence to sift through and I hope they are brought to face justice.

Fantastic drama, interesting that BBC & ITV turned down the chance to air it.
A huge tragedy for many communities. As stated by Martin above the Infected Blood Inquiry was finally agreed in July 17. It then took another year before the chair was working on it full time. It is still in progress and is not due to report its findings until 2022. Over 1,000 Haemophiliac's were infected with HIV and over 3,000 with HCV, many have died, many live with the disease.
After years and years of ignorance and heads in the sand I do believe that Sir Brian Langstaffe ( chair ) will deliver the objectives of the Inquiry, it is long overdue

For anyone with Amazon Prime, there is an 8 part mini series called ‘Unspeakable’ based on haemophiliac families affected by the infected blood scandal in Canada.
Their situation mirrors that of the UK in many ways and it’s a set of very moving personal stories based on real life events.
I hope more people can find time to watch it.
