Re: Vydra
Outstanding yesterday but wonder how many chances he he needs in order to score in the PL. Suspect since he started to feature more after May, he has had a dozen chances plus but yet to score. You cant criticise his energy and positions he takes up

Re: Vydra
That's a fair enough explanation of your position, but I would make this last point. Vydra gets criticism for missing chances on the rare occasion he gets to play. (I'm sure he'd be sharper if he got a run like Wood, but he doesn't.) Yet Wood must have missed a dozen 'sitters' this season, yet continues to play, even though his hold up play is poor. How often is the ball played up to him, and he instantly loses it?Goodclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 9:08 amI DO get it, cheers. I get that Vydra creates chances. I get that Vydra played very, very well yesterday. I get that Vydra offers something different to the other strikers.
On the flip side I get that Wood has scored double figures for us for the last 3 PL seasons. I get why Dyche sees Wood as our best, most clinical striker. I get why Dyche will pick Wood if he is available based on my first two points.
The one thing I do get is that none of my posts on the subject of Vydra are writing him off. I don't just say Wood should play and Vydra should rot. I have already said I like all 4 of our strikers. Vydra offers us something and I want him to stay at the club as a rotating striker. I just don't get fans who don't think Wood is any good when his record for scoring is totally the opposite.
Anyway, I will leave it there for now and I hope Vydra has as good a game during the week as he did yesterday. If he becomes more clinical in front of goal, along with his other attributes then he will begin to build his case of being picked ahead of Wood.
I hope that explains my views in a balanced way Gordaleman. Enjoy your Sunday.
Anyway, maybe the Bournemouth game will give us an indication of what Sean thinks? Me, I'd play Vyds again and let him increase his sharpness ahead of the Palace game on Saturday. (Obviously, the injury situation will play a part.) After all, he can't be tired, with the limited game time he's had.
C'mon you Clarets.

Re: Vydra
No need to compare Wood to Vydra. Wood is easily our best goal scorer and starts when fit, the question is more around who should partner him.
Against the big clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea etc where we need to feed off scraps Barnes should get the nod. Against the mid table and bottom sides it should be between Vydra and Jay with whoever is in form and training well getting the nod
Off course if Wood is completely out of sorts we should rest him and play a two of the other three and if Barnes is on fire against the better teams he should keep his place alongside Wood against some of the weaker teams
This would rotate our players nicely and allow us to adapt our approach and style of play depending on the opposition

Like a number of our strikers, he's trying too hard. He needs to stop overthinking stuff and just put his laces through the ball more.warksclaret wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:58 amOutstanding yesterday but wonder how many chances he he needs in order to score in the PL. Is there a role for him to play behind the likes of Barnes and Wood? His through ball to JBG yesterday was perfect and just begged a goal to be scored from it.

Perfect, and his strength, close control , and ability to make space for himself that led to his through ball was one of the highlights of the match.RalphCoatesComb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 2:12 pmLike a number of our strikers, he's trying too hard. Playing him deeper behind the strikers though takes away his ability to get behind defenders which we need to make more chances

Re: Vydra
To be fair, yesterday's chance wasn't a sitter. He was stretching and the goalkeeper did well to close him down and stay on his feet.RalphCoatesComb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 2:12 pmLike a number of our strikers, he's trying too hard. It certainly wasn't a sitter but the through ball was a peach and just what our strikers need.Gordaleman wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 2:43 pmTo be fair, yesterday's chance wasn't a sitter. He was stretching and the goalkeeper did well to close him down and stay on his feet.

Re: Vydra
I’m amazed he gets away with wearing gloves.
Since the arrival of SD, I don’t recall another player wearing gloves in a game.
Edit: protection from smart arses mentioning keepers.

Lennon and Stanislaus are the 2 that spring to mind that also have worn them previously.Burnleyareback2 wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 10:41 pmI’m amazed he gets away with wearing gloves.

Re: Vydra
That through ball was a delight. Just shows what we can do when we attack as a unit and get players up the pitch.RalphCoatesComb wrote: ↑Sun Feb 07, 2021 2:54 pmIt certainly wasn't a sitter but the through ball was a peach and just what our strikers need.
From what I recall, Vydra should have let it come on to his left and sneak it in the near post or hit it quick and hard with his right. Did neither, unfortunately. Just need to toe bung those, doesn't matter how they go in.

Re: Vydra
I think the goals will come. He has to be a goal threat at some point given enough game time because you don’t finish top scorer in the Championship if you don’t carry that threat. If the lad had had the game time that Barnes has had I think we would be looking at a top player. Incidentally Barnes looked so much better today playing alongside him. Maybe Vydra is the key to unlocking our goal drought in one way or another.BabylonClaret wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 4:54 pmPlayed well today. Some good tou hes and runs b if Wood had been offside as many times he'd get peltees on here.
Its a shame he is no real goal threat but creates space for othees
Re: Vydra
Imagine if we have bought Vydra in the recent January transfer window. Dyche would have been hailed as a transfer genius.
‘Intelligent movement and great control’
‘A perfect foil for Barnes or Wood’
‘Enables us to play creative and entertaining football’
etc etc
Just a thought...

He might score on Saturday. Exciting times.
Re: Vydra
Well I guess in the law of averages if you persist with him giving him chance after chance eventually he will score

Re: Vydra
I feel a bit for Vydra, he does give his all. His running in behind is intelligent and he always looks to be positive. But unfortunately an awful lot doesn’t come off, he’s a nearly man. His movement and anticipation to get into genuine goal scoring positions is also pretty poor which is why I feel he doesn’t get on the scoresheet.
He’s deserving of the game time he’s getting at the moment but I suspect that those claiming that he’ll be prolific given a run in the time will be proven wrong.
