Should be queuing up to bat at number 3 in the sub continent. Best time to bat
Re: England vs India - Test Series
Lawrence is going to bat at 3 apparently.Red Fox Rocks Socks wrote: ↑Thu Feb 04, 2021 10:42 amWonder who’ll bat 3 then? Can’t see Root moving. Assume pope will come in but don’t think he’ll bat there which leaves Stokes or Lawrence....unless Moeen plays and they shoehorn him in the top 3 again

Wow! a baptism of fire for the new boy that, especially given the quality of India's attack.
Crawley looked out of nick in SL anyway, so it might not be as big a miss as you might expect.
And you can hardly ask the skipper to move from 4, when he's just amassed 2 huge scores in the preceding 2 tests.

England win the toss & bat first

A great day for England so far.
Great partnership for the openers and Sibley making his half century.
Slow and steady scoring, it's about grinding the opposition down in India and hoping the pitch spins when your opponents bat.

A great achievement by Root, owes it to his family upbringing. I saw his 1st century at Scarborough when he was nobbut a lad.

Class from Root and Sibley. It's good to see Joe 40 of the last 12 months has been replaced by Joe Consistent tonnes, showing his real class.
Hopefully the rest of the order can build on this very good start tomorrow, and put England in a strong position to get this test series off to a brilliant start.

Great day for England.
Shame for Sibley getting out in the last over but a brilliant innings from him batting the full day. He has protected the other batsman and made sure the 4th and 5th bowlers have had to bowl their fair share. Which we have scored well off.

When I was a lad my Gran used to make Yorkshire pudding on a big tray and we would add syrup.
Must have been a Yorkshire thing as her family were from Bradford and moved to Nelson in the 19th century to get away from the Irish migrants

Re: England vs India - Test Series
Pity about that late wicket, but that's why England pick Sibley, he'll simply bat the day and occupy the crease, and that's what a true opener does in India, Burns got a start, and then played a daft shot, and Lawrence failed as I though he might in these conditions, but that Sibley/Root partnership has given England a platform to go big, I like that Root is saying England need 600/700, he's right it's been a good 1st day, but there's along way to go, England scored nearly 500 here last time 1st innings, and still lost by an innings, so the message has to be bat the whole day tomorrow, and grind the Indian bowlers into the dust.
Another class knock from Joe, and he's finally showing why he should be considered one of the top bracket in test cricket, now he'll know he needs to capitalise tomorrow, and post a double hundred or more, if he can do that England will be in prime position to apply pressure, and possibly push for victory on days 4 & 5, you'd expect the pitch to worsen as the match progresses, and the spinners should come into the game later on.

Re: England vs India - Test Series
Terrific from J Root, great concentration and skill application- he's in great form at the moment and proved that in Sri L and now India. Sibley did very well too, that made a very effective partnership.
Hopefully Root can continue a while and inspire one or two others to come to the party, we need a few more hundred runs yet.
(Remembering the Chennai test from late 2016 when Eng batted first and got 477- followed by India getting 759-7 declared and winning by an innings+ when we only got 207 second time round).

Re: England vs India - Test Series
I'm sure Joe Root has memories of 2016 as well, hence why he'll be looking to amass a huge 1st innings total, he won't want lightening striking twice.LeadBelly wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 1:12 pmTerrific from J Root, great concentration and skill application- he's in great form at the moment and proved that in Sri L and now India. And if England bat well tomorrow there's no reason why they can't get 500-550 minimum, the pitch is a road, and although the Indian bowlers have toiled away. it's been hard work for them, and they've struggled to exert any pressure on the batsman, and yes you're 100% correct LB, the rest need to follow Root's lead, they can't expect him to score all the runs, Sibley showed that with patience and discipline you can make a score on here, and Stokes, Pope & Jos should fancy a bat on this surface, any half decent test player should back themselves to score runs on this.
Re: England vs India - Test Series
Anyone know if the highlights are being shown on tv?

Yes I have looked at the tv guide in my paper and also on my television, as I couldn't see the highlights mentioned at all, possibly as the deal for tv rights has only recently been agreed, I thought I would see if anyone on here could help.
Hope that answers your question. If only all of us could be as quick witted as yourself!

I had to set the alarm early to watch.
We could be watching greatness.
290-3 Root 138no
Stokes 17no
Stokes has got a start as well. Good sign for England.

Set to be a fantastic series, shows how important the toss is to win, if we are coming in chasing 5/600 as the pitch is starting to change we could easily lose by an innings

Can't understand why Nick Knight kept stating that Ben Stokes was under pressure. Stokes looked to be batting in a pretty normal Ben Stokes way to me, and he removed bowlers from the attack.
Really good so far from England, hopefully still batting at the end of the day.

Re: England vs India - Test Series
India's 4th and 5th bowlers (both spinners) are going at over 4 an over. A massive drop in standard to the front 3 bowlers so far. It might change if they get the chance to bowl on the last couple of days though.
The worry is the same with Englands spinners not keeping control. It would have been nice to have both Anderson and Broad for tight spells. 5 overs for 5 runs type.

454-4 at tea. Joe Root imperious. It’s brilliant to see him back in this form..... back in the big league. Would be great for him to still be there at the end of the day.
