I'd rather see India 20-3 at the end of the day.

Brilliant again from Root.

Needs to sort his conversion rate from 200 to 250 though.

Buttler gone for 30. Leaving one that nipped back on him. Always looks awful.

525-7

Archer gone 1st ball

A good day for England 555-8 at the close exactly what the doctor ordered, if you win the toss in India, you bat once and you bat big, and that's exactly what England have done this last 2 days, a perfect demonstration of how to bat in the 1st innings of a test on a good pitch, the other encouraging sign is the pitch is showing signs of wear, so get some quick runs in the morning, and then hope for a few quick wickets, India can't win from here, so they'll be under pressure with the bat when their turn finally comes.

Fantastic effort from Root, he converted his overnight ton to a double, and great support from Stokes again, this lad is incredible, no matter what the situation he allows delivers, shame he couldn't get his ton, but he looks in fine nick, which will be important for the rest of the series.

If I was a batting man I'd still make the draw favourite, but England have given themselves a chance of pushing for victory on days 4 & 5.

Didn't England lose by an innings on their last tour of India after posting a total somewhere around 460 when batting first?

I think its just a little early to say that India cant win from here.

Or maybe my memory is playing tricks with me?

England did, but given we're already 2 days into this test, and England have 550+ on the board, and are still batting in their 1st innings, then I really can't see how India can rack up the required runs plus bowl England out in the time remaining, this is why England should amass as large a 1st innings total as possible, to eliminate any prospect of an Indian victory, and the pitch isn't getting any easier to bat on, so it's not impossible that India will struggle in their reply, yes they have a strong batting line-up, but scoreboard pressure can do strange things, and a couple of early wickets for England, and the complexion of the game could quickly change, look how quickly England lost 4 wickets in the evening session, and one session like that for England, and they'll be well in control of this test, I still suspect it'll fade out to a high-scoring draw ultimately however.

England all out for 578

India started off like a house on fire but Archer has just struck. Getting Sharma to knick off behind.

44-2 The dangerous Gill has gone to a decent catch by Jimmy at mid on.

He got 29 off only 27 balls.

Archer has bowled dangerously.

England have got a bit of control of the run rate now. Last 10 overs gone for 10/15 whereas the first 10 overs went for 50.

Pujara and Kohli far more watchful, setting themselves up for the long haul.

70-2

Is Stokes not fully fit? Seems strange that he's only bowled three overs, especially as he's the kind of player that makes something happen.

Maybe, he has bowled better than Leach but the pair of them bowl to many full tosses or long hops. Bess just has a habit of picking up wickets with them.

As Mark Butcher said in commentary.

It's better to be lucky than good.

Pants was a perfect off spinners dismissal to be fair but it was tripe leading up to it.

Bess is improving match by match and get some luck like the catch which was deflected bu Ollie Pope
Leach has been Hammered by Pant but without any luck as three sixes only just cleared the boundary over a fielders leap for a catch.

Another decent day for England, Jofra bowled well with the new ball, and Bess took some vital wickets, but it's important England wrap this innings up as soon as possible in the morning, and give themselves enough time to set up a large total and bowl India out for a 2nd time.

The big question is do you enforce the follow on. or do you bat for a couple of sessions first, these will be tough calls for Root, remember England had a chance to push for victory in the 1st test in 2016, and ultimately run out of time with India 6 down on the final day, so Joe won't want history to repeat itself.

A thrilling run chase by the WI in Chittagong, Debutant Kyle Mayers smashed an unbeaten double hundred as they chased down nearly 400, to win in the closing minutes.

Our spinners are the worst I’ve seen in an Enlgand team for a long time. We may win this first test but I cant see us winning the series after watching these two.

Fantastic effort from Mayers and W Indies generally. He came it at 59-3 with his team needing 395 to win. There he still was 336 runs later having scored 210 himself.

That's the 5th highest winning run chase ever in a test match. He may well have a long career ahead of him but that feat will be difficult to surpass.

England are 119-5 with a lead of 360.

Scoring at 5 an over to set a big enough total to stop them being able to win with enough overs left to bowl them out.

Hopefully 6 or 7 overs of Buttler can see us over 400 and get after them soon as.

The pitch is offering assistance but it's still a dangerous batting line up in their home conditions.

With a lead of almost 400, 20 runs or so from the last 10 overs makes little sense.

If they aren't ready to declare then have a slog for half n hour. Hopefully they don't end up with India 8 down at the end tomorrow.

Very strange tactics at the moment.

Have to trust Root and Silverwood as they know a lot more about cricket than me but it just seems to be reducing our chance of winning as every minute passes.

Lots of big chases in world cricket currently. I'd see this as being every minute takes us further away from losing.

I was in Chennai the last time we played a test there, we scored 477 and lost by an innings +. All different this time, but it does show the freaky games seen there.

Surely we should be playing to win first but make sure we draw if we can't win. This seems more like ensuring the draw and hoping we can sneak a win. Very negative.

We won't dominate in India like this very often so can't afford to not take advantage.

I'd hope Jimmy is saying "let me bowl at the *******" to Root.

Well done Jimmy.

Just gave his wicket away so he have a bowl.

The worst tactics I've ever seen from a cricket captain. Pathetic from Root, and all on free to air tv.

I haven't got up at 4am a few days running to watch Bess padding away when he should be setting up a win.
