Looks like India have shifted into "one day" mode 13 from that last over...

On saying that Leach has a wicket 👍😁👍

Jimmy’s effort wasted, should have got the new ball

It was a very strange session.

When England took the field they were very flat, like they weren't behind the captains bizarre decision to bat on and on.
Then he doesn't open with Jimmy, who only has a few overs help from the ball.

Hopefully the Leach wicket and a chat in the dressing rooms can get them all together and firing.

Come on England.

Yes.
It was all very odd at the end of play.
Not much of it seemed to make sense.

Are they saving Jimmy for when the ball begins to swing ?

India's spinners were more effective with the new ball, with it adding extra bounce when kicking from the rough, whereas the seamers seemed more effective with the older ball. Maybe that's why they did it.

Loads of criticisim on social media (for a change) and whilst England maybe got a bit lost in the afternoon session, some of the stuff is way over the top, led, as ever, by the king of p*** poor hot takes.... Michael Vaughan. I've seen a number of people say that Root's captaincy is Attrocious..... a captain close to being England's joint winningmost captain, in 6 less tests than Vaughan, and currently attempting to win a 5th (I think) consecutive away series.

See what tomorrow brings, and whether the approach has resulted in the win. It's interesting, as before this game, plenty were saying that England wouldn't take more than 6 or 7 wickets when India bat, but here we are, with apparently not enough time left to get 10...... how times change..... in a matter of days.

Michael Vaughan has got so far up his own 'arriss, it's past time bad light stopped his crap-gushing.
Got to the stage a while back now, I'd rather listen to Boycott than him.

I've thought for a while now that Vaughan is trying to create a "new Boycott" character for himself.

90 overs to take 9 wickets. Set up for an enthralling day.

India will back themselves to bat all day on home soil, particularly against our spinners.

Their 9, 10, Jack being fairly useless will help our cause though.

Peculiar day from England, and that wasted time might prove crucial tomorrow, India have shown in Australia that batting out day 5 for a draw, or even completing a large run chase isn't beyond them.

Why didn't Root enforce the follow on?, surely that would have been England's best chance of forcing a result in the time remaining, now India have a far greater chance of at least securing a draw, the one big plus for England is the pitch is playing tricks, and this might be the slight edge that they need to complete this win, however even with that help both spinners will need to come to the party tomorrow.

This bears a scary resemblance to the 1st test last time in India, England controlled the game, but batted on too long 2nd innings, and ultimately run out of time with India 6/7 down. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself tomorrow, because England may not get a better chance of victory the rest of the series.

Root lost all momentum for the team by batting on with the bowlers. It was them who left the field with confidence. Ashwin got his 5fer for instance.

He is obviously scared that his spinners will go for more than 5 an over for long periods. They probably will to be fair as the Indian batting have no respect for them. We just need them to get wickets at regular intervals.

I'm guessing that Root/England management believe that the pitch will deteriorate further as day5 proceeds and hence no follow on which couldve meant England batting late on to win/lose on a bad pitch. Fingers crossed the turn /bounce get more variable as Tuesday wears on and we're able to apply the necessary pressure. Doubt Ill be up at 04.00 but 06.40 is probable.

Follow ons have gone from cricket.

It would take a really low score and effort from bowlers to enforce one.

Yes I also assume that's the thinking, well if that is the case, then it's down to the spinners to deliver, and really they should have no excuses, it's a day 5 pitch, England have just been bundled out for 178, and they have a big total to play with, so if they can't bowl India out tomorrow then serious questions will need to be asked.

I missed Leach getting the vital wicket of Pujara eaely this morning but then Jimmy comes on and second ball bowls Gill, who looked well set on 50. Bit of reverse swing straight away.

Now a review for LBW 3rd ball very close n.o on umpires call.
Rahane bowled next bowl though.

Jimmy on fire

Ashwin has taken a few blows to the hands off Archer while Kohli stays at the other end facing full tosses and long hops at the other from Bess.

Ashwin now hit on the helmet.

Such a shame we haven’t a decent spinner in this series because I honestly think we could have won this series. Lose the toss and we’ve not chance

Brilliant bowling from Leach this innings. His deliveries to get Rohit and Pujara were both beauties. Could well finish with a 5 fer.

Not quite alone, I think Root played it fine, and said so yesterday. Great win, having seen us score almost 500 last time there and lose this makes up for that somewhat. Pity I couldn’t be there again, Chennai is a great city if you get the chance to go ever. Another test there so could give us the edge having won one already before all of to Ahmedabad.

Spot on with the captaincy angle.
A lot of credit to Joe.
I've had my own digs at him for it a few times in the past.
But he's grown into it recently and, his batting has also come into his own.
Superb to see.

Outstanding cricket all round from England. That over from the GOAT was just sublime, even by his own standards. Superb to see and we go again in three days.

Clearly the toss is big regardless in India so let’s see.

Part of me wants Jimmy playing in the next test, but I also think Broad will be firing in these conditions and I don’t want Jimmy picking up an injury before the Ashes with playing too much on roads.

Anybody ever seen anything like the “dead ball” wicket before?
Looked like the bail came off from the sound wave after Archers delivery hit the bat. Odd how the stump was leaning backwards though. Possibly from the batter stepping back and soft ground. Either way it’s the strangest thing I’ve seen at cricket.

Almost the perfect Test match.

Winning the toss
Opening partnership of 60
Opener batting all day
Root carrying on his great form
Stokes great knock at a decent lick
Spinners picking up wickets
Archer being dangerous on slow pitches
Anderson putting in match changing spells

Only negatives were the amount of bad balls the spinners through down and the bizarre non declaration. But we won easy despite all that.

Buttler goes home and Foakes comes in to keep.
Broad likely to come in. Do we rest Anderson or replace Bess? Bess did alright with the bat and a few wickets so it's a tough call.
Will Archer be rested with such a short turn around?
Woakes could come in?

It's a hard side to get into.

Another point to consider is that the 3rd test is a day/night game played with a pink ball. Jimmy will make it talk! With that in mind the selectors may decide to rest him and play Broad in the next test. Let's face it, Stuart isn't too shabby a bowler.

I thought the decision to alternate Sir Jimmy and Broad had already been announced, due to the amount of cricket to come and their ages?

Broad would also be pretty handy with the pink ball - I'd like see them play together in that one. That may mean picking neither for the next game unless they are confident Broad can play two on the spin.

The problem is that if India bat first, they could bat for two days like we did and with average spinners, that could mean a lot of bowling for the seamers.

It was class wasn't it? Great to see Root making many eat their words about his captaincy. A clear plan, a clear focus, with the batting on aiming to remove distractions and drive that focus on the goal.

Class all round....... I keep saying it, but we're very fortunate to be on this planet at the time when England truly have 3 of the all time greats playing for them.

Credit to Chris Silverwood as well. Got them playing proper test cricket after taking over from Trevor Bayliss, who i thought gave the impression he wasn't particularly bothered about the Test side.

Re the failure to declare, Alistair Cook gave a reasonable explanation.

It wasn't a question of runs, it was a question of time. Joe Root wanted India to bat for about an hour at the end of day four, so that his bowlers could go flat out during that hour, and still have a hard ball to bowl with the next morning.

He was lucky we got bowled out without any injuries to the bowlers.

You can say it didn't matter in the end as we won easy but I can't see him doing it again after the backlash.

Hopefully it just gets put behind us and the win is talked about.

It’s not really lucky that bowlers don’t get injured when batting, it’s normal. It’s unlucky when they get injured. They had their plan, they stuck to it, it worked. They will do the same again. They’re impervious to outside criticism this group..... have been for a long while.
