If I was Long I'd prefer to be playing I feel. Still, well done to the lad on earning another spell.

I'm surprised, but fairly pleased, as long as they're not too expensive, which I doubt.

I'm glad we've extended them, I'm surprised Kev Long decided to sign up again. At his age I'd thought he'd have dropped to play regular championship footy.

Re: 4 contract extensions
I wouldn’t have been giving JBG two years considering the last two seasons and the fact he’s now in his 30’s - but that’s just me.
Lowton getting two years signifies the end of Bardsley’s time I reckon, and the likes of Kenny coming in to compete.
Glad Pieters is confirmed to stay, and personally happy Long is staying. He’s backup, no more no less, and I assume he’s on a relative pittance and doesn’t kick up a stink that he doesn’t play.

JBG must be in shock.. the Glassman gets a new contract
Re: 4 contract extensions
Sadly we have very little choice when it comes to retaining the players we've got, because we simply cannot recruit.

OK, so he’s picked up a good wage, he may well be very happy at Burnley and be a big part of the group - ultimately though, it’s a very short career and he’s not done too much other than be an OK, occasional backup.
Each to their own, I just hope he doesn’t end up wishing he’d done things differently.
Re: 4 contract extensions
JBG has only just turned 30.31 in october
Re: 4 contract extensions
That’s three areas that many see as key positions for improvement in. Those extensions don’t suggest imminent reinforcements for at least two positions!

Re: 4 contract extensions
Don’t agree with this. Bardsley is expected to leave and a replacement will be brought in to challenge Lowton. Long is currently our 3rd choice centre back and with Tarky likely to leave it would be crazy to lose him. Pieters is decent enough back up to Taylor, and we are a winger short on JBG’s side anyway.

Re: 4 contract extensions
From my non-expert perspective Kevin Long has been a loyal and vital member of our squad and should be appreciated for his service to the club. When he’s been called upon he’s stepped up to the plate and performed very reliably.
If there was a thread titled “unsung heroes” he’d be top of the list.
That’s my opinion.

Re: 4 contract extensions
I’m ok with this, as long as we are still going to be looking to develop the starting 11. They all provide solid options for a club with our finances especially as back ups. They are trusted by the manager, know what we are about, fit into to squad as characters and are happy to be at Burnley, replacing them would cost a fortune and how many players will come to us as squad players.
Like others I’m sure, when long plays I expect him to give a goal or golden chance away every game and I do not want to see him as a first team regular because of that. I’m not surprised he hasn’t moved on though because I think he will back himself (even if we don’t ) to take the spot / chance when Tarks leaves.

Fair point - I’d assumed Brady to remain on the right and that Bardsley (better option the Lowton for me) would get an extra year.LongsideClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 4:23 pmDon’t agree with this. We're not really interested in having too much youth in the squad (one or two youngsters is plenty). And even if we were, we'd not be able to recruit it anyway.SkiptonClaret wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 4:34 pmDad’s Army. We desperately need to add some youth to the squad.
Best that we stick with Kev, Lowts, and Big Erik.
Re: 4 contract extensions
As long as we see Lowton and JBG as being squad players/backup i don't really have a problem with them getting new deals.
If we aren't looking to improve on them this summer then you have to question what the point of the takeover was.

Re: 4 contract extensions
The problem, if it is a problem, is that we already have players who are good enough to finish in the top half in a good year and fairly comfortably away from relegation in a bad year. It's so easy to say we must sign better players - but to finish above top half, we're looking at competing in the same markets as Leicester, Everton, Wolves, perhaps Aston Villa, and we can't expect to sign any players that they want to sign. We need to find the good players that other clubs don't realise how good they are - not easy.

Good news we are not going to have the same fiasco as last summer. We can’t just get rid of them all in the summer still need these type of players as part of our squad.

Understandable keeping Lowton, think we’ll be after new right back in the summer when Bardsley leaves. Pieters has another year as back up in him, pleased that JBG has another couple of yrs, lets hope he can stay fit! Happy to have long as one of our backup centre halves.

Why is it sad? I’m curious. I’m sure it’s not sad for Kevin Long, and I’m sure he has a fantastic life. And Burnley are lucky to have such a competent backup member of the squad who is happy to only play a few games a season.

Or develop younger players and make them better like mcneil. We could do that with players like Jason Knight from Derby also.dsr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 5:01 pmThe problem, if it is a problem, is that we already have players who are good enough to finish in the top half in a good year and fairly comfortably away from relegation in a bad year. And when he checks his bank balance and thinks about the couple of £million that's going to be added in the next two years I'm sure he will break down in tearsDCWat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 4:15 pmHe will surely look back on his career, at some point in the future, and have some regrets.

Also worth noting that the manager will have been pushing for these extensions and it is a clear sign of backing the manager from Alan Pace.
4th choice centre halves are difficult to find. No problem with having Kevin Long stay for longer for this reason.

Yes he'll be very well off, i just think a professional footballer should want to play football and have some drive to better themselves.

Re: 4 contract extensions
Really unfair. How many times has he let us down when called into action. I think there are lots of teams that would welcome anyone with Kev Longs attitude. To put the groundwork in week in, week out, knowing you probably won't play. Just so that when the call does come he is ready. He does it all with a smile on his face, you never hear of him causing trouble, or spitting his dummy. I'm sure he is one of those players appreciated far more by his team mates than the fans, simply because they get to see that attitude day in, day out, and it keeps the rest of them on their toes.
Well done Kev, I for one, am glad you'll be around for another couple of years at least.

It's like the over 30's club
Re: 4 contract extensions
When you count the number of contract extensions over the past few seasons and compare it with the number of players who wouldn't sign a new contract when offered (Jeff Hendrick was the only one that I remember), then "fiasco" is far too strong a word. BFC have a teriffic record of re-signing the players we want to keep.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Sat Jan 30, 2021 5:04 pmGood news we are not going to have the same fiasco as last summer. Even if you throw in the departures of Lennon and Hart, "fiasco" remains too strong a word.
Re: 4 contract extensions
Put it this way
Would you rather play a handful of games for BFC each season but then be able to retire at around 35 on a pension that you or I could only dream of
Or would you rather work for an extra 30 years
Long could have quite easily gone down to League one, even Championship and played every week but his financial future will now be secured for the rest of his life
Good luck to him

I heard 3 years ago what he was on. Not an outrage amount but far more than he would get at a lower level. I, for one, am happy to have him as cover. He has far more good games than poor ones even if he does have a mistake in him.
