Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
Are there any 'celebrities' that haven't made a programme about their trip around Britain?
I know this lockdown hasn't been kind to the programme makers, but FFS, how many more of these are we going to be subjected to?

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
Remember when television was good, and you’ll get experts presenting programmes with authority and a keen insight.
Now they seem to just have a theme for a show, say ‘steam trains’ and then cast an almost forgotten celebrity who will come across a bit ‘fish out of water’, but can follow a script while chucking in a few ad-libs of their own... but who everyone likes - such as Jasper Carrott
And seems perfectly reasonable to broadcast that as a series. Even better if they get his daughter, Lucy Davies involved too. Then they’re even more like us, a lovely bit of family bonding while learning along the way.
I wonder what sort of intesting characters, shops and obscure village traditions they will experience together?
Got BAFTA written all over it.

I don’t watch these kind of programmes because they’re generally pants. But I’m guessing these people had agreed contracts to shoot travel documentaries, so have just had to make domestic alternatives.

Any decent contract would have a force majeure clause with a pandemic relevant to this. Anyhow totally unimportant and uninteresting

Guess it makes up for the c. £50m of public money wasted on the Garden Bridge project she loudly championed.
Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
Seriously you could do a fascinating programme every day forever around the UK. There are at a minimum 50 or more places within (and a few in Burnley centre) that have unique social and economic history worth exploring. Every county, town, village, river, hill, forest has a story.

Due to the huge influx of Nepalese civilians into the town I don’t think many locals would welcome her with open arms.

Why not? I have personally spent a lot of time with Nepalese people, having been priveledged enough to have served with a Gurkha rifle company, and I can assure anyone reading they are a wonderfully generous and honourable people.
I’d be more happy living amongst the Nepalese than any of the locals in Aldershot if there’s any truth in what you say.

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
You could quite simply, not watch it.
Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
You want to go on a train journey without celebs, try this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK-M3Ra0DVM
There's loads of vids like this, not just freight, not just in the UK but Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Israel and other locations.
Freight trains, like this one, go off the beaten track. Passenger trains show the more well known routes.
Many of these are pretty good quality so if you can connect youtube to your TV (USB from your router perhaps) you can watch there.
There are also 'in cockpit' videos. Here's a landing at Schipol:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g0xL88ebXs
Youtube has lots of good stuff if you can't find what you want on normal TV. Here for example is a programme about the irrepresable Barry Fry at Peterborough:

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
Aldershot has been struggling for years after the large withdrawal of the forces from the area. The high street is desolate with all the lost trade from the squaddies and now there are large volumes of unemployed families of Ghurkas wandering around the towns shops and parks during the day and this has upset the locals. It is sad to see. I don’t think it is quite what JL sought from her campaign

I know what the OP means, there is a small Scottish lady doing the rounds in a camper van as well, we have had numerous food trips via the abundance of celebrity chefs FFS how often can you wax lyrical over a local delicacy based on turnips and lamb? we have had celebs in caravans, barges, camper Van's etc doing these road trips. When will it end,how will it end wake up with 4th rate celeb Brian as he cooks your breakfast and washes up.

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
Have you anything specific in mind?
In my experience, no worse than you would expect here. In my experience that is, living in and around them for 3 years. Presumably you have had a different experience hence the question? I’d be very interested in hearing your personal experiences with them, because I’d be very surprised to hear these people treat women any worse than the examples we can read in our local paper. I personally didn’t witness or hear of anything untoward.

It depends what these celebrities etc actually produce on their trips around. I woudn't say Simon Reeve is a celebrity and his programmes aren't about nice hotels and tourist hot spots and scenic railway journeys but are really interesting - for me. Paul Merton on the ScittishHighlands and Lochs was interesting. Some are some are not.
Most recently two weeks of celebrity chef Rick Stein on the subject of Cornwall - and he never once mentioned Poldark. He wrung every ounce out of it. Too much.
With overseas travel out, programmes about places and holidays in UK are more prevalent. But the prices of some are ridiculously high.

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
I think having their women walk behind them in street is pretty degrading, which I’ve witnessed in Aldershot ,also being rude to my sister-in-law on a constant basis hasn’t helped my view either .bobinho wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 11:56 amHave you anything specific in mind?

Re: Now it's Joanna Lumleys turn.
That’s disappointing to hear, and certainly not been Anything I have ever witnessed.
Whilst I don’t want to belittle any of the negative experiences you and your sister in law have endured, I’d suggest (and hope) these instances are very much minor in comparison to what some communities have experienced. I’m also not suggesting they should be tolerated but there are far far worse things happening on our doorsteps than what you have personally witnessed. I’m probably not allowed to say what these things are despite them being proven in the law courts.
Having females walk behind the males is very much a cultural thing for certain countries. I personally and not entirely enamoured with men and women having separate entrances for worshipping in a Mosque, but it’s cultural so let it be I say. Orthodox Jewish women can’t work, that I find not to my taste but that is their culture so let it be I say.

And when eventually lock down ends and travelling abroad is back on the menu, the "celebs" (and their totally unknown relatives) will be queuing up to pitch their ideas for a "Trek across the Rockies with my Grandad" or "Exploring Forgotten Tasmania with My Mum" or "Cricket Grounds of the World with my 3 Sons" and we'll be footing the bill (again) for their amazing all expenses paid holiday (with a salary!!) Good work if you can mug your way into though!!
